The European Hansemuseum is a museum in Lübeck, Germany dedicated to the history of the Hanseatic League. Covering an area of in total 7,405 square metres, is the largest museum in the world specifically dedicated to this subject. The museum was opened in May 2015.
Planning for a museum in Lübeck dedicated to the history of the Hanseatic League began in 2004. The opening of the museum was delayed several times because archaeological excavations on the site proved more time-consuming than initially imagined. The museum was officially opened by the Chancellor of Germany Angela Merkel on 27 May 2015, and received its first visitors on 30 May 2015.
The museum consists of a permanent exhibition with exhibits of original historical objects, interactive elements and staged historical scenes from the former trading ports of the Hansa Novgorod, Bruges, Bergen and London, as well as Lübeck. The original historical items displayed include documents, paintings and gold and silver coins from the so-called Lübeck Hoard. The exhibition is aimed at informing visitors about the overall history of the Hanseatic League from its formation to its dissolution, but also about the economics and trade networks of the League as well as of everyday life in the historical time span during which the Hansa existed. It is the largest museum in the world dedicated to the history of the Hanseatic League.
The museum is located in the northern part of the old town of the city and lies in the part of the city that is considered a World Heritage Site (Hanseatic City of Lübeck). The museum is part of the Burgkloster or Castle Friary site, a former Dominican monastery from the 13th century, and it's also to a degree integrated with the Castle Hill nearby. The location has been described as one of the most important medieval monuments in northern Germany. Visitors to the museum can also access the Burgkloster and the archaeological site on which the museum was built, thus providing an insight into the development of the urban and social structure of Lübeck in parallel to the museum's exhibition chronicling the history of the Hansa.

Lübeck is a northern German city distinguished by Brick Gothic architecture, which dates to its time as the medieval capital of the Hanseatic League, a powerful trading confederation. Its symbol is the Holstentor, a red-brick city gate that defended the river-bounded Altstadt (old town). Rebuilt following WW II, the Marienkirche is a 13th–14th-century landmark that widely influenced Northern European church design.
A 12th-century gem boasting more than a thousand historical buildings, Lübeck’s picture-book appearance is an enduring reminder of its role as one of the founding cities of the mighty Hanseatic League and its moniker ‘Queen of the Hanse’. Behind its landmark Holstentor, you’ll find streets lined with medieval merchants’ homes and spired churches forming Lübeck’s ‘crown’.
Recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site in 1987, today this thriving provincial city retains many enchanting corners to explore, including a fab musuem that tells the Lübeck story.
The Hanseatic City of Lübeck (Hansestadt Lübeck) is the largest German port on the Baltic Sea and the second-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein, situated at the mouth of the river Trave (hence the name of its port suburb Travemünde). The city has been an important port since the 12th century and, together with nearby Hamburg, has founded what became the powerful Hanseatic League of ports and trading towns. Unlike fellow Hanseatic Cities of Hamburg and Bremen, it has lost its Free (Freie Stadt) status and has been incorporated into the surrounding federal land, but history also has a sweeter side for Lübeck - it is globally known for the finest marzipan.
The old town (Altstadt) of Lübeck , although considerably damaged during the Second World War, survived from medieval times in a pretty much unchanged or truthfully rebuilt form. It is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The city centre's medieval skyline, mainly composed of seven Gothic-style church towers, is still intact. Lübeck is surrounded by parts of the old city walls with two of the original four city gates left. Most notable is the Holsten Gate (Holstentor) which was the motif on the German banknote of 50 Deutsche Mark prior to reunification, when the bills were redesigned.
Besides being the second largest city of Schleswig-Holstein, it is the only city in the north of Germany that still has an extensive medieval old city (Altstadt) comparable to some of southern Germany. Though considerably hit by bombs in WW2 , most of the old city survived from medieval times or was reconstructed. It has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The city centre still has its medieval skyline mainly composed of seven gothic-style church towers. It is surrounded by parts of the old city walls with two of originally four city gates left intact. Most notable is the Holsten Gate (Holstentor) which was the motif on the German banknote of 50 Marks until a redesign following German reunification in 1990.
Lübeck was historically an independent city state and came to considerable wealth as the capital of the Hanseatic League from the 11th to the 17th century. Many merchants made a fortune on shipping salt to other Baltic port cities in exchange for valuable goods needed in Germany. Many impressive warehouses are located at the old harbour and can be accessed by tourists as they host museums, shops, restaurants or pubs today.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Jakarta on Tuesday, at the start of her first official visit to Indonesia.
Merkel touched down at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in a plane displaying both the Indonesian and German flags, where she was greeted by a welcome delegation.
Later on Tuesday, Merkel is scheduled to meet President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at the Presidential Palace in the capital.
Both leaders will discuss efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
On a visit that will last for two days, Merkel is also scheduled to visit the National Heroes Cemetery, Immanuel Church, Istiqlal Mosque and the Office of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics.

En el año 2015 se inauguró en Lübeck el Museo Europeo de la Hansa que es el protagonista de este vídeo. Cabe recordar que Lübeck fue la capital de la Liga de la Hansa, una federación comercial en el que se aliaron en el siglo XIV alrededor de 200 poblaciones desde los Países Bajos hasta el norte del Báltico. En este museo se hace un repaso de la historia de lo que significó la unión comercial más importante que ha existido en Europa. Además también se puede visitar el monasterio castillo dominico de María Madakena, considerado como uno de los monasterios medievales más importantes de Alemania.

Rolf Hammel-Kiesow studierte Geschichte, Germanistik und Politische Wissenschaft an der Universität Heidelberg und promovierte bei Hermann Jakobs. Von 1978 bis 1984 war er im Amt für Vor- und Frühgeschichte der Hansestadt Lübeck, danach im Amt für Denkmalpflege tätig. Seit 1993 ist er Leiter der Forschungsstelle für die Geschichte der Hanse und des Ostseeraums in Lübeck und ist zugleich stellvertretender Leiter des Archivs der Hansestadt Lübeck mit dem Schwerpunkt „Geschichte der Hanse und des Ostseeraums“. Hammel-Kiesow hat einen Lehrauftrag am Historischen Seminar der Universität Kiel. Seit März 2008 lehrt er als Honorarprofessor an der Universität Kiel. Seit Mai 2010 ist er Vorsitzender des Hansischen Geschichtsvereins. Er leitete die Erstellung der wissenschaftlichen Konzeption für das Europäische Hansemuseum.
