다음날 새벽부터 룩셈부르크 남쪽, 레미쉬 지역으로 향했다. 모젤강에서 일출을 보기 위해서다. 태양과 하늘과 구름 이 모든 것들이 유리처럼 반사되어 황홀한 풍경을 만들어낸다. 백조 가족도 아침 운동을 하러 나왔는지 기지개를 켠다. “아침에 자전거 타는 거 좋아해요. 아침 햇살이 멋지잖아요. 그래서 사진도 찍었고요. 즐거운 하루 보내세요.” 모젤강은 화이트 와인을 만드는 포도 산지로 유명하다. 포도 밭 길이만 무려 42킬로미터. 그 역사도 2000년에 달한다. 이 전통 깊은 와인을 한국에서 맛볼 수 없는 이유는 룩셈부르크가 모젤 와인을 너무나 사랑해서라나? 한국에 수출하기도 전에 다 먹어버린단다. 갓길 주차장 쪽에는 캠핑카들이 모여 있다. 아침 햇살을 받으며 커피를 마시는 중년 여성이 보인다. “우리는 스위스에서 캠핑카를 타고 왔어요.” 베아트리스의 캠핑카는 그다지 크지 않지만 자전거도 달려있고 2인이 여행하기에 안성맞춤이다. 그녀가 흔쾌히 차 안을 구경시켜 준다기에 들어가 봤다. “여기가 침실이에요. 위에는 수납장이 있고요.” 침실과 화장실 주방, 그리고 식탁까지. 작아도 있을 건 다 있다. “ 그리고 이분이 남편인가요?” “맞아요, 내 남편이에요.” 식탁의자를 돌리자 신기하게도 운전석이 된다. “전 운전 담당이에요.” “룩셈부르크에는 처음인데 모젤의 자연은 아름답네요.” 캠핑카 문을 열고 바라보는 모젤강의 풍경은 마치 액자 속에서 살아 움직이는 명화를 보는 것 같다. 레미쉬에서 10여 분 가량 더 남쪽으로 내려갔다. 바로 이곳이 국경 없는 유럽을 만들어낸 솅겐 조약이 이루어진 곳, 솅겐 지역이다. 위에서 보면 유럽을 상징하는 알파벳 E가 선명히 보이는데, 여행자가 솅겐을 오면 의례를 치르듯 제일 먼저 들르는 솅겐 조약 기념비이다. “ 이 기념비는 강철로 만들어졌습니다. 강철은 EU 출범 초기의 ‘유럽 석탄 철강 공동체’ 때문에 특히나 중요했습니다. 또한 대대로 룩셈부르크에서 철강 산업이 중요시되었기 때문이기도 하죠. 그리고 별 세 개는 조약에 서명한 세 국가를 상징합니다. 바로 벨기에, 테덜란드, 룩셈부르크로 이루어진 ‘베네룩스 3국’과 독일, 프랑스를 뜻합니다.” 지금의 유럽을 있게 만든 의미 있는 곳이기에 세계 각국의 여러 사람들이 견학을 온다. “네덜란드예요. 튤립과 나막신이 있습니다. 네덜란드 나막신이에요.” 유럽연합에 가입된 국가 수만큼 별을 만들고 그 위에 그 나라를 상징하는 조형물을 세워 놓았다. 의미도 있고 재미도 있다. “이 장소에 있는 것이 감격적입니다. 바로 여기서 솅겐 조약이 체결되었으니까요.“ 그런데 모젤강 한가운데 무슨 부표 같은 것이 보인다. 자세히 보니 유럽연합 깃발도 보인다. “ 저 깃발이 룩셈부르크, 독일, 프랑스의 국경이 만나는 곳이에요. 강 한가운데 세 국가의 국경이 있는 거죠.” 저 자그마한 부표 하나가 3국의 국경을 표시하는 용도라니. 아직 남북한 분단시대에 살고 있는 나에게는 무척 부러운 부표다. 솅겐에는 또한 솅겐 조약을 기념하는 조그마한 박물관이 있다. 내부에는 솅겐 조약 당시의 사진, 서명 서류, 그리고 그 당시 유람선 프린세스 마리 아스트리드호의 모형이 있는데, 바로 이 유람선에서 솅겐 조약이 이루어졌다고 한다. 하지만 내 눈길을 잡은 건 한 쪽 벽에 진열되어 있는 모자.솅겐 조약으로 인해 직장을 잃은 세관원들의 모자라고 한다. 가슴 아픈 사연일거라 생각했는데 그들에게 새로운 직장을 마련해 주고 잘 생활을 영위하는지 체크한단다. 인간의 행복을 무엇보다 중요시하는 유럽 특유의 섬세한 배려가 부럽다. 원래 가려던 솅겐 지역 근처의 포도밭으로 발길을 재촉했다. 포도가 익는 건 조금 먼 일일 듯하다. 모젤에서 가장 오래된 와이너리를 찾아가 보기로 했다. 그런데 건물이 아니라 돌 절벽이 나온다. 내부는 거대한 인공 동굴. 와인들이 숙성되고 있다. 숙성 공간으로 이곳을 택한 이유는 동굴이 와인 숙성에 최적의 온도, 12도를 일정하게 유지시켜 주기 때문이라고 한다. “ 왼편 스테인리스 탱크에서는 화이트 와인이 숙성되고 있는데요. 스테인리스 탱크는 와인의 신선도와 맛을 유지해줍니다. 그리고 반대편에는 오크통이 있는데요. 프랑스산과 룩셈부르크산 오크가 사용됩니다. 이 안에는 피노누아나 생로랑과 같은 레드 와인이 숙성되죠. 화이트 와인은 한 종류만 여기서 만들어지는데 바로 샤도네예요. 이 통에 저장하면 오크 향, 고소함, 바닐라 향이 가미됩니다.“ 병에 담긴 와인은 이스트를 넣어 가스가 위로 올라가게끔 한 다음 또 한 번의 발효 과정을 거친다. 일정한 온도로 천천히 발효가 된 와인은 달지 않고 깊은 맛을 낸다고 한다.와이너리 운영자, 이자벨이 나에게 오크통에서 숙성된다는 화이트 와인 샤도네를 한잔 따라준다. 톡 터지는 탄산의 청량함과 상쾌함이 눈과 귀로 먼저 느껴진다. 샤도네를 화이트 와인의 여왕이라고 부른다는데, 정확한 표현이다. 비교불가의 맛이다.

Celebrating Schengen: Breaking borders within Europe- TEASER
30th anniversary of Schengen agreement (14/06/1985). To help celebrate, eight short testimonial-based videos have been produced. Each video highlights a cross-border activity in the lives of Europeans and third-country nationals.

It was not considered a big deal. Countries only sent a state secretary for the signing of the agreement. You can see on this photograph the state secretaries of the five countries. Most people thought the agreement would only briefly open the borders till the end of the year and that they would then be closed again. No one could imagine at the time that this agreement would have such lasting consequences.

Things are easier now for individual buyers, because they are allowed to take 90 litres per person across the border to their country. But I still have a lot of paperwork to do to clear customs when exporting my wine.

I live in France, two kilometres away. I only come here to have a drink, because it is cheaper over here. And life is better. Petrol is cheaper, tobacco is cheaper; everything is cheaper here.

For goods, it's superb. My trucks leave, they go to Luxemburg, to France, they unload and they come back. As for people, I'm not so sure. Here we have no border any more. Just a little check of the people crossing the border, maybe that wouldn't be such a bad idea.

STORYLINE:
Diplomats from nine new European countries are set to descend upon a little border town for a big ceremony on Tuesday.
They will sign the Schengen Agreement, named after the town that straddles the Moselle river, the historic border between Germany and France.
Most EU member states - except Ireland and the United Kingdom - are already signatories to the agreement, launched in 1985, which allows EU citizens to travel without having to stop at national borders and clear the customs.
It took the founding governments a decade to fully implement the agreement, but now the right to travel passport-free and other related customs measures brings massive economic advantages to hundreds of millions of Europeans.
On Friday, nine new countries, most of them ex-Communist states in eastern Europe, join the zone in a deeply symbolic move, another step in their transition from oppressed Soviet satellites into fully-fledged EU members.
Schengen was originally chosen almost by coincidence, but now the agreement has brought huge benefits to the local community.
