ENGELBRECHT: Sunday Evening Hymn, played on Prince melodeon
J. C. Engelbrecht (John Conrad, 1819-1906) was part of an active musical family in Frederick, Maryland. He later moved to Staunton, Virginia where he worked as an organist and music teacher. This “Sunday Evening Hymn,” dedicated to John Eisenhauer and intended “for the Parlor Organ,” was published in Baltimore in 1876, together with “Christmas Morning,” which I recorded in 2010. The music may be found on the Library of Congress’ American Memory website. The instrument is a Prince melodeon, built in Buffalo, New York c. 1855 (No. 16,967), with two ranks of reeds in a rosewood cabinet. It belongs to Bethany United Methodist Church in San Francisco, where it is used occasionally. It was presented to Grace Methodist Episcopal Church (a predecessor to Bethany) as that church’s first organ in 1866. The melodeon was restored in 2014 by my friends George Lipp and Jim Tyler. Performed by Michael Hendron; recorded 11 August 2017.
