Ancient Beverage Promotes Purity, Peace and Friendship
TREE OF THE MONTH: Native Americans recognize Yaupon Holly, Ilex vomitoria, at the Beloved Tree. It grows as an understory shrub or small tree.
Long before Europeans arrived, Native Americans made a caffeinated beverage, known as the Black Drink, from toasted leaves of this plant. The drink was typically used in rituals promoting purity, peace and friendship. The leaves were traded with tribes outside the plant's natural range. It was offered to former enemies during peacemaking ceremonies. While the recipe can vary between tribes, the full formula was not given to outsiders. It is speculated that the black drink may have contained emetic herbs in addition to yaupon leaves, since rituals often, but not always, included vomiting. Europeans did not vomit when they were given the black drink. Although the scientific name for yaupon holly, Ilex vomitoria, refers to vomiting, the leaves do not cause vomiting.
In my opinion, yaupon leaves make an awesome tea, reminiscent of green tea, but with a better flavor and loaded with caffeine. When collecting the leaves, avoid the red berries. They will make you vomit. Also, do not mistake yaupon holly for the similar looking, toxic, non-native, Chinese privet (Ligustrum sinenese).
There are many different ways to prepare yaupon leaves for tea. The leaves first need to be dried or toasted to release the caffeine, similar to roasting coffee beans. The traditional approach was to cut fresh branches and put them over a fire with hot rocks or a clay bowl until brown. Water was added and the brew was boiled for a while, resulting in a black drink. I prefer to make my tea weaker, so the flavor is similar to green tea. When I make yaupon tea at home, I either 1) air dry the leaves in the garage for a few weeks, 2) dry them on a cookie sheet in an oven set at 175 F for an hour, or 3) roast them on a cookie sheet in an oven at 400 F for a few minutes. Each approach results in a different flavor.
During the American Civil War, yaupon tea was used as a coffee substitute throughout the South. Yaupon was a common drink until the early 1900s when its use was stigmatized as a drink for rural, poor southerners. In the early 2000s yaupon tea began witnessing a resurgence in popularity, and can now be purchased online and at several historical sites related to Native Americans. Tea purchased in this way is expensive, often costing $8 to $10 an ounce.
We will make this tea and hand out packets of yaupon leaves at the Spring Bushcraft Meetup at Big South Fork, 14-18 May 2016.

The poem used in this video was written by David Mason:
Colorado
If gravity is love of earth
the mountains teach us how to fly
and bring us back as rivers flow.
You never need to wonder why
the wild will take your breath away—
that’s how it is in Colorado.
I love her dreaming ranges,
marmot rocks and columbine.
I love the rush of mountain air
snow pluming off the peaks
and top knots of the pines,
the quiet everywhere.
Her great rivers get up and grow.
They carry the topsoil of the soul
to the primal ocean far below.
I love the bluebird and the whisky jack,
the black bear and the antelope,
the cattle drive, the buffalo.
I love the canyons of the Ancient Ones.
Maybe they vanished, maybe they’ve never gone.
Remember them among their dwellings,
pinyon cliff and watchful crow,
the painted hands and animals,
coyote’s canny, covert lope,
the mesas and the grasslands,
the Spanish names, the Ute,
Cheyenne, Arapaho,
the fancy dancer, Indian flute,
the story waiting to be told
as old, as new, as now as Colorado.
I love the switchback trail,
the wide brim shading a rancher’s eyes,
the cat you never see that sees you
under the bluest-ever skies.
Step out on a dare, and see
you’ve come here for the freedom just like me.
To camp above ten thousand feet
is to breathe the air of gods
and drink with rainbow trout.
Some come out west to beat the odds
and find out that the sky’s the limit,
some simply stare—no end to it,
the way you can love a land
and quite a few of the people in it.
Give me the sage in sunlight, warm
even in winter. Give me the moonlit snow.
Give me the book cliffs and the farms,
the wild flowers of Colorado.

Day 43 On The Colorado Trail
These are my Day by Day videos of my 46 day thru-hike of the Colorado Trail in 2014 including the Collegiate Peaks Loop,(East and West). The Colorado Trail is a long-distance trail running for 486 miles (782 km) from the mouth of Waterton Canyon South West of Denver to Durango Colorado.
The Trail is divided into 28 segments and 5 segments that make up the Collegiate West which runs for 80 Miles, Its highest point is 13,271 feet above sea level, and most of the trail is above 10,000 feet. It is often considered one of the most beautiful trail mile for mile in the United States.
I was new to thru hiking and didn’t have any of the proper equipment, so I researched all the gear I’d need, trained really hard and completed the trail with no big issues at all.
I researched the trail and couldn’t find any detailed videos on what the water sources look like, where to resupply, the weather, campsites and how the terrain changes so much in a day.
I made it my goal to capture the trail and my experience on it, in hopes that it will inspire others to get out and explore their own trail just like I got inspired by other people's thru hiking videos.
This is the largest group of videos about the Colorado Trail, and will be a great resource for anyone planning a trip on the Colorado Trail.
Hope these videos help you with planning your adventure on the Colorado Trail.
Thanks for Watching!

Evergreen Mt. bear hunt
I went for an early season bear hunt upto Evergreen Mt, WA with a good friend of mine. We got a pretty late start and were hiking in the dark to the Evergreen lookout. We didn't have enough light to find a place to set up off of the ridge, so we powered through the night and hunted on our way down in the morning. Beautiful area, but sadly, our hunt turned into a hike with guns, as no bears were to be seen. We stopped to pick a decent amount of wild blueberries before getting to the vehicle and heading home.

Top 10 National Parks (4k)
UPDATE: We now have been to Alaska and visited 2 national parks (Kenai Fjords and Denali). Where would they fall on the list? Kenai is amazing and you can see lots of ocean life on a clear day (our day was rainy on the ferry) as well as a couple of tidewater glaciers. A great experience and it would probably fall somewhere near the end of our list (maybe #7 or 8), due to cost and limited accessibility to park features. Denali would also be near the bottom of the list (maybe #9), though it has amazing wilderness and we saw 2 bull moose fighting, it takes a really long time to get to it, has one main road that eventually requires riding a long bus tour, and the main attraction (mount Denali) is only visible 30% of the time (we never saw it). Having said all of this, if they ever turn Prince William Sound into a national park, that would be near the top of our list. It was me and my wife's favorite part of the Alaska trip: Lots of glaciers, lots of wildlife, lots of pristine forest and islands, just beautiful...
...This list covers the Western USA and features photos in 4k. Please feel free to ask us any questions you have about the parks. If you have trouble viewing the video try using a computer or tablet instead of a mobile phone. Hopefully Youtube will fix the issue soon. :)
Update: Yellowstone lake is not the highest fresh water lake in the USA, it's the largest lake at high elevation in the USA (over 7000 ft.). I knew better, but rushed the script and voice over, so it made it into the video (oops).

Bay leaf or Tej patta - an aromatic evergreen tree from India
The bay tree is a popular evergreen shrub suitable for containers or growing in the ground. Kept neatly clipped, the dark-green foliage can create stunning formal shapes that make an entrance or look perfect on a patio. Bay leaves can be used fresh or dried and are used in cooking to give a fragrant flavour to soups, stews and other dishes.

Yampa Bench 4wd Road - Maybell, Colorado
For the full trail guide please visit:
The Yampa Bench 4wd Road offers amazing panoramic views in a beautiful and remote part of Colorado. The switchbacks and smooth red dirt straight-aways lead you to significant historical sites and stunning seclusion on the floor of the canyon at the confluence of the Green River and the Yampa River in Echo Park. Steamboat Rock, visible from the Echo Park Campground is the centerpiece of Dinosaur National Monument. Pictured left is the view from the Harding Hole Overlook (Waypoint 11) a popular stop along the Yampa Bench Road. As you stand on the point of Harding Hole Overlook, you contemplate the time it took for the Yampa River to carve the landscape laid out before you. Listen as the canyon's resident swallows and swifts dive through the air overhead and the only other sounds you hear are the rapids, the breeze and a distant 'moooooo'.
