The Evoramonte castle crowns the escarpment of Serra d' Ossa.
An unusual rectangular building, the castle includes circular towers molded into the structure, providing the castle with an aggressive and powerful characteristics. The building is much larger at the base, and is chamfered to the height of its three storeys, and crowned by large merlons. The three floors are clearly delineated by a ring-shaped cornice at each level, typical of the Manueline style.
Initiated in 1160, in the Gothic period, it was enlarged in later centuries in the Manueline style.
Wars between the Liberal forces of Queen Maria II of Portugal (under the regency of her father Peter VI of Portugal) and Absolutist armies of Miguel of Portugal.
Since 1910, it has been listed as a Portuguese National monument.

Evoramonte Castle, visible many kilometers around it, is made up of an extensive 1000 m perimeter wall, which embraces the crest of an elevation in the rugged surroundings of Serra d´Ossa. This structure is a well-established medieval fence, over 400 m in altitude, with a fortified palace built on top of the crest.
O castelo de Evoramonte, visível muitos quilómetros em redor, é constituído por uma extensa muralha com 1000 m de perímetro, que abraça a crista de uma elevação na envolvente acidentada da Serra d’Ossa. Esta estrutura é uma bem implantada cerca medieval, a mais de 400 m de altitude, com um Paço Fortificado construído no topo da crista.

Dominating the Alentejo plain, at the top of a hill with 481 meters of altitude, there is the Castle of Evoramonte, a town that was distinguished in the history of contemporary Portugal because the Convention was signed there on May 26, 1834, reestablished Peace in Portugal, after several years of bloody civil war between liberals and absolutists.
About your foundation little is known. Probably it was conquered to the Moors by D. Afonso Henriques, in 1166, but there are no reliable sources that can confirm it.
The first mention of Evoramonte arose in the year 1248, when D. Afonso III granted him Charter of Foral, later corroborated and extended in 1271, with the purpose of populating the village.
In 1306, with the aim of protecting the town and its inhabitants, D. Dinis ordered the construction of the medieval walls, which still remain today and maintain their four arched doors from the time of the foundation.
D. Nuno Alvares Pereira receives the village by donation in 1385 and cedes it, in 1461, to his grandson D. Fernando, making it the property of the Duchy of Bragança.
15 of December of 1516 D. Manuel I grants to the town the Charter of Foral of New Reading, confirming the Term Evoramontense.
In February 1531 the village was shaken by a violent earthquake that almost completely destroyed its medieval structures.
To assert the power of the House of Braganza at the time, D. Jaime I and D. Teodósio I had the walls reinforced with cylindrical ramparts and erected the imposing Tower / Paço Ducal, just after the earthquake.
The Tower is a unique example of the transition military architecture, the final Manueline, with no precedent or precedent in Portugal, and which served essentially as the hunting residence of the Dukes of Bragança. Its dominant and scenic position in the middle of the plain fulfills in its entirety the purpose of its construction: to affirm the House of Bragança as the second most powerful of the Kingdom and giving meaning to the maxim After You, We, that is, after of the King, the House of Bragança. This particularity is strongly present in the design of the building, through the Nodes that involve the same and which are a symbol of the Bragantina heraldry, adopted by the architects responsible for its authors, brothers Francisco and Diogo de Arruda.
The Evoramonte Convention was signed at the house of Joaquim António Sarmago, President of the Chamber at the time, and confirmed the victory of the Liberals, followers of D. Pedro IV, under the absolutists, followers of D. Miguel. This war between siblings would thus end in a modest house in the Rua Direita of this town, where the Dukes of Terceira and Saldanha, by the liberals, and General Joaquim Azevedo e Lemos, absolutist chief, signed the Convention, which resulted in the exile of D. Miguel for Austria and in the triumph of Liberalism in Portugal.

For this Sunday and after checking the weather, we decided to visit Évora Monte ( Évoramonte ) a village just 26 Km from Évora, in hopes of finding more about it's history and maybe even finding Dipo the 2300 year old hidden city that some believe to be located here. Even though the lost city remained lost we enjoyed the magnificent views over Serra d'Ossa and the very cosy feeling of the village. Be advised that it's really small, so finding a restaurant or a coffee may prove difficult.

Dance performance by BARINAMO in Castelo de Evoramonte
BARINAMO, a Korean dancer’s couple, had a residency at Foundation OBRAS in September 2014. They did a performance in the fortress of Evoramonte entitled Poong Gyung. It means Wind Shime (a carillon). The dancers responded by improvisation on the fortress, the old memories, the echo, the light, space and wind. The performance consisted of dance movements, body contact improvisation and singing. Visita a Évora e um castelo diferente em Evoramonte | Van life Portugal
Olá! Neste Vlog fizemos uma visita a Évora, depois de uns dias enfiados na Biblioteca a trabalhar. Aproveitamos para estar com a primas do Luís e fizémos um jantar na carrinha (couberam 6 pessoas :D) e depois fomos jogar bowling, infelizmente não filmamos nada, aproveitamos o momento. Depois avançamos para Evoramonte onde nos cruzamos com o castelo mais diferente que alguma vez vimos. Esperamos que tenham gostado do video :)

CASTELO DE ÉVORAMONTE
O Castelo de Evoramonte, no Alentejo, localiza-se na freguesia de Evoramonte, concelho de Estremoz, Distrito de Évora. Erguido num dos pontos mais elevados da serra de Ossa, no centro da povoação, do alto de seus muros domina-se uma grande extensão em redor, até ao Castelo de Estremoz.
História
Antecedentes
Acredita-se que a primitiva ocupação humana deste sítio remonta à pré-história.
O castelo medieval
À época da Reconquista cristã da península Ibérica, a povoação foi conquistada aos mouros pelas forças portuguesas comandadas pelo lendário Geraldo Sem Pavor, por volta de 1160, ocasião em que o castelo terá tido início. As suas defesas foram recuperadas por determinação de D. Afonso III (1248-1279), soberano que lhe outorgou o primeiro foral (1248), renovado em 1271. Estas tentativas de povoamento, entretanto, não parecem ter sido bem sucedidas, uma vez que seu sucessor, D. Dinis (1279-1325), ordenou a fortificação da vila (1306), dele nos tendo chegado a cerca e as portas. Com a ascensão de D. João I ao trono, o Castelo de Evoramonte e seus domínios passaram para a posse do Condestável D. Nuno Álvares Pereira, vindo posteriormente a integrar os domínios da Casa de Bragança.
No início da Idade Moderna, D. Manuel I (1495-1521) concedeu Foral Novo à vila (1516), iniciando-lhe nova etapa construtiva. Ficando a torre de menagem do antigo castelo destruída pelo terramoto de 1531, no ano seguinte, sob a direcção do alcaide-mor, D. Teodósio de Bragança, é reedificado na forma de um Paço de inspiração renascentista italiana, com risco atribuído aos arquitectos Diogo e Francisco de Arruda.
Do século XIX aos nossos dias
A povoação e seu castelo perderam importância estratégica ao longo dos séculos. Aqui foi assinada a Convenção de Evoramonte (26 de Maio de 1834) encerrando as Guerras Liberais. Finalmente, a 24 de Outubro de 1855 o seu concelho foi definitivamente extinto, e o seu antigo termo repartido pelos concelhos vizinhos de Estremoz, Évora, Arraiolos e Redondo.
O castelo e a cerca da vila foram considerados como Monumento Nacional por Decreto publicado em 23 de Junho de 1910. Os trabalhos de consolidação e restauro iniciaram-se ao final da década de 1930 prosseguindo na de 1940. Novas campanhas de intervenções sucederam-se de 1971 a 1987, conferindo ao monumento o seu actual aspecto.
Características
O castelo, em alvenaria de pedra e cantaria de granito, apresenta planta quadrangular, com torreões circulares nos vértices, misturando elementos do estilo gótico com o estilo renascentista de inspiração italiana. Internamente divide-se em três pavimentos, com tectos em abóbada, assentes em pilares de cantaria. Nos torreões mais largos na base do que no topo, rasgam-se viseiras. Os panos são ornados com nós esculpidos em pedra, típicos do estilo manuelino.
