There are a couple of chances this weekend to spend a buck or two for a good cause.
On Saturday the Friends of the Excelsior Library will hold their annual spring used book sale. Most books are priced at $1 or less, and proceeds benefit library programming sponsored by the Friends.
The sale is from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 301 County Road 19 in Excelsior.
On Sunday the Sons of the Excelsior American Legion Squadron 259 is sponsoring an omelette breakfast to benefit the Southshore Community Center. Breakfast is $9 for adults, $5 for children and will be served from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at American Legion Post 259, 24450 Smithtown Road in Shorewood
April 15 is generally known as Tax Day in the United States, but a determined group of people from across Minnesota turned out to make it an anti-tax day at the State Capitol in St. Paul Wednesday afternoon. Nearly 10,000 individuals showed up to shout, cheer and wave placards, all in the name of calling attention to what they believe are ill-fated buyouts and high budget deficits. The St. Paul version of the TEA Party was part of a national protest movement played out in hundreds of cities across the United States.

Wayzata Today TV news - April 22 - Wayzata Bay Center to host community events
With the redevelopment of the Wayzata Bay Center pushed back to next year due to the instability of the economy, Presbyterian Homes announced this week that it would be hosting a number of events to help keep the center a viable venue for community and charitable events throughout the redevelopment process and carry that into the new Bay Center as well.
Beginning this Friday, the center will host for the 20th straight year an exhibit of art from students of the Wayzata School District. Art will be displayed from all 11 Wayzata schools and all grades with a total of over 800 pieces of art on display. The display will be placed throughout the entire common area of the Bay Center and run through May 11th. There will be a special art opening celebration on May 2nd from 1:00 - 3:00 p.m., when refreshments will be served.
The Bay Center will also host a huge gift and toy sale put on by the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life beginning today and concluding Saturday, April 25th. This sale sells products donated by local companies at a substantial discount with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society. The products that will be sold include educational toys and books that will be discounted up to 80%, scrapbooking supplies and party supplies with values up to $30, with most selling for just $1.
On May 7th and May 8th, the Bay Center will also host the Waytonka Club's annual rummage sale. The Waytonka Club is a not for profit organization that raises funds to provide scholarships and other donations for the Wayzata community and local charities. One key goal for the 2009 rummage sale is to provide three $1,000 sholarships for Wayzata area students who plan to go into a medical field. The Waytonka Club was founded in 1937 and since then the club has donated over $100,000 in scholarships to Wayzata students.
All items sold at the rummage sale are donated and represent a wide range of gently used toys, housewares, clothes, furniture and more. 100% of the proceeds from the sale will go to fund local Wayzata area charities in addition to the scholarship program. Sale hours are 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on May 7th and 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on May 8th.
Plymouth Primavera
Plymouth has become known nationally for its emphasis on the arts. Over the past couple days, the community has been celebrating Primavera, featuring a variety of fine arts offerings for young and old alike. The event at Plymouth Creek Center features and art contest, music and theatrical performances and a host of other artistic endeavors. Here's a look at what Primavera had to offer.

Truman, the Democratic nominee, defeated Republican Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Truman's victory is considered to be one of the greatest election upsets in American history.Truman had acceded to the presidency in April 1945 after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945. Defeating attempts to drop him from the ticket, Truman won the presidential nomination at the 1948 Democratic National Convention. The Democratic convention's civil rights plank caused a walk-out by several Southern delegates, who launched a third-party Dixiecrat ticket led by Governor Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. The Dixiecrats hoped to win enough electoral votes to force a contingent election in the House of Representatives, where they could extract concessions from either Dewey or Truman in exchange for their support. Truman also faced a challenge from the left in the form of former Vice President Henry A. Wallace, who launched the Progressive Party and challenged Truman's confrontational Cold War policies. Dewey, who was the leader of his party's moderate eastern wing and had been the 1944 Republican presidential nominee, defeated Senator Robert A. Taft and other challengers at the 1948 Republican National Convention.
Truman's feisty campaign style energized his base of traditional Democrats, consisting of most of the white South, as well as Catholic and Jewish voters; he also fared surprisingly well with Midwestern farmers. Dewey ran a low risk campaign and largely avoided directly criticizing Truman. With the three-way split in the Democratic Party, and with Truman's low approval ratings, Truman was widely considered to be the underdog in the race. Virtually every prediction (with or without public opinion polls) indicated that Truman would be defeated by Dewey.
Defying predictions of his defeat, Truman won the 1948 election, garnering 303 electoral votes to Dewey's 189. Truman won 49.6% of the popular vote compared to Dewey's 45.1%, while the third party candidacies of Thurmond and Wallace each won less than 3% of the popular vote, with Thurmond carrying four southern states. Truman's surprise victory was the fifth consecutive presidential win for the Democratic Party, the longest winning streak for either party since the 1880 election. With simultaneous success in the 1948 congressional elections, the Democrats regained control of both houses of Congress, which they had lost in 1946. Thus, Truman's election confirmed the Democratic Party's status as the nation's majority party.

San Francisco (SF; ; Spanish for 'Saint Francis'; Spanish: [ˈsãɱ fɾãnˈsisko]), officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. San Francisco is the 13th most populous city in the United States, and the 4th most populous in California, with 884,363 residents as of 2017. It covers an area of about 46.89 square miles (121.4 km2), mostly at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, making it the second most densely populated large US city, and the fifth most densely populated U.S. county, behind only four of the five New York City boroughs. The Assassination of Jesse James
The names ricochet through Western lore. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) was the most notorious outlaw of his time, wanted by the law in 10 states yet celebrated as a Robin Hood in newspapers and dime novels. Teenaged Robert Ford (Casey Affleck) idolized Jesse, sought his friendship, rode with him. It wasn't enough. The up-and-comer wanted his shot at fame. And when he got it, he took it. Roswell Incident: Department of Defense Interviews - Gerald Anderson / Glenn Dennis
A first-hand account from Gerald Anderson similarly offered descriptions that seemingly matched dummies: thought they were plastic dolls, he said. More on Roswell:
He also described a blimp, further suggesting a misidentified military recovery operation. A description of a jeep-like truck that had a bunch of radios in it sounds very much like a modified Dodge M-37 utility truck not used until 1953, further suggesting a confusion about dates.
In 1997, the Air Force, in response to Congressional inquiries, issued the second of two reports which they asserted accounted for the reports of aliens recovered at Roswell in 1947. The report, entitled The Roswell Report: Case Closed had a section which specifically dealt with the Dennis claims. While identifying a possible match to the nurse Dennis had said was a witness (see above), the report additionally linked descriptions of bodies and high security to several known and documented incidents, albeit ones which occurred years after 1947. As evidence that the event Dennis described contained elements from much later real events, the report cited the presence of a black sergeant paired with a white officer, a pairing it described as unlikely as the Army Air Force was racially segregated in 1947, and Dennis' use of the term airman, a term not employed until 1952.
A June 26, 1956 aircraft accident supplied many of the elements of Dennis' account, said the report. On that day, 11 crew members were killed when a propeller blade punctured the plane's fuel tank, creating an inferno. The charred and mangled remains of the crew were taken to Walker Air Force Base (the former Roswell base) and identification specialist George Schwader arrived from Wright-Patterson AFB. He said in an interview that he was frequently mistaken for a pathologist because of his working garb.
The corpses had to be moved to a refrigerated part of the base, owing to the overpowering odor of the bodies. Three of the victims were autopsied by Dr. Alfred Blauw, a local physician, and the autopsies were performed at the Ballard Funeral Home, where Dennis was employed.
A second incident accounts for the description of the canoe-like object Dennis said he saw in the back of a vehicle, and some of the high-handed treatment he received from officers at the base, including from a tall red-headed captain. A May 1959 accident of a low-altitude balloon, part of the Excelsior program, saw the three injured crewmen flown to Walker AFB. The mere fact of the accident caused consternation for the crewmen as the project was controversial and there was a very real prospect that word of the accident might lead to the program's cancellation. The controversy surrounded the wisdom of parachuting attempts from balloons some 100,000 feet in the atmosphere. Accordingly, much secrecy surrounded the project, as can be corroborated by a 1961 book written by a participant, Captain Joseph Kittinger, The Long Lonely Leap. Kittinger, redheaded and six foot one, likely was the red-headed captain Dennis referred to who Dennis claimed said You did not see anything. There was no crash here. You don't go into town making any rumors that you saw anything or that there was any crash. The report asserts that Dennis was in fact witnessing the arrival of the three injured crewman and was subsequently warned to be quiet, but so as to preserve the Excelsior program. Kittinger would go on to make those high-altitude leaps, one at 102,800 feet in 1960 still stands as the all-time record.
The three-man Excelsior crew had been escorted by ambulances, and descriptions by Dennis closely match what would have been present that day. He reported what he thought was wreckage in the back of one ambulance which was kinda like the bottom of a canoe... like stainless steel... with a kind-of bluish-purplish tinge to it. This description, the report notes, accurately describes two steel panels painted Air Force blue on a converted ambulance for this mission. Other descriptions such as wreckage all over the floor looking like broken glass corresponds to the clear plastic polyethylene balloon recovered from the mission.
The heightened state of security Dennis described sounds very much like the extra security which occurred upon the arrival of the Excelsior team. The very presence of the balloon crew, who had arrived unannounced, likely led many base personnel to believe they may have posed a security threat or were a team from Strategic Air Command testing the nuclear-armed facility's alertness. Either way, the base's personnel would have been far more vigilant that day, and this may account for the heavy-handedness reported by Dennis.

Bill Wells resigns as Orono City Administrator - Lake Minnetonka Today TV news, Friday, Aug. 14
Just a year after it settled on a replacement for its long-time city administrator, the Orono City Council will begin the search process all over again.
At its Monday night meeting, the council accepted the resignation of Bill Wells, who was hired by the council last August to replace Ron Moorse, who had served as city administrator from 1991 to 2008.
In his resignation letter, Wells cited family issues as the reason for his resignation.
Due to the illness of a family member and the growing demand to provide personal care, I feel unable to give the time and effort required to successfully carry out the duties of the city administrator as I would like to at this time, Wells wrote in his resignation letter. I have enjoyed serving the council and citizens of Orono and much has been accomplished in the past year of which we can all be proud.
Councilmember Jim Murphy said this morning that Wells is a good guy and had done a good job, but it was apparent that there were times in the past few months that Wells' mind was somewhere else.
Wells' resignation is effective on Dec. 31, although with accumulated sick and vacation time he is no longer in the office and his name has been removed from the city's website.
Murphy added that in the terms of Wells' contract, the city was required to pay 90 days of severance pay, but elected to stretch it out until the end of the year so that Wells could continue contributing to his Public Employees Retirement Association account.
Mayor Jim White said that the council has asked city staff for their input on the situation.
We have asked staff to gather their collective wisdom and advice for the council about which strengths and skills they feel are to be sought after in any applicant for the 'corner office,' White said. Staff is our most important city investment and we and they function well as a team.
Weekend Events
Jodi Livon, a Plymouth resident, and nationally known intuitive coach will host a launch party and signing for her new book, The Happy Medium: Awakening to Your Natural Intuition, from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at Borders Books in Minnetonka.
Livon will speak about her life as an intuitive - she said she was a reluctant one and her book explained why. In The Happy Medium, she explores stereotypes and misconceptions, and unveils truths about psychic ability. Borders is located at 1501 Plymouth Road.
It will be the Battle of the Badges tomorrow afternoon in Long Lake when members of the Long Lake Fire Department square off against members of the Orono Police Department in a softball game.
The game will start at 1 p.m. and will be held at Holbrook Park, 310 Harrington Drive in Long Lake.
The Hopkins Elks will host its 15th annual Who Let the Hogs Out Ribfest at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Elks Lodge.
Outside the Lines will perform music 1 to 5 p.m. Winners for best ribs and best booth will be announced 3 p.m. The menu will include ribs, coleslaw, beans and potato salad. The Elks Lodge is located at 30 Eighth Ave. S.
