Dubrovnik:
Dubrovnik is a stunningly intact walled city on the Adriatic Sea coast of the extreme south of Croatia. Although its population barely exceeds 40,000, it's one of the most prominent tourist resorts of the Mediterranean and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Dubrovnik is both a seaport and the centre of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its population was 42,615 inhabitants according to census data from 2011. Dubrovnik is nicknamed Pearl of the Adriatic. Tourism is the most important industry in Dubrovnik. The city of Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Furthermore, Dubrovnik was one of the centres of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.
Place featured:
Lovrijenac Fort, Dubrovnik:
The people of Dubrovnik built the fort in order to protect the western sea access to the City, particularly from the Venetian fleet. The construction began in 1018 and was completed in the 16th century. The thickness of the walls facing the sea is between 4 and 12 metres. Above the entrance is an inscription in Latin language: NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO (Freedom is not sold for all the gold of the world). The fort houses a chapel of St. Lawrence, and its courtyard with a cistern serves as a magical venue for theatrical performances. A large number of plays has been performed here within the Dubrovnik Summer Festival programme. Compared with Elsinore, Lovrijenac Fort has become the perfect world famous setting for Shakespeares Hamlet. The fort is opened for visitors.
Pile Gate, Dubrovnik:
The natural starting point to any visit to Dubrovnik, this fabulous city gate was built in 1537. While crossing the drawbridge, imagine that this was once lifted every evening, the gate closed and the key handed to the rector. Notice the statue of St Blaise, the city’s patron saint, set in a niche over the Renaissance arch.
Stradun, Dubrovnik:
Stradun (or officially ‘Placa’) is the main street in Dubrovnik Old Town. It divides the Old town (part of Dubrovnik built within medieval walls) on two, more or less, equal parts – northern and southern. Stradun is stretched from Pile Gate (western entrance to the old town) to the Old Town’s port. It used to be a channel that divided small island on which Dubrovnik was built from the mainland. Later on, the channel was filled to create the main town’s street.

EP 28: SURISE IN CROATIA | At Our Private Beach!
Hope you guys enjoyed today's video! We woke up bright and early to catch the sunrise at our new favorite secret beach in Rabac, Croatia. Unfortunately we couldn't see as much of the sunrise as we were expecting but it was still gorgeous. We enjoyed the morning sun and got lots of swimming time in before it was time to pack up. We then headed to the town of Labin, Croatia. Labin is situated on a cliffside with beautiful views. It is full of old buildings and cobblestone alleyways. Definitely worth a day trip. It was almost 100 degrees fahrenheit in Croatia today so we couldn't stay out in the sun too long. We ended the day on our sea view balcony at our Airbnb.

Enlighten. Brighten. Light up. Amaze! Incandescence. Luminescence. Illusion. Confusion!
Light art is a new discipline that has escaped the confines of museum walls, its artists using as their canvas the city, its buildings, its monuments, the night sky itself. Part art, part design, architecture and entertainment spectacle, the festival both brings you something beautiful to look at and something to make you see your world differently.
Festivals of Light are bringing an exciting new dimension to ever more cities around the world, enrobing their famous monuments in vivid hues or using them as an integral part of creative works.
In 2017 Zagreb’s very first Festival of Lights was a four-day celebration of spring that included experiencing a light harp and challenged visitors to win a prize in a unique laser maze.
Festival of Lights Zagreb is one of the first events heralding the new tourist season, enticing us outside to enjoy a spring night in the city and to witness innovative art and the joy of light. Just one more reason to visit Zagreb!
From Croatia.hr web site
From March 20th till March 24th, the capital of Croatia will host the Festival of Lights Zagreb. With the support of the City of Zagreb and in organization by the Zagreb Tourist Board, the historic center will be illuminated with the cutting-edge lighting solutions based on very recent lighting technologies.
Festival of Lights Zagreb is the only festival of its kind in our city, and attractive audio-visual installations and projections will come to life at various locations of Upper Town. The theme of the festival is the spring that symbolizes the awakening, growth and renaissance, therefore each of the locations will try to evoke the springtime through light performances that will be held from 6 to 11 pm.
With the five-day festival, Zagreb will join the other world cities that have a tradition of holding such festivals, like Lyon, Amsterdam, Helsinki, Prague, St. Petersburg or Berlin. The intention is that the Festival of Lights Zagreb becomes a perennial tourist product with the aim of generating greater tourist traffic at this time of year.
Behind the scenes on the set of 'Game of Thrones' in Dubrovnik
'GAME OF THRONES' TAKES OVER DUBROVNIK
Game of Thrones has become a fixture in Croatia's most popular tourist city.
Cast and crew returned to Dubrovnik in late September and early October, to film scenes for the hit HBO series for the fourth year in a row, to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
The walled Adriatic city has proved a fitting location for King's Landing, the Lannister's seat of royal power.
Its crystal blue sea and centuries-old locations are tipped to be a backdrop for next season as well.
This year was more action-packed, more staff doing with their extras, so this year we acted more, said Ante Malbasa, a souvenir shop-keeper and a Game of Thrones extra. Definitely they will do next season in Dubrovnik, because King's Landing is shooting here, it's a capital city.
There have been a couple of problems, though.
Local media says production staff had trouble finding extras that would fit the show's costumes, as Croatian men and women are traditionally taller than those usually featured in the series.
And, Croatia's Catholic Church has not allowed Lena Headey's character, Cersei Lannister, to walk naked from Dubrovnik's Cathedral, so another location had to be found for that scene, Croatian media reported.
None of which detered the tourists, who now often include a Game of Thrones tour on their must-do list, as they visit.
This year it is really popular and everyone already knows and people are really excited when they saw that and they are really interested in this, our tour. Old and young, all ages, all ages. Really popular, good thing, said tourism worker Igor Cvrlje.
Some tours also include a bit of local history.
So, we have a three-hour walking tour that takes you to all the filming locations, where second, third and fourth season were filmed here in Dubrovnik. Our guide is actually a licensed guide of Dubrovnik, so they give you a bit of history behind what you are seeing, not just the filming locations. explains Maja Radojicic of the tour she represents. And he has little note pads, so you can literally recognize which scene was filmed where and see what happened behind scenes.
As well as Dubrovnik, the latest season of Game of Thrones also filmed in the coastal towns of Split and Sibenik.

In April 2017 I left Australia for a solo trip around the world on a BMW F800GS. I named it “Are We There Yet” because I don't know my final destination or the duration of this journey.
Croatia was the 25th country I visited. It was mid-October and for the first time, I copped some rain. Fair enough, I’d had such a great ride up until then so I guess I couldn’t complain too much. I detoured to the highway and bumped into Nora and Jojo (Adventurism) again! I spent two days in Zadar – a gorgeous little town and headed further South to Bosnia and Montenegro. After a few days, I came back to Croatia to Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik even at this time of the year was overcrowded and expensive but definitely worth seeing. It's a very unique city.
If you wish to get more details on my visit to Croatia, check out my blog post:
Throughout my journey, I'm raising money for a young disabled child in Poland named Franek. Franek was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (weakness of the entire right side of the body) and he will require constant rehabilitation for the rest of his life. All the money raised will go directly to helping Franek and his family lead as normal a life as possible so please donate generously:
Ep10 - Sailing the Mediterranean in Winter
We really enjoyed sailing around Ibiza and Formentera off season, but the weather can be changeable in November so in this episode we see another side of the Med.
Strong winds, big seas combined with short days meant sailing back to mainland Spain from the Balearics was testing. The wind was strong enough to blow out our staysail and break the roller reefing on the Yankee but we still enjoyed our voyage back to Cartagena.
Winter jobs on the boat begin, we talk to our neighbours about replacing their standing rigging and their amazing sailing and skiing lifestyle.
There's even an item on 'Back & Fill' the best way to manoeuvre a Long keeled boat.
It's a packed episode! Hope you like it! (don't forget to subscribe!!)

OUR ADVENTURE:
We are sailing slowly around the world in our classic cutter rigged sailboat 'Fair Isle'. With the children leaving home we decided to sell our house in the UK and buy a boat in Holland. After two years refitting our Hans Christian 48T we have now set off a world voyage.
We are retiring early because we want to attempt this voyage in good health and while we're fit and strong enough to really enjoy it. We will have to work a bit as we go until we can draw our pensions and we honestly don't know how well that will work. In our real lives we are journalists and filmmakers so it was only natural for use to document our travels by filming the journey. We aim to produce a professional standard vlog of the whole trip and try to give the viewer a real insight into what it's like to live and travel on a 48 foot sailboat.
Our first aim is to sail South. After a winter getting iced in on the Markermeer in the Netherlands Judy insisted on warmer weather! So if you start from Episode 1 you will see us setting off from Eastbourne in the UK and travelling along the South Coast to Plymouth to enter a rally called ARC Portugal.
Our first goal is to reach the Mediterranean and that means sailing across the infamous Bay of Biscay. This was a very good test for our boat as the bay lived up to it's fearsome reputation and split the whole fleet with a force 10 storm. Storm Miguel cut through our path and meant we had to run to mainland Spain to escape the massive seas and fearsome winds. Six boats couldn't make it in time and spent several very uncomfortable days at sea. The fleet had several broken boats, but thankfully no injured people. And this was just Episode 2!
The excitement continued for the rest of our trip to the Med. Dolphins played in our bow wave, we sampled fantastic local foods and wines, great port in Porto! We found some beautiful anchorages and visit some wonderful historic places like Lisbon in Portugal, Cadiz in Spain and the fascinating port of Gibraltar.
We will show you what it's like to winter in the Mediterranean, how much it all costs and give hints and tips on where to go how to save money with your boat and the places you stay. We are also talking to other sailors. After years of broadcasting journalism we know how to get peoples stories and we regularly film other sailors to show their boats and lifestyle as well as ours. We can always learn from others.
Our long term plan is to spend a few years in the Mediterranean, on our list of place we want to visit are; Mallorca, Malta, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Italy, Tunisia, to name but a few!
When we feel we've seen the best of what the Med has to offer we will cross the Atlantic to the Caribbean, we are hoping we can fit in a trip to the Azores on the way.
We have no idea how long we might want to stay in the Caribbean but we do intend to have at least one excursion up the Eastern seaboard of the United States to visit the wonderful sailing areas of Florida, Virginia, sailing Meccas such as Chesapeake bay and hopefully get all the way up to New York.
Of course the South Pacific is somewhere every sailor wants to go and will be a real draw for us. So going through the Panama canal will be a real milestone and we really look forward to having the big doors shut behind us and sailing into the biggest sailing playground of all!

Dubrovnik - Croatia
If you ask anyone what springs to mind when they hear the name Croatia, the chances are they'll say „Dubrovnik, as this beautiful city deservedly basks in worldwide fame. Its main attraction, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is the complex of city walls encircling a city of spellbinding beauty. If you visit at the height of summer, it's likely you'll spot a celeb or two in Dubrovnik, but it's equally likely you'll get to know the city itself less well: while the Old Town is heaving with people, you'll miss the vista of the shining paving stones of Stradun, the main street of the Old Town. Once you've done the obligatory tour of the main sights, we highly recommend a visit to the Dubrovnik Art Gallery which organises an international exhibition every year, and the local museums where you'll get to know the history of the city. Visiting the local towns and villages is a must if you spend your holiday in Dubrovnik. Konavle, the hinterland region, offers the chance to get to know the folk customs of the region and its traditional cuisine, and the town of Cavtat is a picturesque gem where you'll find the family home of the artist Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922), one of Croatia's finest painters. Out to sea, you can visit the green islet of Lokrum just of Dubrovnik's shore, the tiny, sleepy Elafiti islands and, if you can fit it all in, the islands of Mljet and Korcula which are another story altogether.
