Tai chi in Beijing
The people are communal. They don't sit in their apartments alone or even in cafes. And they like their tea.
They prefer the parks, riding their bikes in ridiculously dangerous traffic, exercising in the parks, playing cards, majong or tai chi.
And they don't start with small talk... they get right down to it. I can't write down some of the questions I was asked because I'm keeping it PG. I was touched, hugged, tugged, called sister friend and lady-- sometimes by the same person. I was poked, prodded and photo-ed. Read the whole article at

CHINA: TAI CHI EXHIBITION ON TIANANMEN SQUARE
Mandarin/Nat
Over ten thousand people gathered on Tiananmen Square in Beijing for a mass exhibition of the traditional Chinese exercises known as Tai Chi or Taijiquan.
The late Deng Xiaoping gave his approval to Taijiquan in the 1970s.
The discipline was chosen to mark the 40th anniversary of China's Martial Arts Association and it provided Taijiquan amateurs from Chinese communities across Asia with an opportunity to show off their skills.
This morning's commemorative performance of Taijiquan on Tian'anmen Square echoes a common practice throughout China's parks every morning.
This branch of Chinese martial arts originated in the seventeenth century as an amalgam of other Chinese boxing forms which have existed for thousands of years.
But it was not until the eighteenth century that famous master Wang Zongyue systemised it and baptised it Taijiquan.
Believed to be one of the keys to longevity by Chinese people, Taijiquan is enjoyed by masses of amateurs.
Today's groups and clubs on Tian'anmen Square came from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as well as the mainland.
Originally one of China's fighting arts, Taijiquan has developed into a therapeutic and health-building exercise.
The movements are slow and demand a high level of concentration.
Many believe that this gives Taijiquan a holistic power to heal and maintain one's mental and physical health.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
It's very healthy for the whole body, inside and out.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop, Zhang Guanyi, 69 years-old
Most Taijiquan amateurs today are not exactly youngsters.
Often associated with the groups of retired men and women who fill China's public parks, many young people feel Taijiquan is old-fashioned.
SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin)
In general, most people start Taijiquan in their forties or fifties; there are also some who start in their thirties. There are some young people, but very few. How to lead young people to Taijiquan - this is our duty. More people should engage in this kind of work. Because, Taijiquan is good for young and old people.
SUPER CAPTION: Vox-pop, Gong Xinfeng, 49 years-old
Luckily for future generations, young Taijiquan masters do exist.
They are usually martial arts experts who engage in many different forms of Chinese boxing.
Taijiquan itself has many different schools.
But no matter what the faction, the basic principles are the same: relaxation and serenity -- a welcome break from today's frenzied city life.

Chinese parks: Taichi and ... (Yunnan, China)
In China, you don't need to go to a gym to be in good shape. In the parks people of all ages practice taichi, play, sing, dance, relax and, above all, relate to each other.
The images were recorded in 2009 in Lijiang and Kunming (Yunnan, China).
THIS VIDEO HAS NO COMMERCIAL PURPOSE.
Taichi in the Temple of Heaven - Beijing
After a walking around Beijing I recorded a simple set of Taiji Yang style movements in the Temple of Heaven to share it with students, friends and people interested in Taijiquan (Taichi).
This sequence is composed of 10 movements all of which are used in the Yang 24 Simplified Form. Yang 10 form is often referred to as Yang 8 form. Both are the same but Yang 8 does not count commencing form and closing form.
I love this routine for its simplicity and rooting for Yang style. Easy to learn and effective for the daily practice of Taiji is possible to execute the full routine in a small area and few minutes.
Enjoy it and feel free to contact me if you are visiting China or just want to know more about chinese martial arts.
The Temple of Heaven is an imperial complex of religious buildings situated in the southeastern part of central Beijing. The complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for good harvest. It has been regarded as a Taoist temple, although Chinese heaven worship, especially by the reigning monarch of the day, predates Taoism.
