Tibetan Quarters - Traditional Tibetan Food | This is Chengdu, China
Chengdu is the last major city before Tibet. Because of this, there is a large Tibetan population in Chengdu. The majority of the people hangout in one area, just south of Wuhou Temple, in what is known as the Tibetan Quarters or Little Lhasa.
We explore the area, poking our heads into the many shops that sell traditional Tibetan clothing, decorations, and souvenirs. We grab some Tibetan food - sha balep (yak meat cooked into a bread), as well as some momos (dumplings with cheese and potato). In Chengdu, Tibetan themed cafes are becoming popular. I try a coffee made with yak's milk while Sara samples some yak milk yogurt.
If you're interested in the Tibetan culture, Chengdu is a great jumping off point for visits to Tibetan towns. For a guide on how to do this without a permit, and without having to take a tour, visit my guide: An Alternate Way to Experience Tibet:

Computer City - A Chinese Electronics Market // This is Chengdu, China
Computer City is a small section of Chengdu that has multiple electronic stores. These are multi-floored buildings that are full of independent-vendor's booths. If you have the time to browse, it's the place to go to buy a computer, camera, phone, and other electronic devices. Just be sure to barter hard.

Chinese Food Sichuan - Chinese Street Food - Street Food China
Chinese food gets more interesting the deeper you go. I set off for Chinese street food and cuisine in deep southern Sichuan province by bicycle. I rode my bike down deep into Southern China's lush and mountainous liangshan region, in search of delicious Chinese street food and Chinese food. The Chinese food really was different in this region. The liangshan region is home to Chinese Yi ethnic minority, who have their own cuisine. It was very rural and in some areas also very poor, so I had difficulty finding the yi cuisine at first. Later in the second half of the video, I found a Yi restaurant and had a Chinese food feast! The little village I visited was called Butuo, about 120 km from Xichang.

Tagong, Sichuan At 1000 Mantras A Second: Tibet in China 2
After a 3 hour van ride into the mountains, we arrived in Tagong, a small town in the Garze grasslands. The chilly mountain air did not keep up from exploring the area. We hiked the hills, finding semi-nomadic yak herders and an insane amount of yaks. Yaks are a huge part of life in Tibet. They're slowly becoming one of my favorite animals.
We also visited the Tagong Monastery, where we observed the prayer wheels in action. Many people come out everyday and do a lap around the monastery, spinning large wheels as they do it. Every wheel spun is the equivalent to saying the 1000 or so mantras that are written on the wheels. They're called mani wheels and, even if it seems like cheating a bit, the process is beautiful to watch.
This is part 2 of 3 of Tibet in China, which gives you an alternate way to experience Tibet, without the hassle of a permit, and without having to take a tour.

China-Tibet (Xining-Lhasa) railway - an analysis
Images used are sourced from Google Earth and their content providers. An analysis of the railway link between China and Tibet
Rediscovering China. Tibetan Regeneration.
Tibet had made notable achievements in the past 60 years and its development reflected the requirements of social advancement and the fundamental wishes of the Tibetan people. After the peaceful liberation of Tibet, the Central People's Government actively helped Tibet protect and recover its traditional culture, and develop its modern cultural, educational and health sectors, opening up a completely new chapter for the development of Tibetan culture. Today more and more young people accept education and they want to lead a city life.

Wide and Narrow Alleys - Chinese Street Food | This is Chengdu, China
Locally known as Kuan-Zhai Xiangzhi (“kuan” = wide, “zhai” = narrow, “xiangzi” = alley), the Wide-Narrow Alleys of Chengdu are very much a tourist attraction in the city. The two pedestrian streets are packed with food and shopping. The buildings are chic versions of ancient China. At night, the alleys light up and tourists jump from vendor to vendor eating traditional street food and buying up an assortment of souvenirs.
The wide and narrow alleys are cool, but they don't really feel like traditional China. We go a few blocks north in the same neighborhood to get a sense of what the area feels like without all the bells and whistles... or in Chinese: gongs and selfie-sticks. We also grab a couple bowls of amazing food.

Chengdu, Sichuan & Tibet, China - September 2019
Two week biking trip through the Sichuan area of China, starting and ending in Chengdu
Views From The Top: Sichuan Tibetan Culture Explore
This time, I was lucky enough to participate in the yearly religious ceremony of Gyalrong Tibetans when I visited Sichuan, China with my family in June 2019. It was a very new experience for me to be involved with the tibetan culture and lived on top of mountain for a whole week when I was there. This short video is made with my respect to the culture and my admiration for the beauty of mountains.
