Milwaukee: A City Built on Water | Program |
[Original Airdate: April 22, 2015]
Historian John Gurda explores how the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan spurred Milwaukee's growth. The settlers used rivers and Lake Michigan to transport grain, lumber, leather and beer, but water was just as important for play as it was for work. Gurda explains how the Milwaukee River became a destination for fun. Learn how the lower Milwaukee River was eventually reduced to an open sewer by 1900, with Lake Michigan suffering similar indignities. Only in recent decades have the currents turned for the better. From the Milwaukee River Greenway to the reborn Menomonee Valley to the cultural theme park on our downtown lakefront, the patterns of the past are being reversed, providing cause for celebration as well as concern.

Totally Random, Totally Wonderful: Milwaukee
Milwaukee is the city built on beer and brewing that is also an Old-Fashioneds oasis and Bloody Mary metropolis. It is America’s Third Coast with the flying Milwaukee Art Museum on Lake Michigan and the home base of Harley-Davidson. Milwaukee is the community of culinary convergences from traditional fare like cheese curds and bratwurst to cuisine created by James Beard-recognized chefs. The city is the site of the tavern that pedals on the pavement and paddles on the water. All of it is totally random, totally wonderful, and totally Milwaukee.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Minocqua (#808)
[Original Airdate: February 21, 2019]
Most people go to Minocqua to play in the north woods of Wisconsin – and there is no finer playground. If you are thinking about cabins, lakes, waterski shows and supper clubs, then you are right on the money. But after this half hour, you’ll also think of jerky, popcorn, zoo safaris and vitamins – no kidding! Hopefully you’ll also gain an understanding of its true culture, one that is rich with Ojibwe and founding family histories. The word “eclectic” comes to mind. But “rejuvenating” may be the best description of Minocqua.

Chicago, officially the City of Chicago, is the most populous city in Illinois, as well as the third most populous city in the United States. With an estimated population of 2,716,450 (2017), it is the most populous city in the Midwest. Chicago is the principal city of the Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland, and the county seat of Cook County, the second most populous county in the United States. The metropolitan area, at nearly 10 million people, is the third-largest in the United States, and the fourth largest in North America (after Mexico City, New York City and Los Angeles) and the third largest metropolitan area in the world by land area.
Located on the shores of freshwater Lake Michigan, Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837 near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershedand grew rapidly in the mid-19th century. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which destroyed several square miles and left more than 100,000 homeless, the city made a concerted effort to rebuild. The construction boom accelerated population growth throughout the following decades, and by 1900 Chicago was the fifth largest city in the world. Chicago made noted contributions to urban planning and zoning standards, including new construction styles (including the Chicago School of architecture), the development of the City Beautiful Movement, and the steel-framed skyscraper.
Chicago is an international hub for finance, culture, commerce, industry, technology, telecommunications, and transportation. It is the site of the creation of the first standardized futures contracts at the Chicago Board of Trade, which today is the largest and most diverse derivatives market gobally, generating 20% of all volume in commoditiesand financial futures. O'Hare International Airport is the one of the busiest airports in the world, and the region also has the largest number of U.S. highways and greatest amount of railroad freight. In 2012, Chicago was listed as an alpha global city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and it ranked seventh in the entire world in the 2017 Global Cities Index. The Chicago area has one of the highest gross domestic products (GDP) in the world, generating $680 billion in 2017. In addition, the city has one of the world's most diversified and balanced economies, not being dependent on any one industry, with no single industry employing more than 14% of the workforce.
Chicago's 58 million domestic and international visitors in 2018, made it the second most visited city in the nation, behind New York City's approximate 65 million visitors. The city ranked first place in the 2018 Time Out City Life Index, a global quality of life survey of 15,000 people in 32 cities. Landmarks in the city include Millennium Park, Navy Pier, the Magnificent Mile, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum Campus, the Willis (Sears) Tower, Grant Park (Chicago), the Museum of Science and Industry, and Lincoln Park Zoo. Chicago's culture includes the visual arts, literature, film, theater, comedy (especially improvisational comedy), food, and music, particularly jazz, blues, soul, hip-hop, gospel, and electronic dance music including house music. Of the area's many colleges and universities, the University of Chicago, Northwestern University, and the University of Illinois at Chicago are classified as highest research doctoral universities. Chicago hasprofessional sports teams in each of the major professional leagues, including two Major League Baseball teams.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | McGivern's East Side (#412)
[Latest Airdate: September 6, 2018]
[Original Airdate: April 9, 2015]
“You can’t go back.” Really? John did – and loved every minute rediscovering the East Side of Milwaukee neighborhood in which he grew up. And in our attempt to find the locations of some of John’s most cherished childhood memories, we found some really great new places, too.
He couldn’t wait to walk us through his paper route. Lisa’s Pizza is still there, and still great. The pharmacy isn’t, but Clark Graphics is. And even though a lot of the businesses on Oakland have changed, John still gets the same “at home” feeling when he walks that street.
The parks he remembers are, thankfully, still there. Lake Park is still gorgeous, and now John can actually walk on the lawn bowling green without being chased off by the park attendant! Riverside Park, however, has changed because apparently there’s a whole hill missing. Our long, hot search for the infamous “suicide hill” that scarred John forever was fruitless!
This beloved Milwaukee neighborhood inspired the most nostalgic week we’ve ever spent with John. And perhaps one of the longest. Everywhere we went we had to listen to John’s childhood stories. And believe us, he has a really long memory! (Which we love, by the way :) )

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | The John Gurda Hour (#414)
[Original Airdate: April 23, 2015]
In our final episode of the season, it’s all about history and John Gurda - for an hour! During this season’s travels, John identified seven topics that he wanted to explore more fully: The Wade House (Greenbush), lannon stone (from Lannon – surprise!) and brownstone (Bayfield), Grant Park (South Milwaukee), the North Point Lighthouse (Milwaukee’s Lake Park), Great Lakes ship building (Sturgeon Bay) and the East Troy Electric Railroad (we don’t really have to tell you where this one is, right?).
In our regular community episodes of Around the Corner with John McGivern, we ask John Gurda to give us a three-minute version of the community’s history. Yep, three minutes. Well, for history buffs or nostalgic types, it’s just not enough time, right? So sit back and enjoy an hour of John Gurda relating what was by showing what is still here.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | Baraboo (#510)
[Latest Airdate: November 24, 2016]
[Original Airdate: March 31, 2016]
Baraboo isn't clowning around when it comes to fun things to do. Well it is, but in the best possible way. It's easy to say the circus heritage and present celebration of everything the Ringlings built are the heart of this town. But in Baraboo, the greatest show is actually the community that thrives here.
Do you know what Sysco does? Unless you own a restaurant, we bet you don't. Can't find that out of print book that you've always wanted? We know where you can get it. Do you think you already own every kitchen gadget? Bekah Kate can sell you tons of stuff you don't have. Ever been to a casino that will teach you how to win at Blackjack? Then you need to go to Ho-Chunk University. Have you enjoyed the best caramel apple crumble pie in the world? Since John made it himself at Log Cabin, we're pretty sure you haven't.
Ladies and gentlemen and children of all ages can do all that AND enjoy the Greatest Show on Earth in Baraboo. As Singing Ringmaster Dave Salutos says, this is a place where you can be 14 again. Finally! A place where John can really be himself!
