The ancient fishing port (they fished cod in the fifteenth century and went whale hunting to Newfoundland) with its newly refurbished private fish market, and its colorful boats, is a big part of the Luzien heritage, and is animated by its boat trips.
We fish for anchovy, for tuna and for hake. A real economy for the Basque Country, with active wholesale fish merchants and regular trawlers on the open sea. The fishing industry assures more than 600 jobs here. A strategic and dynamic point for the city, between history and economic modernity.
About 10 000 tons of fish and a hundred different species are fished and sold at the fish market of Saint-Jean-de-Luz / Ciboure each year which puts this market in 6th place out of 36 in France.
It is a small-scale fishing that is practiced on a small boat with lines and hooks that focuses on qualitative rather than quantitative selection. You can buy hake at the fishmongers under the covered market of Saint-Jean-de-Luz which is open daily.

What is hotel barging?
Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.
This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.
Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. Biarritz, an elegant seaside town on southwestern France’s Basque coast, has been a popular resort since European royalty began visiting in the 1800s. It’s also a major surfing destination, with long sandy beaches and surf schools. A symbol of Biarritz, the Rocher de la Vierge is a rocky outcrop topped with a statue of the Virgin Mary. Reached via footbridge, it offers sweeping views of the Bay of Biscay.
Half ritzy coastal resort, half summer surfer's hang-out, the seaside resort of Biarritz has been a favourite seaside getaway ever since Napoléon III and his Spanish-born wife Eugénie arrived during the mid-19th century. It's been a glamorous spot ever since, lined with elegant villas and heritage-listed residences that glitter with belle époque and art deco details. Unfortunately the 20th century wasn't quite so kind, and the seafront is blessed with its fair share of concrete carbuncles that have done little to enhance its aesthetic appeal. Nevertheless, Biarritz remains one of the southwest's seaside gems – so long as you can cope with the summer crowds and seasonal prices, that is.
Biarritz is a famous holiday destination located in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques département of Aquitaine, France. Biarritz lies on the Bay of Biscay, on the Atlantic coast, in southwestern France. It is adjacent to Bayonne and Anglet and 11 miles (18 km) from the border with Spain. Biarritz is very pedestrianised, and it is easy to get around the town centre, to the beaches, and to the best spots for surfing or shopping. This means whatever your holiday needs is a short and pleasant walking distance away. However, it can be quite hilly in places.
Biarritz is famous for its coast and the rocks in the sea. There is the church of Sainte Eugenie, a Russian Orthodox church, and the Museum of the Sea (entrance about €6) with a lot of interesting animals like different kinds of fish, anemones, sharks, and seals in aquariums. Other topics include fishing in the last centuries, birds, catching whales. Then there is a Museum of Asian Art and a lighthouse (entrance €2).
The beaches are excellent and this is a major surf resort. The main beach, Grand Plage, gets very crowded, but there is also a long surfers' beach on the Boulevard du Prince de Galles, called Cote de Basque, that has almost no sand at high tide, but is superb at low tide. The surf beaches at Anglet are easily accessible by bus, and surfboards that aren't too big are allowed on the local buses in the summer at least. There is a small beach by the Esplanade du Porte Vieux that is good for swimming when the surfer's beach is closed.

Garden of Eden and Magical Castle | Day 2 of Camino del Norte
It was the first complete Day of our Camino when we did around 17 kms and walked through the village Saint Jean de Luz, Ciboure and Sokoa and got to the outskirts of the French border city Hendaye. This day we already felt better and more energized not in our best physical state but much better than yesterday. There's also the fact of adjustment to the walking routine when your body needs time to get into the rythm, normally it takes several days for us. So we woke up fresh and ready to hit the trail. The whole day the trail was quite easy partly on the pavement partly on the gravel. It was Sunday so we were conscious about all the shops closing after midday and still were a bit late. But luckily in the city Saint Jean de Luz we found one little supermarket and we were not left starving in the evening. Saint Jean de Luz was a quite major village with lots of commercials and hotels, it even had a Grand Hotel. And starting from Saint Jean de Luz we had to walk the good 5 km along the highway. It was quite busy car road but it was on the side of it so it could be worse. And the views were compensating it all. It was finally the day when we could enjoy the rocky cliffs and walk almost on the edge of them, see lots of sea birds and enjoy proximity of the ocean all the way through. That's what you would expect from Camino del Norte and we were starting to fall in love with it from now on. After been walking along the car road we plunged into the foresty area which was full of oak and fruit trees, singing birds and squirrels. It felt like an oasis after been walking in the hot sun shining in the face without a shadow all day long. There we even found a castle that seemed like it came out of a Disney movie or some fairytale that's how you would imagine the castle as a child I guess. The second day around we met no pilgrims and we expect to find more of them the next day when we'll start walking from Irun where the official Camino del Norte starts. And so at the end of our day at the outskirts of Hendaye we found our 2 star camping site GCU and were happy to find a place to rest and gather the powers for the next day.

A Walk Around Plage du Miramar, Biarritz, France
This beautiful beach is a place to relax and enjoy the refreshing seaside breezes. Extending from the Hôtel du Palais to the Pointe Saint-Martin, the Plage du Miramar is distinguished by its spectacular scenery and dramatic shore-breaking waves. Although the sheltered beach offers a sense of tranquility, rough seas and strong currents (including riptides) make swimming dangerous. The condition of the waves and currents should be considered before entering the water.
The beach attracts sunbathers and spa-goers, who frequent the nearby Thalassa Sea & Spa center. Miramar Beach is less touristy than the Grande Plage and has the charm of an old-fashioned seaside resort—especially in summertime when vintage-style, striped beach tents make their appearance. Lifeguards are on duty in July and August.
Just off the coast is a huge rock, the Roche Ronde, a protected nature area and bird sanctuary.
