This is the 5th instalment of Archimarathon Spain + Portugal series - Portugal North. Days 7 and 8 of 14.
The city of Porto is the home of Alvaro Siza Viera, Eduardo Souto de Moura and the influential Porto Architecture School. The city is full of architectural gems from these Portuguese masters as well as OMA’s Casa da Musica. We also explored the Old Town, ate like royalties and squeezed in some port wine tasting as well.

Obra do arquitecto Siza Vieira, localizada no Porto, no perímetro da Rua da Boavista e a da Rua das Águas Férreas , muito perto da Estação de Metro da Lapa.
Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira nasceu em Matosinhos em 1933.
Estudou Arquitectura na Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto entre 1949 e 1955, sendo a sua primeira obra construída em 1954.
Ensinou na ESBAP entre 1966 e 1969; reingressou em 1976 como Professor Assistente de “Construção”.
Foi Professor Visitante na Escola Politécnica de Lausanne, na Universidade de Pensilvânia, na Escola de Los Andes em Bogotá, na Graduate School of Design of Harvard University como “Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor”; leccionou na Faculdade de Arquitectura do Porto.
Exerce a profissão na cidade do Porto.
Recebeu numerosos Prémios, nomeadamente: em 1988, a Medalha de Ouro da Fundação Alvar Aalto, o Prémio Prince of Wales da Harvard University e o Prémio Europeu de Arquitectura da Comissão das Comunidades Europeias/Fundação Mies Van der Rohe. Em 1992 foi-lhe atribuído o Prémio Pritzker da Fundação Hyatt de Chicago pelo conjunto da sua obra. Em 1998, o Praemium Imperiale pela Japan Art Association, de Tóquio. Em 2001, recebe o Prémio pela Wolf Foundation em Israel. Em 2002, recebe o Leão de Ouro em Veneza (melhor projecto) pela Bienal de Veneza e o Prémio Vitruvio 2002 pelo Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires.
É membro da American Institute of Arts and Science e “Honorary Fellow” do Royal Institute of British Architects.
Foi doutorado “Honoris Causa” por: Universidade Politécnica de Valência, Escola Politécnica Federal de Lausanne, Universidade de Palermo, Universidade Menendez Pelayo, Universidade Nacional de Engenharia de Lima, Universidade Coimbra e pela Universidade Lusíada.

OPEN HOUSE PORTO’s third year in a row, this time exclusively organized by Casa da Arquitectura. Two days devoted to architecture with visits open to everyone, in three cities – Porto, Matosinhos and Gaia.
To see the city and its guts, what is outside and what is inside its walls is what OPEN HOUSE proposes, and it was a surprising and memorable experience that we mean to give continuity to.
With open doors and with guided tours by specialists, by the authors themselves and by the team of volunteers, to stroll from building to building, during one weekend.

Do You Know the 7 Places in PORTO That Inspired HARRY POTTER?
Check out the 7 places in Porto, Portugal, that inspired J.K. Rowling while writing the Harry Potter Books! How many of these did you know, Potterhead?

Hey guys and welcome back to another episode of Triple P with me Surya Sridhar. So as some of you may know Im a Potterhead and that basically means I love Harry Potter. I grew up with it! I read all the books, I watched all the movies, had Harry Potter board games at home and recently I went to London to check out the Harry Potter shop and of course Platform 9 and 3/4. So guys there is only one thing left for me to do. To go to Porto! And you might ask: Why Porto? What’s here? Now as some of you Potter Heads may know, JK Rowling lived in Porto for 2-3 years teaching English, and thats where she wrote the first draft of the Philosophers Stone. She of course got a lot of inspiration from the city, and we’re going to be checking out 7 of the places. So are you guys ready? Cause I am. Let’s go!
Number 1: Livraria Lello
The Livraria Lello is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. You’ll be stunned by the woodwork, the glass art, and its most important feature: the red winding staircase. Many Potterheads believe that it actually inspired the incredible Hogwarts moving staircases as well as the interior decorations of the Diagon Alley premium bookstore called: Flourish and Blotts. You’ll be shocked to know that I stood in a queue for over 45 minutes and paid 3 Euros to get into this bookstore, but trust me, it was worth it!
Number 2: Escovaria de Belomonte
In Harry Potter, do you remember the scene where he's walking through Diagon Alley ogling at the beautiful Nimbus 2000? These magical brooms and the ones at the Brushes of Belomonte have a striking resemblance, especially since they are made by hand, are of high quality woods and natural fibres and have a rustic look to them. Also you may have noticed the similarities in the font used on the stores sign to the one used in the Harry Potter branding! Cool eh?
Number 3: Universidade do Porto
Now guys you remember the outfit at Hogwarts don't you? Incase you forgot, you can just head on over to the University of Porto to check it out. Yup you heard me right. The students also have a similar outfit: a white button down shirt, a tie, a sweater, dark trousers or skirts and of course a full length cape! If the Hogwarts Express came chugging by, they would just need to jump on, and they’d blend right in!
Number 4: Cafe Majestic
Now legend has it that JK Rowling frequently visited Cafe Majestic on Rua de Santa Catarina, which isn't surprising as it was a popular place for intellectuals and literary giants. It is said that she would jot down notes on the napkins when she got an inspiration for her first book Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. I was so struck by the stunning Art Nouveau design of the place, that I decided to treat myself to a yummy French Toast and soak in the ambience.
Number 5: Fonte dos Leões
Theres no doubt that Gryffindor has a special place in our hearts, especially since the main characters are from this house. It is speculated that the Fountain of Lions in Porto inspired JK Rowling to think of this beautiful emblem that symbolises courage and bravery. The interesting thing is that the lions aren't just normal ones - they have majestic wings - resembling the mythical griffin, hence: Gryffindor.
Number 6: Torre dos Clerigos
No doubt that one of the most emotional moments in Harry Potter was the death of Albus Dumbledore, the beloved headmaster. The scene shows him falling from the Astronomy Tower, the highest point in Hogwarts. It is said that this was inspired by the 76 meter high Clerigos Tower which for a long time was the highest building in all of Portugal. After climbing its 240 stone spiral staircases, I finally made it to the top to check out the breath taking panoramic scenery. Seriously, it really did remind me of the Astronomy Tower in Hogwarts!
Number 7: António de Oliveira Salazar
Now some of you may not know this but Antonio de Oliveira Salazar was the prime minister of Portugal from 1932 to 1968 and was known to be a dictator with a strong sense of censorship. It is very much possible that it inspired the antagonistic Slytherin house and its founding father: Salazar Slytherin, who was a Parselmouth and one who believed in blood purity. What do you guys think?

Student Urban Design Proposal - Massarelos, Porto
Strategy:
In the Massarelos area in Porto, Portugal, our urban design team proposes an expansion and regeneration of the University of Porto, that will concurrently strive to knit the surrounding fragmented neighbourhoods. The proposals for the university will encourage public engagement.
We aim to achieve this by creating a coherent and cohesive route of engagement from the top of Rua Panoramica Edgar Cardoso, right down to the waterfronts seawall.
Proposal:
Gateway to New Route:
- Built form and intensely treed areas define the new route
- Improve surfaces for pedestrians
- Create new cycleway with bikes to hire along parts of the route
- Make it a 'green thread' by enhancing the clusters of green along route
- Develop lighting for the route and special lighting for key spaces
U.Porto Aquatic Center (blue) :
(Precedent: Aquatic Center at Hillcrest, Vancouver, Canada - Part of Vancouver Olympic/Paralympic Centre)

- 50-meter lap pool
- Leisure pool
- Large hot tub

- Center for the Performing Arts
- Multi-use (It will be used as a performance space, but also as a central meeting place for students and the public alike. It will lend itself to the allotment space that lie in the same pocket of land, allowing the two to intercross, having farmers markets taking place in the amphitheatre space.)
- The most outstanding views towards the River Douro and the city of Porto can be gained from the steps of the new amphitheatre. Views that lie beyond the new active allotment space and the rich green foliage that lie directly infront.

- In the spirit of community integration, the new pedestrianised route runs through a housing complex that is currently closed off to the public. It's existing internal street allows for this change to take place.
