Kauaʻi - Hawaiʻi, USA
The oldest major island of the Hawaiian Island Chain, the five-million-year-old verdant Garden Isle of Kauaʻi is a place where earth & fire from extinct volcanoes have retired from bringing up the island from the depths of the ocean and now water & wind take their turn sculpting her with rugged beauty & majesty.

Swimming With The Hawaiian Fishes - Diving Kealakekua Bay Captain Cook Monument, Hawaii
Aloha Hui!
Today we mix it up a bit and get some diving done over at Kealakekua Bay, Hawaii. Aura was kind enough to invite me to go out on a diving sesh to the captain cook monument to get some nice looks at the Hawaiian fish and the beautiful ocean. Saw a few Invasive roi to, but the area is a no fishing zone so I guess they are going to need to hang out. It was an amazing diving and swimming sesh non the less and a beautiful day in the ocean of Hawaii.

Captain Cook Monument Hike Kealakekua Bay
We walk through everything you need to know about the hike down to the Captain Cook monument at Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island.
For directions you can Google Maps search 19.493,-155.918
Or, if you prefer actual directions, just south of the town of Kealakekua you will want to turn makai (towards the ocean) onto Napo'opo'o Rd. Just a few hundred feet down this road you will want to park on the mauka (towards the mountain) side of the road. Be sure to pull completely off of the road so you don't get sideswiped!
Trail description: the trail is approximately 1.8 miles long with an elevation loss of 1250 ft going down. Coming back up is a bit more strenuous, as you will be climbing, climbing, climbing. There are no difficult obstacles. The main thing you need to look out for is loose footing. Don't slip and hurt yourself or twist an ankle!
Once you get to the bottom of the trail, stay to the left till you see the monument to Captain James Cook.
This is an excellent spot for snorkeling! It is actually considered to be one of the best on the island!

Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park hike and Captain Cook snorkelling
On our vacation on the island of Hawaii, we hiked down to Kealakekua Bay from the trailhead on Nāpō'opo'o Road. A fairly difficult 2 mile trail through an overgrown field and over plenty of lava rock. If you go, make sure to take plenty of water. The snorkelling was great and we got up close with a sea turtle. Filmed with a GoPro Hero.

Ocean Cliff Jumping on Big Island of Hawaii with Bill Kyle and Sean
I don't know if the video properly conveys how high up you feel you are when looking at the ocean below. I'm not sure if I would have jumped if my three boys hadn't jumped before me. After doing it once, we did it many more times and after a few, the boys jumped together from various parts of the cliff face.
The cliff we are jumping off of has been eroded from below by wave action and all that is required to make a safe jump is to clear the face itself. You will notice me talking to my youngest, Sean, about jumping out further to properly clear the face of the cliff. Never jump from a cliff face that has a ledge of rock just below the surface that requires you to jump out far, because not clearing it would cause grave injury. On previous jumps, we swam below the cliff or waterfall to confirm the depth of the water and that there were no protruding rocks below the surface of the water at a depth that would be risky. This cliff face was ideal. Because it was eroded underneath, creating an ocean cave under the cliff, and because the depth of the water was about 30 feet, we could safely jump in at any area under the cliff surfaces we were jumping off of.
