Afternoon Trains on the NS Harrisburg and Reading Lines, June 18, 2010
After a good morning at Wyomissing, I headed out to the reading fairgrounds to see what I could see behind the Farmers' Market. Soon enough, freight 19G was heading down the main into Reading Yard, but I got a surprise when roadrailer train 262 got a clear to go up the passing track to west laurel, resulting in a wrong-side meet. The 262 is seen passing on the far side of 19G, and then 19G heading down the track.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

10-year-old donates time, money to local human
By: Lindsay Ward
FALLS CREEK, Pa. -- For Brockway Elementary School student Grace Preston, it's simple make animals happy. Over the past few years, the now 10-year-old has volunteered several hours at local animal shelters. In this week's Making a Difference, Lindsay Ward was shown the importance of the phrase: Do something.
She would rather get her hands dirty cleaning pet cages or ask for donations instead of receiving gifts on her birthday and she does it all with a smile on her face.
I wanted to teach her to be giving and not be selfish, said Sandy Preston, Grace's mom.
Sandy Preston said after reading an article in a local newspaper about a young girl volunteering at a hospital, she immediately thought Grace could do something similar, and after presenting this idea to her daughter, birthdays and animal shelters came to mind.
She just ran with it from there, said Sandy Preston. From every birthday since, she has asked people to bring things for the animal shelter to the point she doesn't even have to ask anymore. Her friends just know and they show up with bags of dog food.
The giving began two years ago when Grace was just 8 years old. And just like any young girl, Grace had big ideas.
While the donations were great, she wanted to do more.
And my mom said yes and she found a recipe and we started making homemade dog biscuits, said Grace.
In addition, they started making and selling all natural flea and tick repellent at local farmer's markets in the spring and summer. Sandy even created the Facebook page Grace's Goodies to generate more attention to her daughter's cause.
We've even gotten donations in the mail from someone who said 'I just saw your Facebook page and I wanted to help out,' said Sandy Preston. She got a $50 check from someone we've never met one time.
In 2013 I got like $1,000 and in 2014 I got like $2,000, said Grace.
All the money she's raised has gone to the Gateway Humane Society in Falls Creek.
It's very touching, said Carla Adamson, secretary of Gateway Humane Society. She's a sweet little girl.
Adamson said thanks to Grace's donations, they were able to purchase a much needed shed at the shelter.
We were in desperate need of extra storage, and we had enough money with her money, and a little extra that we could finally purchase a shed, said Adamson.
If you happen to see Grace either at the shelter or selling her biscuits, you'll more than likely see her wearing a T-shirt that says, Do Something. It's the title of a favorite song of hers one that she hopes will inspire others.
Telling you to like, do something and don't sit around and watch the world go by, said Grace.
Wise words from a 10-year-old that we all could use.
Gabriel, Farming the Woods
Forests can have both high environmental and financially remunerative value, yielding marketable products such as American ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, ramps (wild leeks), maple syrup, fruit and nut trees, ornamentals, and more. In a Chats in the Stacks book talk at Mann Library marking the 2015 Earth Day celebration, Steve Gabriel, author of Farming the Woods: An Integrated Permaculture Approach to Growing Food and Medicinals in Temperate Forests (Chelsea Green Publishing, 2014), highligts proven ways that forest owners and stewards can successfully cultivate, harvest, and market high-value non-timber forest crops. Providing an in-depth guide on productive ways to manage an established woodland, Farming the Woods is a must-read for farmers and gardeners interested in incorporating aspects of agroforestry, permaculture, forest gardening, and sustainable woodlot management into the concept of a whole-farm organism.
The book is co-authored by Ken Mudge (Emeritus Professor of Horticulture, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences). Gabriel is agroforestry specialist for the Cornell Small Farms Program and farms mushrooms, maple syrup, and other forest products locally.
