St Melor Holywell, Mylor, nr Falmouth, Cornwall
A delightful surprise... A well dressing...(in Cornwall!!!). In the churchyard. Some doubt its antiquity because there's no mention of it anywhere but in the church guide. There are two St Mylors... One a celtic bishop, son of a duke in Brittany, who sailed to these parts around 400AD, using this well to baptise, the well then becoming a place of pilgrimage, with many cures attributed with it. The water is still used for baptisms. Or, St Melorus, son of Melianus, duke of Cornwall, who after the death of his father his uncle Regnaldus, who then became regent, being pagan pressurised Melorus to denounce his faith, he refused and was dismembered on the 28th August, 411AD. Said to be buried where the church now is, a stone monolith beside the porch marking his tomb. Though it is also said his relics were claimed by Amesbury abbey. Hagiographers have confused names, dates and places almost irretrievably. Could write more but even I'm getting confused. The Celtic cross out side the porch is the tallest in the county.

Commandos Training in Cornwall in World War Two
Using wartime film clips and photographs this video looks at some of the locations in Cornwall that were used to train the Commandos during World War Two.
We start with some clips from the 1945 film Commando - the Story of the Green Beret that show the troops arriving at Spean Bridge and Achnacarry for training in the Highlands of Scotland.
The action then shifts to St Ives where we see them in the harbour with a range of craft, and landing on and climbing the cliffs on the north Cornish coast nearby.
There is also a clip which shows the fate of the Hor Point Chain Home Low radar station due to some well placed satchel bombs.
We then view some photographs of beach landings and cliff climbing. We see the instructors and a range of different commando troops, including Polish, at Bosigran.
We then move up the north Cornish coast to the Camel Estuary at Padstow where William Henry Merryweather of 12 Commando describes his training in a two man canoe as part of the Special Boat Section.
We return to cliff assaults with a short 1943 film called Rough Weather Landing which features 4 Commando attacking mine workings at Bosigran by landing and assailing the cliffs.
Finally we see the plaque on Smeaton's Pier in St Ives and visit the grave of one Commando who lies in Illogan Churchyard.
If you can add any detail to what's presented, perhaps because a family member served in or hosted the Commando while they were in Cornwall, then please leave a comment.
The film clips come from wartime films which were Crown Copyright but on which it is believed the copyright has expired. The wartime photographs come from the Commando Veterans Association, the Imperial War Museum, and the Cheesewring & South-East Cornwall Climbing Guide. Music credits are also given at the end of the video.
This video has been made to honour and remember those who served and those who died to secure the freedom we enjoy today.
For a great wartime adventure story set in Cornwall in the summer of 1940 find my novel No Small Stir on eBay or Amazon or order from your local bookshop.
Thanks for reading and for watching.
