Solo Bike-Packing False Cape State Park, Virginia (3 Days/2 Nights)
False Cape State Park is Virginia's most remote state park. This isolated park is bordered on the north by the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Back Bay on the west, and the state of North Carolina on the south. There is no public vehicle access to False Cape State Park...you can only get there by hiking, biking, or boating. Most visitors hike or bike in from the north, passing through about 5 miles of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge, with its own restrictive rules for visitation. The park and refuge are one of the last remaining and largest areas of undeveloped coastal shoreline anywhere in the eastern United States. False Cape is a challenging place to visit but unique and rewarding.
This is my second visit to False Cape. On this trip, I leave my vehicle at Sandbridge Beach, Virginia, and bike a short distance south to the entrance of the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This time of year, most of the interior trails are closed, so for most of the 5 miles through the refuge, I biked down the beach. I timed my arrival to coincide with low tide to facilitate this leg of the journey. Even after entering the state park, I decided to continue on the beach a few additional miles south to arrive to False Cape Landing, the section of the park where I would be camping. Due to unsettled and unpredictable weather, I decided to head straight to camp and get my base set up. Afterwards I still had a little time to explore, including taking in a nice sunset on the Back Bay. Day 2 saw on and off rain, with some heavy showers in the afternoon. The rain did not stop the fun. I spent the morning biking around the northwest corner of the state park, and after lunch I took in some rainy hiking in the Wash Woods section. My last day in the park saw some improved weather, I did a short hike to the Back Bay and also a bushwhack to a hidden pond not found along any trails or maps, all while making my way out of the park as I headed north back towards Sandbridge.

The Outer Banks (also known as OBX) is a 200-mile (320-km) long string of narrow barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, beginning in the southeastern corner of Virginia Beach on the east coast of the United States. They cover approximately half the northern North Carolina coastline, separating the Currituck Sound, Albemarle Sound, and Pamlico Sound from the Atlantic Ocean.
The Outer Banks is a major tourist destination and is known for its temperate climate and wide expanse of open beachfront. The Cape Hatteras National Seashore has four campgrounds where visitors may camp.
The Wright brothers' first flight in a powered, heavier-than-air vehicle took place on the Outer Banks on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near the seafront town of Kitty Hawk. The Wright Brothers National Monument commemorates the historic flights, and First Flight Airport is a small, general-aviation airfield located there.
The English Roanoke Colony—where the first person of English descent, Virginia Dare, was born on American soil—vanished from Roanoke Island in 1587. The Lost Colony, written and performed to commemorate the original colonists, is the longest running outdoor drama in the United States and its theater acts as a cultural focal point for much of the Outer Banks.
The treacherous seas off the Outer Banks and the large number of shipwrecks that have occurred there have given these seas the nickname Graveyard of the Atlantic. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum is located in Hatteras Village near the United States Coast Guard facility and Hatteras ferry.

Sandbridge, in the U.S. state of Virginia, is a coastal community of Virginia Beach, located along the coastline on the Currituck Banks Peninsula at the northern end of the Outer Banks. The Atlantic Ocean is to the east, the Back Bay of the Currituck Sound is to the west, and the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park lie to the south. To the north, Sandbridge borders the U.S. Navy's Dam Neck facility. Located near the southern end of Sandbridge is Little Island Park,[1] which is managed by the City of Virginia Beach. Sandbridge Beach runs approximately 4.5 miles (7.2 kilometres) from north to south along the oceanfront.

Feral pigs going hog wild in Hampton Roads
VIRGINIA BEACH -- This little piggy went to the market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy escaped its owners, turned feral and made its home right here in Hampton Roads.
Wildlife bilogists are in the midst of a battle with feral hogs. They're trying to eliminate them in Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and at False Cape State Park.
Experts consider them an invasive species that, if not eliminated, could cause you big problems.
Right now, the pigs are confined to the refuge and park, where they continuously tear up marsh land established to protect waterfowl like the American Black Duck, Tundra Swan, Glossy Ibis and many other shore birds.
On a recent visit to Back Bay to learn about efforts to control and even eliminate the feral hog population, there was clear evidence of the pigs.
That's the pig droppings right there. Yeah, and that's from yesterday, explains Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge biologist John Gallegos.
He's working closely with state biologists to stay on the leading edge of the Commonwealth's wild hog problem.
A problem Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries biologist Peter Acker says is a growing issue in many southern states.
They have gotten inudated with hogs and now it's beyond any control. So, we're trying to cut this off before it starts and before it becomes a big issue because when they do get established, they're very hard to get rid of, he says.
One method of getting rid of the hogs is through trapping and humane euthanization. On the refuge and at the state park, biologists have set up about a dozen traps baited with corn.
They also have a number of trail cameras set up to watch the pigs.
Once we determine that this regular pig activity is occuring at a location the waterfowl are depending upon for foods, we set up a trail camera and this trail camera essentially provides us with a frequency of use by the feral hogs. When are they here -- what time of day or night are they here -- that allows us to figure out when we should set up our traps or our control activities to keep this damage from happening, explains Gallegos
Pigs aren't making their homes just in Hampton Roads.
We do have three established populations -- one in Southwestern Virginia, one in Culpepper and Orange counties and one here at Back Bay and False Cape, Acker notes. Each established population would be somewhere in the range of, this one might be the smallest, in the 20 to 50 size. Central Virginia probably has several hundred.
It's the numbers that concern them. The animals have a proclivity to procreate and with food plentiful this season, population control efforts are not optional.
If we weren't doing any control activity at all with them, then the poplulation would rapidly explode, says Gallegos.
Acker adds They procreate like crazy. They can reproduce early, at less than a year old. They can have several litters a year of four to six to eight piglets each litter.
The damage and disease they can spread, if the population grows out of control, could be catasrophic, not only to the habitat at the refuge and state park but also to local farmers and the pork industry.
Visualize a pig turning over the ground in a farmer's soy bean field or a corn field. It would be a disaster for that farmer, says Gallegos.
Acker says the pigs carry troublesome diseases that could drastically, drastically impact the pork industry in this state if a couple of them made their way into the herds of pigs on farms -- it would be a huge impact.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, feral swine have been known to carry or transmit over 30 diseases and 37 parasites that can be transmitted to livestock, people, pets and wildlife.
They also dramatically alter habitat and hurt native species that a lot of people are concerned about, our agencies included, says Acker.
When the feral hogs attempt to eat the corn in the traps, they trip a taut string, which runs across the width of the cage, it brings a gate down, trapping them inside. The animals are then euthanized.
Each October, hog permits are available during deer season, but experts say hunting is not the preferred method of eliminating the pig population.
Hunters will kill a few here and there, but it's not a way that we can put a big dent in a population, says Acker.
How did these pigs became a problem in the first place?
A lot of the problem has come from accidental releases, but most of it has been due to people releasing pigs, on purpose, in order to establish a huntable population. And it's something, it's illegal, but also we really want to discourage it, because of all the damage they can do and because of how hard they are to get rid of, once they are established, Acker states.

US Coast Guard Suspends Search for Jewish Teacher Missing in Virginia Beach Waters
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended search efforts for a teacher who went missing after he tried to help a student reportedly struggling in a rip current south of Sandbridge.
The search to find the 35-year-old man began Tuesday afternoon. Coast Guard officials confirmed their search efforts around 11:25 a.m. Wednesday.
Joel Rubin, CEO of Rubin Communications Group, confirmed to media outlets Wednesday the man who went missing is Rabbi Reuven Bauman — who teachers 7th and 8th grade boys as well as 3rd Grade Judaic studies at Toras Chaim.
Virginia Beach police spokesperson Linda Kuehn says police received the call for a possible drowning at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.
Kuehn said there was a group of students and a teacher on the beach. The teacher noticed one of the students, a 13-year-old, was in trouble, so he went in the water to help. The student was able to get out, but the teacher has not been located.
Original reports from police indicated the 35-year-old teacher went missing at Sandbridge, Virginia Beach EMS spokesperson Bruce Nedelka later said the search was focused around False Cape.
In an update Wednesday, Nedelka said the area where the man went missing was two miles south of Little Island Park at the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s website, there is no swimming allowed on refuge’s beach.
Nedelka said one person was taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Emergency crews, including members of the Coast Guard, police and fire officials, responded to the area to search for the man. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and a 45-foot Response Boat from Coast Guard Station Little Creek are part of the search.
Red flags were flying at guarded areas of Sandbridge Beach at the time of the man’s disappearance, indicating dangerous water conditions.
