Spearfishing in Key West, Florida - A Rich Life
I have the good fortune of knowing one of the best charter boat captains in Key West, Florida. Captain Chris Mendola of Far Out Fishing Charters. In this video, I wanted to capture more than just spearfishing. I wanted to capture this life of being on the water, of spearfishing, freediving, and most importantly of spending this time with my friends and leaving behind the repetitiveness of our daily lives. I wanted to capture this rich life.

Kingfish, Cobia and Snappers - Offshore Fishing in Florida - 4K
I went offshore fishing in Cape Canaveral for Kingfish, Cobia and Red Snappers with Capt. Scott Lum and Corey Pagano from Tackle Crafters. We started the day off netting bait in the Port. Once we filled our live wells, we headed offshore and started fishing for kingfish. After catching half a dozen kings, we moved inshore to a shallow wreck to go fishing for red snappers and cobia.

Monster Grouper Spinning Tackle Fishing Challenge:
Sportsman's Adventures: Rodney Wrecks Season 11 | Episode 12
On today’s Sportsman's Adventures, we travel to where the Upper and the Lower Florida Keys come together in Marathon. Like the rest of the Fabulous Florida Keys, this tropical island paradise is rich in history. It was here, 1oo years ago, that Henry Flagler’s railroad literally went to sea, spanning the vast blue waters with its seven mile bridge. The middle keys are also famous for the incredible variety of fishing possibilities. Just a boat ride away and you can be fishing the deep ocean reefs or trolling the clear, blue waters of the mighty Gulfstream. Fishermen from all over the world come to the Keys to fish with master guide, Capt Ralph Delph and on today’s adventure South Florida businessman Rodney Baretto joins Ralph for a trip to the Gulf of Mexico. The waters in the Gulf have become the final resting place for numerous ship wrecks and these wrecks host a huge variety gamefish.
Sportsman's Adventures is Florida's most popular fishing show, hosted by South Florida fishing guide and tournament professional Captain Rick Murphy. He shares his knowledge gained from a lifetime on the water with viewers.

A flash of gold in the depths is often the angler’s first sight. Dark fins indicate a blackfin tuna, not the similar—and potentially much larger—yellowfin. The species overlap in some waters off Florida.
Over the years, Florida Sportsman has covered the ins and outs of the blackfin tuna fishery around the Florida coastline: Places these fish are historically abundant, such as the famous Humps in the Florida Keys; the shrimp fleet in the Gulf of Mexico; bluewater ledges off Northeast Florida. We’ve researched baits that are productive—from live sardines to ballyhoo, small trolling plugs to streamer flies. We’ve covered the advent of fluorocarbon leader material, its low refractive index apparently conducive to fooling the sharp-eyed blackfins.
There are scattered records of blackfin tuna occurring as far north as Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, but the usual range is from North Carolina to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, including the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
The pectoral fins reach to somewhere between the twelfth dorsal spine and the origin of the second dorsal fin but they never extend beyond the second dorsal fin as in the albacore. There is a total of 19-25 (usually 21-23) gill rakers on the first arch (15-19 are on the lower limb), which is fewer than in any other species of Thunnus. The finlets are uniformly dark, without a touch of the bright lemon yellow usually present in those of other tunas. Light bars alternate with light spots on the lower flanks.
This is a pelagic, schooling fish that generally feeds near the surface. Its diet consists of small fishes, squid, crustaceans, and plankton. An excellent light tackle species, it can be taken by trolling or casting small baits or lures, including ballyhoo, mullet and other small fishes as well as strip baits, spoons, feathers, jigs, or plugs; or by live bait fishing from boats at the surface of deep waters one to two miles offshore. It has some local commercial importance, but is predominantly an angler's fish. It is a spunky game species and the flesh is of good quality and flavor
Florida Inshore Fishing - MULTI-Species Fishing Trip With MULTI-Baits!
What's going on folks! Here in Northwest Florida the weather has been extremely hectic lately. For about a week straight, we had showers and thunderstorms every single day. Luckily, me and Taylor had a free afternoon that looked decent as far as the weather goes. We got out to the spot and started catching live baits right off the bat. We ended up catching Croakers, Bull Minnows, Pinfish, and Menhaden. The weather was definitely not the best, but we stuck it out and managed to get some quality fish nonetheless! Enjoy the trip guys, and let me know if you have any questions or comments! Until next time, tight lines and #SetMandNetM!

Deep dropping for blackbelly rosefish
When nothing else is biting, catch these small, tasty fish on the bottom of the ocean in 800 feet
September 13, 2012|By Steve Waters, Sun Sentinel
There are days when all an offshore angler wants to do is to come home with some fish for dinner.
But what's that angler to do when tasty species such as dolphin, cobia, tuna, snapper and grouper aren't biting?
That's when it's time to go deep for blackbelly rosefish.
For Capt. Mario Cote´and his son Capt. Kevin Cote´, who offer charter fishing trips out of Port Everglades Inlet on No Vacansea, deep dropping is almost always a sure way to guarantee fresh fish for the table.
Two weeks ago the two men, of Hollywood, had run more than a dozen miles offshore in search of dolphin, but the colorful fish were just not around. There were no weedlines or pieces of floating debris, which attract baitfish that attract dolphin. And the only birds they saw also were looking for fish.
Wanting to provide something for their guest to bring home, and since they were already out pretty far, they decided to stop in 800 feet off Hollywood on the way in and do some deep dropping.
While Mario used the boat's GPS unit to call up productive spots, Kevin set up their electric fishing outfit.
He clipped on a leader with five circle hooks and baited each with a piece of squid. Then he clipped a heavy, cylindrical lead weight to the end of the leader to get the baits to the bottom.
Soon after the weight touched down, the tip of the bent-butt rod, which Kevin left in the rod-holder, twitched a couple of times. He slowly cranked up some of the 80-pound braided line to entice a few more fish to bite, then hit the switch to turn on the reel and let it bring up the fish the rest of the way.
When the leader hit the rod tip, Kevin turned off the reel and lifted four blackbelly rosefish into the boat.
The bright reddish-orange fish don't get very big — 15 inches would be considered good-sized — but their firm, white fillets are delicious, something their guest confirmed a few days later when he called to say that the rosefish were the best fish he'd ever eaten.

Fishing for Atlantic Sailfish off Naples, Florida
Naples fishing charters best fun is with Capt. Zeke aboard Southern Viking Charters. These folks had lots of fun deep sea fishing in southwest Florida out of Gordon's Pass near Naples, FL. This day they caught Atlantic Sailfish, American red snapper, Goliath Grouper, Cobia, and Amberjack (AJ, or just Jack -- they look and fight like tuna)
.
Naples fishing charters are much more fun when you're on board with Capt. Zeke Schryver and his great crew. See his blog for more information at or just call him now at (239) 682-7286
Naples charter fishing is easier because Capt. Zeke docks his boats very near the ocean. You'll spend less time in Naples bay, and more time on the open water in the Gulf of Mexico.
Red snapper, Tarpon (also called Silver King), Atlantic sailfish, Snook, Black grouper, Yellowtail snapper and Lane snapper, King mackerel and Redfish -- they're all plentiful in the clear, blue waters around Naples and Marco Island in Southwest Florida. There are far too many kinds of fish you might find to name them all here.
You'll find plenty of modern, well-maintained rods, reels, lures, plenty of fresh bait, and all the deep sea fishing gear you need to have a great time catching fish. Capt. Zeke supplies absolutely everything you'll need, including cold drinks and snacks. If you go out for an all-day fishing trip, he'll supply a tasty lunch, too. Captain Zeke will take care of all the fishing licenses, and he's fully insured. All you have to do is pick a time you want to go fishing and show up at the dock and climb aboard his fully-equipped boat -- it's just a few minutes south of downtown Naples. There's a handy map on the website.
If you prefer a saltwater fishing trip that's a little slower and easier than deep sea fishing, there are plenty of big fish you can catch in the thousands of shallow channels around Marco Island and the 10,000 Islands area (we call it backwater fishing). Fishing near the shore is popular too, and the varieties of fish there are plentiful and tasty.
At the end of your day of fun catching fish, the Captain and his crew will be glad to clean and prep your fish for you at no charge.
Capt. Zeke is a second-generation fishing charter captain and fishing guide; he's lived his entire life (fishing) in Naples, and he really knows his way around. He takes great pride in having his all of his boating and fishing equipment always well-maintained and ready for action.
Whether your favorite fishing is going after the big trophy fish, the joy of landing a big catch and release fish, or bringing back lots of tasty fish for everyone to enjoy for a fresh fish dinner, for Naples fishing charters, Zeke Schryver is one of the finest Captains around Naples and Marco Island. Call (239) 682-7286 now to schedule your next Naples fishing charter.
Key West: Island Adventure
Island Adventure Tour in Key West. We have been to many paradise places on this trip so far and this is one of the best. From the boat we walked out to this spot and enjoyed the sunshine, the nice temperature in the water, a few beers, paddle boarding and canoeing. It rarely does get any better than that when doing a boat tour. Key West is absolutely amazing.

Riding the Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad
Henry Flagler's Florida Keys Over-Sea Railroad ceased operations in 1935, but two Keys women vividly remember childhood experiences riding the railroad that went to sea. More information on the centennial anniversary of the railroad's completion is at fla-keys.com or flaglerkeys100.com
Completed in 1912, it was called the Over-Sea Railroad because its track stretched more than 100 miles out into open water. For 23 years it carried passengers from mainland Florida to and through the Keys, affording them a breathtaking sense of steaming across the ocean.
Minnie Dameron, who spent much of her childhood on Plantation Key in the Upper Keys, remembers trips to visit family in Key West — and taking the train's final journey just before portions of its track were irreparably damaged in a 1935 hurricane. Marie Gasser, who passed Jan. 10, 2012, spent childhood summers in Ohio and winters in Miami, recalls her family's one-way train trip from Miami to Key West.
Dameron remembered her father flagging down the train at the Plantation Key freight station with a white handkerchief, and a lantern signaling the family had boarded.
We'd get so excited when we knew we were coming to get the train and go all the way to Key West — we put on our best clothes, said Dameron, 86, who now lives in Key West.
My sister and I used to love to ride the train and look out the window, she recalled. But when we'd come to the Seven Mile Bridge, it looked like you were riding on the water, so we'd get scared and hold one another's hand.
For Dameron, arriving at Key West was the trip's highlight. On special occasions, she remembered, Cuban bands and dancers greeted arriving passengers.
About three months before she died, Gasser recalled her family boarding the train in Miami when she was 5 and walking back to the last seat, which resembled a church pew. Her mother sat by the window and her father on the aisle, while she rode between them.
Everybody was excited — take a train down to Key West, said Gasser.
During the journey, they walked to the dining car.
It seemed like a long ways to get to something to eat, said Gasser, who remembered a waiter in a white shirt and black pants helping her. He brought a highchair for me, lifted me up and put me in the highchair.
The journey was pleasant, she said, until her mother looked out the open window as the train crossed a bridge so narrow it seemed she was sitting over water. After arriving in Key West, her mother refused to take the train back to Miami and insisted they return by boat.
She said boats were made to go on water and trains were not! Gasser chuckled.
Dameron and her family's last ride was the train's final journey to Key West just before the Labor Day 1935 hurricane that slammed into the Upper Keys, damaging that area's railroad line. The trip wasn't inspired by foreknowledge of the storm, but instead to get treatment for her sick sister.
She had a temperature and my mother tried everything to get it down and couldn't, so we got the train to Key West, Dameron said. We would have been in it (the hurricane), but I was on the last train in here (Key West) because of my sister being ill.
Three years after the hurricane, the Overseas Highway debuted, built on a foundation that incorporated most of the original railway spans. Today, it contains 127 miles of roadway and 42 bridges over water connecting the Keys. The original train bridges were retired in 1982, but many became fishing piers.
A celebration commemorating the 100th anniversary of the railway's completion is to culminate Jan. 14-23, with Keyswide events marking the centennial of the first train's journey.
It changed the Keys forever, and what a blessing it was, said Dameron. I just wish it was still there — that's how much we loved it.

The Key West Express is the best way to travel to Key West. You could drive. You could fly. You could take a boat. But... unless you live in South Florida, the drive can be long and tiresome. Flying can be quick, but Key West isn't exactly a top aviation hub. Getting flights to and from Key West can be expensive and there's always a layover some place. Boating to Key West sounds nice but you don't know anyone with a boat and wouldn't it take a long time? Prepare to raise anchor, because I'm about to tell you the best way to get to Key West...and it's by boat.
If you've been reading this blog for any amount of time you know I'm a big fan of the Key West Express. The Key West Express is the high speed ferry boat that travels between Fort Myers and Key West Florida. They also leave out of Marco Island Florida. The boat pulls out of port around 8:30am and ties up in Key West around 11am. A fun 3 1/2 hours later and you're walking down Duval looking for a cold rum drink.

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!
Cheers!
GIANT JEWFISH OR GOLIATH GROUPER
GIANT 400 POUND GOLIATH GROUPER OR JEWFISH. This is a video of a Giant Goliath Grouper or Jewfish from the Dry Tortugas. Not many people venture this far offshore from Key West, but I come out here in my Boston Whaler 305 Conquest and spend a week at a time catching giant fish. I prowl the waters off Key West on the RED WHALE my 305 Boston Whaler 305 Conquest with T-250 Verado outboards. We are in search of Giant Amberjack, Mahi-Mahi, Blackfin Tuna and more!
