Fastnet Rock

Fastnet Rock, or simply Fastnet (possibly from Old Norse Hvasstann-ey, meaning 'sharp-tooth isle'; called Carraig Aonair, meaning lonely rock, in Irish) is a small islet in the Atlantic Ocean and the most southerly point of Ireland. It lies 6.5 kilometres (4.0 mi) southwest of Cape Clear Island and 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) from County Cork on the Irish mainland. Due to its location, Fastnet is known as Ireland's Teardrop, because it was the last part of Ireland that 19th century Irish emigrants saw as they sailed to North America.
Fastnet Rock is a small clay-slate islet with quartz veins. It rises to about 30 metres (98 ft) above low water mark and is separated from the much smaller southern Little Fastnet by a 10 metres (33 ft) wide channel. Fastnet also gives its name to the sea area used by the Shipping Forecasts on BBC's Radio 4. The current lighthouse is the second to be built on the rock and is the highest in Ireland.
Fastnet Rock is used as the midpoint of one of the world's classic offshore yachting races, the Fastnet Race, a 1,126 kilometres (700 mi) round trip from Cowes on the Isle of Wight, round the rock and back to Plymouth. It is also sometimes used as a mark for yacht races from local sailing centres such as Schull, Baltimore, and Crookhaven.

Mizen Head Lighthouse

Mizen Head, is located at the extremity of the Mizen Peninsula in County Cork, in southwest Ireland. It is one of the extreme points of the island of Ireland and is a major tourist attraction, noted for its dramatic cliff scenery. One of the main transatlantic shipping routes passes close by to the south, and Mizen Head was, for many seafarers, the first (or last) sight of Europe. The tip of the peninsula is almost an island, cut off by a deep chasm, now spanned by a bridge; this gives access to an old signal station, a weather station, and a lighthouse. The signal station, once permanently manned, is now a museum housing displays relating to the site's strategic significance for transatlantic shipping and communications, including the pioneering efforts of Guglielmo Marconi. The 99 steps which formed part of the original access route have been supplemented by a series of paths and viewing platforms, and a full range of visitor facilities is available at the entrance to the site. The villages of Ballydehob, Crookhaven, Goleen, and Schull are located on the peninsula to the east.
Mizen Head is not the most southerly point on the mainland of Ireland; nearby Brow Head holds that title, as several metres south. Nevertheless, geography books have long measured the length of Ireland, diagonal northeast-to-southwest, as from Fair Head to Mizen Head or north-south from Malin Head to Mizen Head.

Sailing: Schull to Fastnet Rock, in June 2007, returning to Baltimore. This was in a fast racing yacht, so we enjoyed the speed on a beautiful day with ideal sailing conditions. Fastnet lighthouse biult in early 20th C, replacing the previous 19th C lighthouse.

Myself, my brother Gavin & our friend Pat Fitz picked a boat up in Kinsale to go and get a good look at The Fastnet Rock, the southern most tip of Ireland. We docked in Baltimore, Co. Cork the first night & set sail for the Rock at first light after a great night in Jacob's in Baltimore. We had favorable winds the entire way. Winds reached 32knts & the waves rose to 7-10ft once we passed the tip of Cape Clear. The seas were angry as there are currents coming from both sides of Cape Clear which resulted in waves coming at 2 different angles. We had trouble with our reefing lines but we got them sorted in time to put in a 3rd reef as we got closer to The Rock. We did not actually do a full loop of the Rock as I felt the wind was blowing too hard to risk sailing to the windward side of her. I gave her the respect she richly deserves.

It's no wonder they call West Cork “A Place Apart”. Nature sets the pace in this beautiful south west corner of Ireland, stretching from the south-coast of Kinsale to three rugged westerly peninsulas reaching into the wild Atlantic: Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head and Beara.
West Cork is the place many head for, leaving city lives behind to play along the long zig-zagging coastline, and walk or ride through peaceful inland woods and valleys. Hundreds of inlets, tiny coves, safe harbours and beaches are just right for long active days in the salty air.
There’s something restorative about the temperate climate and sub-tropical gardens, the tranquil lanes thick with fuchsia and montbretia, the sudden glimpses of water through the trees, the shifting light, and the soft greens, greys and violets of bays and distant mountains.
There’s edge-of-the-world drama too: climbing up to a mountain pass through ever-changing weather, crossing the bridge to the end of Mizen Head with the Atlantic crashing below, or taking the cable car to Dursey Island, one of over a hundred West Cork islands. Seven of these are inhabited, including Ireland’s most southerly community on Cape Clear “the storytellers’ island”, where Irish is spoken as a first language, and there’s an independent way of life.
Beyond Cape Clear, the imposing Fastnet Lighthouse stands on a rock known as Ireland’s tear drop, for emigrants to the new world, this was their last sight of their native land. The whole coast echoes with history, ancient sites, ruined castles, coastal forts, copper mines.
West Cork is both very Irish, and quite cosmopolitan, for many have ‘blown-in’ on the winds and stayed to make this beautiful place their home. There’s a strong creative community here.… It’s A Place Apart.
