David’s Been Here brings you Felix Romuliana in the town of Gamzigrad, Serbia. David takes us to the highlights of this amazing archaeological park and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The palace of Felix Romuliana was commissioned in the late third/ early fourth century by Emperor Caius Valerius Galerius Maximianus, or Emperor Galerius for short. He built it to commemorate his retirement from the throne and named it after his mother Romula. It is a sprawling compound spread across 10 acres.
The columns of the Imperial Palace are not completely original, but they were erected to give visitors an idea about how the atrium once looked. David also tours the remains of a temple dedicated to Jupiter, public bath complex, palace gates, and walls.
To see the artifacts excavated from Felix Romuliana, David suggests driving an extra 15 minutes to the Museum of Zaječar in the town by the same name. It holds an impressive collection of mosaics, statues including a bust of Emperor Galerius, Roman coins, and aerial photography of the site.

Consisting of a fortified palace and built on the orders of the Roman emperor Galère (at the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 4th century), the site houses a memorial of the mausoleums built for the emperor and his mother Romula.
The site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2007.

Gamzigrad (Гамзиград) - Felix Romuliana
Felix Romuliana to znajdujące się w niewielkiej miejscowości Gamzigrad (w pobliżu miasta Zajecar) ruiny starożytnego późno-rzymskiego ufortyfikowanego kompleksu pałacowego. Pałac ten wybudowany został na przełomie III i IV wieku n.e. przez pochodzącego z Ilirii rzymskiego cesarza Galeriusza (Gaius Valerius Galeriusz Maximianus 250-311 rok n.e.). Jego budowa rozpoczęta została po zwycięstwie wojsk cesarza nad Persami, które przyniosło mu sławę i uwielbienie. Przez wieki budowla ta pozostawała w zapomnieniu. Odkryta została ponownie dopiero w XIX wieku, a prace archeologiczne odsłaniające ruiny przeprowadzone zostały dopiero w drugiej połowie XX wieku. W skład kompleksu archeologicznego wchodzą m in. świątynia, pałac cesarski, zarys murów obronnych, liczne posągi oraz mauzoleum cesarza i jego matki (Romuli). W 2007 roku ruiny rzymskiego Pałacu Galeriusza zostały wpisane na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO.
Gamzigrad (Гамзиград) – stanowisko archeologiczne niedaleko Zaječaru we wschodniej Serbii z zespołem budowli późnorzymskich – Felix Romuliana – wzniesionych na przełomie III i IV wieku przez cesarza Galeriusza (250–311), obejmującym ufortyfikowany pałac cesarski, świątynie, łaźnie, tetrapylon oraz mauzolea cesarza i jego matki. W 2007 roku obiekt został wpisany na listę światowego dziedzictwa kulturowego UNESCO.

Na 11 kilometara od Zaječara, na putu ka Paraćinu, prostire se rezidencija imperatora Gaja Valerija Galerija Maksimilijana (297–311), savladara i zeta cara Dioklecijana, utemeljivača sistema tetrarhije. Feliks Romulijana po svojoj očuvanosti i vrednosti nadmašuje ostale slične građevine u Splitu, Milanu i Triru. Jedinstvena je u svetu po celini sa memorijalnim kompleksom na brdu Magura iznad palate: čine ga dve grobnice i dva tumula, gde je obavljeno spaljivanje i apoteoza vladara i njegove majke Romule, po kojoj je nazvana carska palata. Palata zahvata prostor od 6,5 hektara, opasana je odbrambenim sistemo od 20 kula, unutar kojih se nalazi rezidencija sa vestibilima, atrijumima, termama, predivnim višebojnim podnim mozaicima, mermernom oplatom i predmetima i skulpturama od roze granita i zelenog porfirita sa Peloponeza.
