Feng Shan Ho—ROC Diplomat and Chinese Schindler
In September 2015, Republic of China (Taiwan) President Ma Ying-jeou publicly commended Ho for his valiant efforts and issued an official commendation to the former ambassador which was accepted by his daughter, Manli Ho. While serving as the Republic of China’s consul-general in Vienna from 1938-1940, late ROC Ambassador Feng Shan Ho witnessed the Nazi persecution of the Jews. Unwilling to stand by and do nothing, he issued visas granting Jewish refugees safe passage to Shanghai, saving the lives of thousands. Going his whole life without mentioning these courageous deeds, it wasn’t until 1997 the world discovered what the man described as the “Chinese Schindler” had done.

The International Righteous Person Ho Fengshan
In March 1938, Germany annexed Austria (the Anschluss). As a result, about 180,000 Jews in Austria were faced with imminent Nazi persecution, and the only way to survive was to leave the country. It was very difficult for a Jew to get a visa from any of the consulates in Vienna. Dr. Ho Feng Shan rejected this anti-Semitism and decided to issue numerous visas to the Jews seeking to escape Austria after the Anschluss. With his help, thousands of Jewish refugees managed to flee Austria for safe haven in Shanghai.

Kaohsiung gears for dueling large-scale rallies on eve before election
Conflicting campaign rallies are set to divide Kaohsiung tonight. KMT presidential candidate Han Kuo-yu has planned a large-scale event at the Dream Mall in Cianjhen District. Over in the neighboring district of Fengshan, President Tsai Ing-wen''s reelection campaign will assemble its own rally. Turnout is estimated at 200,000 people. In a newly released video, Wecare Kaohsiung calls on its supporters to vote on Jan. 11. It also invited them to the “Reset Kaohsiung” rally on Friday night in Kaohsiung’s Fengshan District.These red envelopes will be distributed at the rally as a small souvenir. The front of the envelope is decorated with mice – three of them, to represent President Tsai Ing-wen’ s ballot number. The Fo Guan Shan Monastery with Buddha Museum is the biggest Buddhist Monastery in Taiwan.
China suspends liaison mechanisms with Taiwan
China says the country has suspended communication mechanisms with Taiwan because the one-China principle is not shared by Taiwan's new president. President Tsai Ing-wen took office last month to replace Ma Ying-jeou.
Spokesperson for China's State Council Taiwan Affairs Office An Fengshan said on Saturday that communication mechanisms with Taiwan have been stopped since May 20th. An said the measure was taken because Taiwan has not acknowledged the one-China principle.
The office has been alluding to the possibility of the suspension, citing lack of explicitly embracing the principle in Tsai's inauguration speech on May 20th.
However, this was the first public announcement of the move.
Communications mechanisms such as regular ministerial talks and a cross-strait hot line were created based on shared understanding with Tsai's predecessor that mainland China and Taiwan belong to one China.
On Friday, Taiwan lodged a protest with China after 25 Taiwanese were deported to China, not Taiwan, for their suspected involvement in fraud schemes in Cambodia. An's comment indicates Taiwan has lost a means to protest to China. Some commentators say China's apparent retaliation against Tsai's government could further strain the cross-strait relations.
