Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), located just outside Batavia, Illinois, near Chicago, is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory specializing in high-energy particle physics. Since 2007, Fermilab has been operated by the Fermi Research Alliance, a joint venture of the University of Chicago, and the Universities Research Association (URA). Fermilab is a part of the Illinois Technology and Research Corridor.
Fermilab's Tevatron was a landmark particle accelerator; at 3.9 miles (6.3 km) in circumference, it was the world's fourth-largest particle accelerator (after CERN's Large Hadron Collider, which is 27 km in circumference, the Large Electron-Positron Collider, which was also 27 km in circumference and the Super Proton Synchrotron, which is 6.9 km in circumference), until it was shut down in 2011. In 1995, the discovery of the top quark was announced by researchers who used the Tevatron's CDF and DØ detectors. Completed neutrino experiments include MINOS (Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search), MINOS+, MiniBooNE and SciBooNE (SciBar Booster Neutrino Experiment). The MiniBooNE detector was a 40-foot (12 m) diameter sphere containing 800 tons of mineral oil lined with 1,520 phototube detectors. An estimated 1 million neutrino events were recorded each year. SciBooNE sat in the same neutrino beam as MiniBooNE but had fine-grained tracking capabilities. The NOνA experiment uses, and the MINOS experiment used, Fermilab's NuMI (Neutrinos at the Main Injector) beam, which is an intense beam of neutrinos that travels 455 miles (732 km) through the Earth to the Soudan Mine in Minnesota and the Ash River, Minnesota, site of the NOνA far detector.
In the public realm, Fermilab is home to a native prairie ecosystem restoration project and hosts many cultural events: public science lectures and symposia, classical and contemporary music concerts, folk dancing and arts galleries. The site is open from dawn to dusk to visitors who present valid photo identification.

Fermilab's Muon g-2 Update Day 2

Fermilab's Muon g-2 is one step closer to it's new home here in Illinois.
Members of the public and Fermilab staff gathered today in Lemont as the 50-foot wide electromagnet was taken off the barge it arrived on yesterday.
After unhooking the magnet from the barge, crews moved the Muon g-2 by crane onto the special truck to prepare for the next phase of the big move.
With the magnet safely off the water, many on the project could breathe a small sigh of relief that this leg was compete.
Once it's here and at the laboratory there's still a lot of work to be done, said Muon g-2 Project Manager Chris Polly. The experiment won't be ready to take data until 2016, but this was sort of the riskiest part of the whole thing. It's a relief to see it here and off the water.
Over the next roughly 48 hours...the Illinois Department of transportation will be inspecting the ring and the truck to clear it for the final leg of tricky travel using I-88 and I-355 over three nights this week from Lemont to Fermilab in Bativia.
We sort of had a practice run for this out in New York, said Polly. We had to transport through about six miles of fairly easy road. It's fairly different than traveling through Chicago suburbs closing down two interstates in the process. It's nice the final leg is here, but it's going to be an exciting week.
Local legislators say this magnet is a great addition to the western suburbs.
I got involved with the g-2 project about a year ago at this time, said Illinois Congressman Mike Fortner of the 49th District. This is a really exciting project for Fermilab, for the area around Fermilab, and for the whole state of Illinois.
The truck transport portion of the move is scheduled to begin at 11 p.m. on Tuesday July 23 and Naperville News 17 will be there to cover that next step.

Fermilab breaks ground on new particle accelerator
Fermilab in west suburban Batavia broke ground on a new particle accelerator project Friday. Mark Rivera explains how it works.

Joseph Lykken, Fermilab, Neutrinos are Everywhere
Fermilab, in Batavia, IL, is the host laboratory of the Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment, a world-class program in neutrino physics that will explore physics beyond the highly successful Standard Model of Particle Physics. The exciting discovery that neutrinos are not massless, as previously thought, has opened a first crack in the Standard Model. The measurements LBNE makes will increase our understanding of neutrinos, which may play a key role in solving the mystery of how the universe came to consist only of matter rather than antimatter.
Government Shutdown
NCTV17's Whitney Goodbred has the story.
After a night of deliberation, Congress failed to reach a compromise on the nation's budget, therefore shutting down the federal government until a resolution is reached.
Congress did agree to continue to pay military personnel and you won't see any changes to Medicare, Medicaid, and postal services.
The shutdown did however furlough 800,000 federal employees nationally, slowed down veteran disability claims, closed national parks, and shut down federal websites.
Congress is continuing to work on a compromise and will continue to earn their paychecks; a thought that doesn't sit well with local residents.
I think it's unfortunate that our representatives, that really don't represent us, have forgotten about the poor and needy in this country, said Naperville resident, Barb Thomas. They set a very poor example of how the political process should work. And that they are still going to take their salaries, while taking away the salaries from other people.
Both the Congressmen and member of the White House are continuing to be paid while other government employees aren't being paid, said Douglas Nelson, a Lisle resident. That's what strikes me as the most ridiculous part.
Local congressman Bill Foster, has said he will donate his paycheck to the Northern Illinois Food Bank.
The nonnegotiable issue for the Republican controlled House is the Affordable Care Act, also know as Obamacare. The GOP says they will only pass a budget that either changes Obamacare or pushes back the deadline for all American to have healthcare one year from the current start date. An idea the Senate continues to reject.
It goes to the Senate and the Senate says we'll strip this language out and send it back to you and then they put the language back in and pass it and send it back to the Senate, said Suzanne Chod who teaches Political Science at North Central College.
The last time the government shut down was 17 years ago during the Clinton administration, but Chod says this time around it's different.
We are at a point right now where there is a small section of the Republican Party that is very loud and has a lot of pull, and the rest of the party is being pulled in a direction they may not want to be pulled in, said Chod. And in doing so and attacking the Affordable Care Act as a part of this budget process is something we haven't seen before.
And the effects are being felt here, Fermilab in Batavia, funded by the Department of Energy, is now operating on reserve funds to keep paychecks coming for their 17,000 employees.
The lab's Director, Nigel Lockyer said in an email sent to all employees: a shutdown, will not immediately affect employees. Fermilab has sufficient monetary reserves in its contract to continue operating for about four weeks, so employees of will be able to continue working during a government shutdown.
President Obama said in a speech to the nation today that he sees the need for Obamacare and isn't willing to negotiate.
