Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail: Key West to Big Pine Key
Biking the southernmost section of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail, which is also the southern terminus of the East Coast Greenway. While good segments of dedicated bike path exist along this section, few of the old bridges can be crossed, meaning portions of this 30 mile ride must be done along the bike lane or shoulder of US 1. Our end point was the Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge, which has nice large rooms and an ample campground suitable for groups.

KEYS AFTER IRMA - 6 WEEKS LATER - ALLIGATOR REEF, SOMBRERO REEF, HIGHWAY 1
Vacationed in Florida Keys October 15-24. We found no RV parks that would be open before next year except Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge. They will be open by Thanksgiving. Because of that we had to find alternative places to launch the boat. The 1st place was one mile south of Bud N' Mary's Marina. This gives you a straight shot to Alligator Reef. The 2nd place was the put-in at 33rd street in Marathon beside the Yacht Club. You must travel 2 miles to the bridge but then it is a straight shot to Sombrero Reef. The 3rd place is Spanish Harbor about 1 mile before Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge. It is not a straight shot to Looe Key but close. The 4th place is Little Torch Key off State Rd 4A - 2nd right. This is a put-in directly off the road, no circle and very little parking. We did not use this one but it is now open. (Side note - if you have a canoe or kayak Sammy's Creek is open). We visited Looe Key Reef but did not take pictures due to low visibility the day we were there. We dry camped at K-Mart in Marathon and a church parking lot. Some lodging was open. We were told Key West was completely cleaned up but we did not visit there. Most restaurants were open although some were only taking cash.

Our first time staying at Big Pine Key Fishing Lodge and trolling offshore we encounter a pod of friendly dolphins that want to ride the pressure wave of the bow of the boat. It's dead calm, but we find some fish eventually.

Day 1: Biscayne Bay & South Beach
Welcome to Biscayne Bay, the first destination on our sailing adventure in South Florida. Biscayne Bay and South Beach are full of five-star resorts, have a reputation of being the Mecca of nightlife, and attract thousands of tourists each and every day. Sailing along Intracoastal Waterway offers a perfect opportunity to take photos of luxurious homes of the rich and famous on Fisher Island, Palm Island, Star Island, and Hibiscus Island. In the afternoon, we’ll return to South Beach where you can check out some of the most beautiful nightclubs or just unwind with a drink on the deck.
Day 2: Head to the Florida Keys
In the morning, we head south until we reach the magnificent Florida Keys. Along the way, you can enjoy water activities including wakeboarding, waterskiing, and scuba diving. The Florida Keys are known as an excellent destination for boating and boast numerous attractions and activities. From sunbathing at Bahia Honda State Park that covers approximately 400 acres to the favorite bars on Duval Street in Key West, there is no shortage of fun things to do here. In the afternoon we can visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum or relax by the water under the palm trees.
Day 3: Key Largo
On day 3 of our Florida Keys yacht charter itinerary, we are scheduled to visit the dive capital of the world, also known as Key Largo. Home to the world's second largest artificial reef, Key Largo offers plenty of chances to dive, snorkel, and enjoy the beautiful sunset views. Visit the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the first underwater park in the US. Here, you can admire a fantastic array of colorful fish. Some of the other not-to-be-missed attractions in Key Largo include the Key Largo National Marine Sanctuary and the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park.
Day 4: Key West
No yacht charter adventure in South Florida is complete without spending a day in Key West, the southernmost point in the continental US. This fabulous island is a great place to go fishing and enjoy watersports. A visit to the Mallory Dock for the Sunset Celebrations where you can have drinks and food at one of the restaurants and bars is an excellent addition to your yacht charter itinerary. In the afternoon, we can explore the stunning coral reef and visit some of the most popular beaches in the Florida Keys such as Smathers Beach and beach at Fort Zachary Taylor. Going deep-sea fishing is also an option here in Key West.
Day 5: Marquesas Keys
On day 5, we are heading west to a group of uninhabited islands called Marquesas Keys. These 10 islands were formed millions of years ago by a meteorite which created a giant lagoon surrounded by mangroves and white-sand beaches. It is also worth mentioning that the islands are the only natural atoll in the whole Western Hemisphere. From exploring Marquesas Keys with a kayak to relaxing on the deck of your yacht with a refreshing drink, the options for having a good time here are endless. Marquesas Keys also offers magnificent sunset views.
Day 6: Little Torch Key
Our next destination is the lovely Little Torch Key and the modern Little Palm Island Resort and Spa. Little Torch Key and its neighboring islands of Ramrod Key and Summerland Key are an excellent place for fishing and kayaking. If you feel like scuba diving, we can explore the nearby Ramrod Key before we sail to the private island of Little Palm which is home to the exclusive Little Palm Island Resort and Spa. This secluded retreat is only accessible by boat. While visiting the island, you can choose from an array of water activities including kayaking, deep-sea fishing, and even sky-diving.
Day 7: Miami
On the last day of your private yacht charter, we are heading back to Miami which is the final destination of our Florida Keys Adventure.

In this Florida Keys Catch and Cook episode:
We start our 420 weekend visiting Windley Fossil Reef Geological State Park. There are some nature trails at Windley Fossil Reef that are pretty cool. I recommend checking the place out!
After some non catch and cook Windley Fossil Reef nature trails we head to Robbies to feed the tarpon. I catch tarpon feeding in slow motion with my new camera which is pretty cool. The tarpon get us excited for some offshore fishing and my 420 weekend friends are ready to catch and cook fish (no not because of the munchies) Maybe from the saltlife beer we have to drink.
Ok, it's the 420 munchies and not the saltlife beer. So let's go yellowtail snapper fishing! We put the boat in a John Pennekamp coral reef state park and head out south to do some offshore fishing. We start off bottom fishing with ballyhoo and quickly catch some fish. We catch a barracuda vertical jigging. Then we catch a monster yellowtail snapper. It's officially a catch and cook fish episode! More of a snapper catch clean cook than anything at this point here in the Florida Keys. Key largo to be specific.
I have a great time fishing the florida keys. I always seem to catch clean cook fish everytime I go offshore fishing. Today we wern't just vertical jigging and bottom fishing but we were also spearfishing! Chris missed a nice mutton snapper. That would have been great for the catch and cook, but the yellowtail snapper will still be great to fuel the 420 munchies.
I catch mutton snapper in the next fishing episode so don't you worry about that! And I will be doing a lot of spearfishing this year so be prepared for more of that here in the Florida keys. I love spearfishing key largo, but make sure you know you are in a legal spot to spearfish in Key Largo as you cannot spearfish in the John Pennekamp state park reef boundaries.
Jordan also catch a black grouper, but on 420 the grouper were not in season. May 1 the grouper are in season so this won't be a grouper catch n cook luckily for this black grouper we caught. But there will be a black grouper spearfishing video coming out soon. No fish will be safe from Heiko Winkler this spearfishing season out of Key Largo.
I hope you enjoyed this 420 Weekend Special. Fishing the Florida Keys Catch and Cook fishing episode on the South Florida Fishing Channel. Please leave a like and comment to show your support. Thank you!
