The Hood: Cops, gangs and a community in the crossfire - The Fifth Estate
North Central Regina is one of Canada’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, where Indigenous gang violence is on the rise, and the police response is matching it. The community is caught in the crossfire. It's a conflict with deep roots, and some alarming new dynamics. But beyond the headlines about guns, drugs and gangs there are some surprisingly hopeful solutions with people determined to take back control of their community. Duncan McCue digs into all of that in a special hour-long edition of The Fifth Estate.

The Super Storm of 2010
The October 2010 North American storm complex was a record non-tropical cyclone event occurring across North America. The massive storm complex caused a wide range of weather events including a major serial derecho stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes, a widespread tornado outbreak across the Southeast United States and Midwest and a blizzard across portions of the Canadian Prairies and the Dakotas. The cyclone's lowest minimum pressure of 953 mbar (28.11) made it the most intense extratropical cyclone ever recorded in the continental United States, surpassing the lowest US pressure of 958 mbar from the Great Ohio Blizzard of 1978
Significant snowfall was reported on the backside of the storm. The heaviest snow fell in parts of Minnesota where 9 inches (22.5 cm) of snow was reported in St. Louis County, Minnesota. Heavy snow also occurred in North Dakota, southwestern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan.
The non-tropical cyclonic storm generated wind speeds of up to 70 mph caused by a severe low pressure zone over Nebraska on the October 24th.
Akron, Cleveland, Findlay, Marion, Lorain, Mansfield, Toledo, Wooster and Youngstown, Ohio all witnessed heavy winds on the 24th.
American Midwest was hit by an intense low pressure system which would later become an extratropical cyclone (later known as 'Carmen' in Europe after November 8) between October 25 and 27.
Severe weather battered Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio on the 25th and 26th of October, producing strong winds, rain, hail, widespread tornadoes and the major 'Chiclone' on the 26th. Severe weather that hit Illinois and Indiana was dubbed a 'Chiclone' (for Chicago+cyclone). It was the region's second strongest storm on record. The weather station in Bigfork, Minnesota recorded a state record air pressure 955.2 millibars (28.21 inches of pressure), typical of a Category 3 hurricane. The National Weather Service reported that a tornado with a maximum speed of 115 mph touched down about four miles east of Peotone in Will County, south of Chicago at that morning and traveled 2.9 miles and caused downed power lines and partially destroyed a home. Another tornado was reported to have landed in Racine, Wisconsin.
Heavy damage was reported in the Chicago area, particularly in Kane, Will, Kankakee, and Iroquois Counties in Illinois and in Porter County in Indiana. The winds had flipped single engine planes on their sides at DuPage Airport in West Chicago, and flights were delayed by 30 minutes on to O'Hare and Midway airports]. More than 300 flights were canceled at O'Hare International Airport and more than 60,000 ComEd Co. customers were without power due to the severe weather throughout the Midwest. Several other, less powerful tornadoes also occurred in Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Nebraska and New York state. Heavy snow also fell in south western Ontario. There were no fatalities with this system.
A GOES satellite image on October 26 showed what could be considered the eye of the storm over the Minnesota-Ontario border, with outlying clouds reaching as far as Alberta, southern Nunavut, Newfoundland, eastern Montana, Colorado, Louisiana, Maine and Bermuda.
The storm developed so quickly, that it was declared to be a weather 'bomb', which is a extremely fast developing storm that drops at least one millibar of pressure per hour for 24 hours; a phenomenon more commonly seen over water than land.
The morning of October 26, a serial derecho caused widespread damage from Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio Tuesday. Louisville, Ky; Cincinnati, Cridersville, and Toledo, Ohio, Nashville, Tennessee Indianapolis were hit at 9 am CDT, and Detroit was hit during the midday and early afternoon hours. Other cities impacted by the storms included Pittsburgh, Pa., Buffalo, N.Y., and Charleston, W.Va. Tornado damage to homes was also reported in and around Peotone, Ill., and Kokomo, Ind., while another tornado reportedly uprooted and downed trees onto homes near Racine, Wis.

Ohio's move to toss inactive voters from rolls goes to Supreme court
COLUMBUS (AP/WCMH) — Joseph Helle was expecting a different sort of reception when he returned home from Army tours in Iraq and Afghanistan and showed up to vote in his small Ohio town near Lake Erie.
His name was missing from the voting rolls in 2011, even though Helle had registered to vote before leaving home at 18 and hadn’t changed his address during his military service.
Helle, now the mayor of Oak Harbor, Ohio, is among thousands of state residents with tales of being removed from Ohio’s rolls because they didn’t vote in some elections. The Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesdayin the disputed practice, which generally pits Democrats against Republicans.
The case has taken on added importance because the parties have squared off over ballot access across the country. Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to suppress votes from minorities and poorer people who tend to vote for Democrats. Republicans have argued that they are trying to promote ballot integrity and prevent voter fraud. Only a handful of states use a process similar to Ohio’s, but others could join in if the high court sides with the state.
Adding to the mix, the Trump administration reversed the position taken by the Obama administration and is now backing Ohio’s method for purging voters.
Helle, 31, describes himself as a “red-state Democrat” and did not vote for President Donald Trump or Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
“I’m not one of these people that flaunts their military service, by any means, but to be told I couldn’t do one of the fundamental rights I went off and served this country for was just appalling,” Helle said, recounting his reaction after being dropped from voter registration rolls.
Ohio has used voters’ inactivity to trigger the removal process since 1994, although groups representing voters did not sue the Republican secretary of state, Jon Husted, until 2016. As part of the lawsuit, a judge last year ordered the state to count 7,515 ballots cast by people whose names had been removed from the voter rolls.
A federal appeals court panel in Cincinnati split 2-1 last year in ruling that Ohio’s process is illegal. In May, the Supreme Court agreed to hear the case.
Under Ohio rules, registered voters who fail to vote in a two-year period are targeted for eventual removal from registration rolls, even if they haven’t moved and remain eligible. The state says it removes names only after local election boards send notices and there’s no subsequent voting activity for the next four years. Ohio argues this helps ensure election security.
“It’s important for us to keep up-to-date, accurate voter logs,” said Aaron Sellers, a spokesman for the Franklin County Board of Elections in Ohio’s largest county.
Ohio State University law professor Daniel Tokaji, co-counsel in the case, says there are ways for Ohio to keep it's voter rolls clean. Whatever the motive of the Secretary of State, if Ohio or any other state is purging people from the rolls because of their failure to vote - that's a clear violation of federal law, period.
Helle said he had no idea his name had been dropped and said he mailed in absentee ballots in some years and not others. His local elections board said it has no record that Helle voted while he was away.
But even if he hadn’t voted, Helle said opting not to cast a ballot should be a voter’s choice and shouldn’t be penalized.
“That’s part of the free-speech argument to me,” he said. “Choosing not to vote is as important as choosing to vote. It’s one way to say, I do not believe in what’s going on here, or in either candidate, for instance.”
The main argument on behalf of voters whose registrations were canceled is that federal voting law specifically prohibits states from using voter inactivity to trigger purges. The state “purges registered voters who are still eligible to vote,” former and current Ohio elections officials said in a brief supporting the voters.
At the Supreme Court, voting cases often split the court’s liberal and conservative justices. Civil rights

Camping at Lake Loramie State Park, Ohio
The campground is just outside quaint Fort Loramie, a bitty little town armed with a few bare necessities: a gas station that doubles as a grocery store, a TV repair shop, and a motel with a Dairy King out front. It’s within easy biking distance if you brought a set of wheels camping with you or you could make an afternoon of it if you opt to walk. In any case, it provides an afternoon of small-town diversion perfect for campers in the simple-life mindset.
But there’s no need to leave the campground, really. There’s a mini convenience store inside the check-in building that stocks everything from first aid supplies to candy to bait to orange juice and even offers cups of coffee and a microwave. It also happens to be where you can rent bikes, canoes and kayaks at very reasonable rates (a canoe rental only costs $6 for the first hour!). There are also basketballs, horseshoes and lawn games to borrow and there’s a volleyball court, as well. Guests can also play putt-putt on a (small, run-down) course for only $1 per game. It’s not much, but it’s something to do and the kids seemed to really enjoy it. And here’s a tip: if you plan on playing multiple times in a day or weekend, just skip the last hole that eats your ball and hang on to it until you play the last game of your stay, that way you only have to pay once!
There’s also a nature center that offers nature programs throughout the day and several playgrounds to keep the kids (or parents like my dad who love to swing as much as kids) occupied. There was even a puppet show put on by (I’m assuming) a local church on Sunday. Of course, since the campground is on a lake and in fact surrounded by a mote, there’s also a “sandy” beach for swimming and sunbathing. I say “sandy,” but really it was just fine dirt. Nevertheless, it offers a beachy atmosphere complete with picnic tables and shelters.
Campers can fish pretty much anywhere on the lake, but all that our party seemed to have luck with was river catfish. Sure you can fix them up for dinner, but they were all pretty small and taste like mud. Or so I’m told. I’ve never actually eaten a catfish from a river or lake. But if you do decide to try your hand at fishing, remember if you’re over 16 you have to have a fishing license which you can get by stopping at somewhere like Wal-mart on your way to the campground or online here. Prices start at $19 for residents and $11 for a one-day pass for visitors.
But naturally my favorite part of the trip was the kayaking. Josh and I love kayaking and so do my parents, so we were out circling the lake and conducting paddle races every day. There’s plenty of lake, so we explored a different part of it each time.
And of course there are the evening campfires for hot dog grilling and s’more making. But you can leave the Hershey’s at home. I got your new favorite concoction right here: graham crackers, marshmallow and Reese Cup. I’m obsessed with peanut butter and it makes the most amazing s’more ever! Of course, if you’re my dad, you chase your s’more with an apple or cherry pudgy pie (two slices of buttered bread with a hefty helping of apple or cherry pie filling smeared between them and cooked in a cast iron sandwich toaster which is placed into the hot coals until crispy on the outside and warm and gooey on the inside).
Not a tent and pop-up shelter kind of person? Well, fear not. There are even three little cabins on the lake equipped with air conditioning and gas grills so “roughing it” doesn’t seem so rough.
All in all, Lake Loramie State Park is a good choice if you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path kind of adventure in Ohio. And at $24 per night for a tent sight, a heck of a lot cheaper than a hotel (and more fun). Don’t forget the bug spray!
