13th Kentucky Infantry | Kentucky Life | KET
The Kentucky Life episode recounting the story of the 13th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry was nominated by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for a Regional Emmy Award.
Back in 1861, host Dave Shuffett's great-great-grandfather put on a blue U.S. Army uniform, left Green County, and joined the 13th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry to fight against the South in the U.S. Civil War.
The Kentucky Life crew travels to Shiloh in Tennessee, where the 13th first saw combat, and then to Resaca and Kennesaw Mountain in Georgia.
Dave also takes part in a battle re-enactment at Camp Wildcat in Laurel County, joining the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Union soldier. This group, which mainly portrays a company from the famed Confederate Orphan Brigade, also re-enacts as the Union's 13th Kentucky.
There were 751 total Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Award entries this year, a record number, and only 291 received nominations. Nineteen KET productions and programs were nominated for an Emmy Award. This episode was produced by Brandon Wickey and Dave Shuffett.

Applied Imagination | Kentucky Life | KET
Paul Busse, owner and chief fantasy maker of Applied Imagination in Alexandria, located in northern Kentucky, creates large-scale model garden railways and public garden exhibits out of objects found in nature. These unusual exhibits offer entertainment and fantasy in an end-product that delights all ages.
A regular at the New York Botanical Garden train show, Busse's exhibits entertain a huge influx of holiday visitors with a large and lavish display for the season. Fans of Paul Busse have two options: Plan a holiday trip to New York, or visit Cincinnati's Khron Conservatory, where the design firm erects a smaller holiday display. Both are good bets at any time of the year.

Looking back one year ago
“The Sun Shines Bright…”
A year ago, our amphitheater was closed and we appeared to be witnessing the end of the 60 year legacy of The Stephen Foster Story. Today, we celebrate the work and dedication of so many people who have made it possible to reopen the amphitheater and keep the legacy alive. Our county, city and state governments as well as local businesses, industries, agencies and individuals have dedicated time and resources to make a capital project to rebuild our stage a reality. It has taken many partners working together to bring us to the point of new construction and the scheduling of our 2019 Summer Season. On behalf of the staff and Board of Directors of The Stephen Foster Drama Association, I want to express our sincere gratitude to all who have made it possible for Dec 21, 2018 to look much brighter than it did a year ago.
In order to open as scheduled and truly be able to utilize our new venue to its greatest potential, we have one step left to complete – funding a new sound system. We are kicking off a fundraising campaign to raise $75,000 toward this project. Our friends and fans have been so generous this year and now we ask you to spread the word about this opportunity to help finalize our capital project with sound equipment worthy of our new stage and the excellent shows we produce.
Donations toward the Amphitheater Sound System can be made by following this link: stephenfoster.com/donate or by mailing a donation to
The Stephen Foster Drama Association/Sound
P.O. Box 546
Bardstown, KY 40004
We are dedicated to our mission of bringing quality entertainment to the amphitheater and celebrating the legacy of Stephen Collins Foster. Our history and yours are tied together by so many wonderful memories – onstage, backstage, from front-of-house and from the audience. Thank you for helping renew and restore this Kentucky treasure!

Abraham Lincoln's Birthplace: Hodgenville, Ky. | President's Day | Kentucky Life | KET
Our Town—Hodgenville
As the town closest to the Larue County birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, Hodgenville celebrates Lincoln's legacy in many ways.
Lincoln was born on Feb. 12, 1809, on Sinking Spring Farm, three miles south of present-day Hodgenville, in what was then Hardin County. The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site is located here. When Lincoln was 2, his family moved to Knob Creek, a few miles away, where he lived until age 7. His boyhood home is also part of the historic site.
Hodgenville's Lincoln Museum, located on Lincoln Square in the historic district, features 12 scenes from Lincoln's life as well as memorabilia and an art collection. The town is a prominent place along Kentucky's Lincoln Heritage Trail.
This segment features Lincoln impersonator Jim Sayre of Lawrenceburg, a member of the Association of American Lincoln Presenters and a winner of the group's Abraham Lincoln Award.
Lexington, KY: One of the Most Educated Places in the U.S.
Lexington, Kentucky is among the most educated cities in the United States. With the abundance of colleges and universities in the region, Lexington is near the top in percentage of its population with a bachelor's degree, and it was recently (2010) named the second Best City for Education by Parenting magazine.
Salyersville, Ky | Kentucky Life | KET
Kentucky Life visits the Magoffin County town of Salyersville. Located on the Licking River, the town (population 1,883) was established out of the former Adamsville in 1860, the same year the county was formed out of parts of Morgan, Johnson and Floyd counties.
A big draw here is the Pioneer Village, where the Magoffin County Historical Society has rebuilt original log cabins—some dating back to the early 1800s—to create a living history museum. The society also runs a genealogical library and honors a different family each year for Founders Days.
The town sits in the Eastern Coal Field, and a major employer here is Joy Global, a mining equipment manufacturer with operations worldwide.
Salyersville is rebuilding after an EF3 tornado on March 2, 2012, damaged schools, homes, and several Mountain Parkway businesses. With the work of untold numbers of people, the town is slowly getting back on its feet. Signs of renewal include groundbreaking for a new church, the reopening of the Subway restaurant, and the reopening of an auto parts store.
