South Valley Oregon Fire Near Dufur Burning at Nearly 15,000 Acres | Gift Of Life
More than 170,000 acres of land are burning across Oregon and Washington states and more than 7,000 firefighters are working to contain the fires, the Forest Service said on Thursday. There were 20 fires burning in Oregon alone, covering 132,000 acres of land as of Wednesday. One of those fires was the South Valley fire that started Wednesday afternoon. When it was first reported around 1:30 p.m. PDT, the South Valley fire was burning at less than 100 acres of land. But the blaze expanded incredibly quickly and eight hours later, at 10 p.m. that same day, it was burning across roughly 10,000 acres, according to the Oregon Department of Forestry. The fire had also managed to jump the highway in the area, Highway 197, and was moving east as of Wednesday evening. The highway was closed from milepost 14 to milepost 34. The fire is in north central Oregon not far from the city of Dufur, Oregon. Evacuations and updates about the fire were available on the Wasco County Sheriff’s Facebook page. As of Wednesday evening, the evacuations that were in effect were for Rail Hollow Road until the forest boundary, Tygh Ridge Road, Winslow Road, Shell Rock Road and several others in the area. These roads were all under level three, or mandatory evacuation notices. The full list is available from the Wasco County Sheriff’s Office. Hundreds of people were required to evacuate their homes, KATU reported. Level two, or “get ready” evacuations were ordered for several roads, too, including Hulse and Conroy Roads. The Wasco Sheriff’s Office recommended anyone traveling check the website Trip Check from the Oregon Department of Transportation before heading out to make sure their route is clear. The cause of the fires is currently under investigation, according to the Department of Forestry. The conditions were expected to remain dry in the area, which could help the fire continue its rapid spread. Firefighting personnel were working to contain the blaze using all of their resources, including bulldozers, helicopters and planes. The sheriff’s office warned that conditions near the fire can change incredibly quickly and that residents should check for any updates on evacuations regularly as it is an active incident.

Traffic Stop Becomes Deadly Gun Battle
John Van Allen, 34, was driving his three children - a 10-year-old girl and two boys, ages 13 and 15 - when he opened fire on Orgeon State Police Trooper Matthew Zistel on Aug. 29. Allen, a former soldier with the U.S. Army, was shot in the chest before he drove away. He was found slouched over the wheel of his car a half-mile up the road and pronounced dead.
Dramatic footage from the dash cam of an Oregon state trooper shows the moment a fatigues-clad man unholstered a pistol and opened fire on the officer, who managed to fatally shoot the suspect when the gunfire erupted.
John Van Allen, 34, was driving his three children — a 10-year-old girl and two boys, ages 13 and 15 — when Trooper Matthew Zistel pulled him over for speeding on I-84 in The Dalles, about 90 miles east of Portland, on Aug. 29, The Oregonian reported.
But Allen, a former soldier with the U.S. Army, stepped out of his vehicle and refused to move when the 26-year-old officer told him to get back behind the wheel.
Sir, please get back in your car for me now, Zistel pleaded, according to the clip aired on KGW-TV.

John Van Allen, 34, a former soldier with the U.S. Army, was fatally shot in the chest after he opened fire on an Oregon state trooper during a traffic stop on Aug. 29.
Suddenly, Allen pulled out a handgun and started squeezing off several shots at the officer, hitting him in the left side.
Allen continues to fire as he sprints toward the wounded officer and off camera. A few more shots are heard until Allen falls back into the frame and crouches in front of the car.
The shooter darts back into his sedan and peels away, but cops found him slouched behind the wheel and bleeding from a bullet wound to his chest just a half-mile up the road.

Allen died at the scene.
Zistel, a five-year veteran officer, was treated for his wound at a hospital, where he was expected to recover.
Tiffany Still Swiff Haines, a friend of Allen's, told The Oregonian that the father of five had moved to Portland a year ago from his home in Pittsburgh.
Allen was shot in the chest before he sprinted back to his car and drove away. He was found slouched behind the wheel of the sedan about a half-mile up the road and pronounced dead at the scene.

She said the man was looking to turn his life around after a bad marriage and a few arrests for driving offenses and fighting.
He said the kids were doing well and that he had gotten a new car, a new house and a new girlfriend, and everything was working out for him, she told the paper.
She was also surprised to hear that three of his children were inside the car during the shooting.

I can't see him jeopardizing those kids, she said. I've seen him pack up and move to get away from a bad neighborhood.
A relative told the paper that Allen was taking his kids back to his native South Carolina. But no one could guess why he chose to open fire on the trooper.
Fatal Shootout on Interstate 84 in Oregon
Oregon State Police Thursday released a dramatic video showing the gun battle that unfolded in August on Interstate 84 about 100 miles east of Portland, ending in the death of a Portland motorist.
The freeway confrontation lasted only moments, according to the patrol car video from the Aug. 29 episode. The video, released to The Oregonian after a public records request, starts as Trooper Matt Zistel stops a Cadillac driven by John Van Allen, 34. Allen had three of his children with him that afternoon as he pulled over near Biggs Junction.
The video shows Allen stepping out of his car and assuming a military pose. After Zistel repeatedly tells him to get back in his car, Allen pulls a pistol from his waistband, advancing on Zistel and firing. The video doesn't show Zistel.
After shots are fired, the video shows Allen returning to his car and driving off. He was shot in the chest but the video shows no obvious injury.
Zistel radios, Shots fired and then moments later, I've been hit in the side. I'm okay.
Responding officers found Zistel suffering a gunshot wound. They found Allen's car a half mile down the freeway, parked on the shoulder. Allen was dead, shot once in the chest.
Zistel was treated for his injury at a hospital in The Dalles and released. He has been on administrative leave. Zistel, 26, has been with the agency five years. In a subsequent investigation, Sherman County District Attorney Wade McLeod concluded Zistel was justified in shooting Allen.
Relatives said Allen was returning to his native South Carolina at the time of shooting. They said the aggressive action was out of character. He moved to Portland from Pittsburgh. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve as a construction engineer from 2009 until 2012.

Old Firehouses ▬ Episode #2 – Riverside, California's Old Firehouses
Welcome to Episode #2 of a new playlist named “Old Firehouses”. In this playlist, I want to upload interesting photos, share the building’s history and find the “unique” that nearly all older firehouses have. While most of the videos will come out of the United States, I’m hoping to include old firehouses from other countries as well.
In Episode #2, we’re visiting the old firehouses that were once used by the Riverside Fire Department. I hadn't planned on shooting another Old Firehouse photo shoot but we drove right past the one, and how could you say no? So, we took as many pictures as we could before the rain came back. The first firehouse (old Fire Station 2) is in great shape and I think will last a long time. The second firehouse (old Fire Station 4), which I wasn't going to include in the video, needs a lot of care and major repairs. Not really sure this old firehouse will last too much longer. In any event, we got to look at some more great older firehouses and look forward to finding more.
If you're watching this series of videos and are thinking about something you want to see in the videos, where possible, let me know in the comments.
Hope you enjoyed this video and thanks for coming by the channel.
