Dozens braved the rainy weather to enjoy the annual Cruisin' For Our Heroes event sponsored by the Baltimore County (MD) Sheriff's Office on September 12, 2009 at the Fire Museum of Maryland. Highlighting this year's event (and shown in the video) were three classic antique fire engines pumping together from a portable tank - a 1916 Mack Bulldog from the Baltimore Fire Department, considered one of the museum's prized pieces; a 1922 Ford engine that once served the Camden (Michigan) Fire Department; and a 1939 Ahrens Fox 500GPM/250GWT pumper that once ran with the Munster (Indiana) Fire Department. Also helping with the water display was an Oshkosh crash truck from Martin State Airport and Chesnut Ridge Volunteers Engine Tanker 503. Providing rides was a 1964 American LaFrance 900 series oben cab that formerly served with the Dover (New Jersey) Fire Department.

The Berwyn Heights Volunteer Fire Department provides both EMS and Firefighting protection to the residents of Prince George's County, located in the suburbs of Washington DC.
Unlike any other fire department in PG County, Berwyn Heights has NO ENGINE in the firehouse. This means the volunteers are highly trained in Truck Company Operations and Heavy Rescue Work. Many firehouses around the world have engines, but ONLY Berwyn Heights has just a truck and rescue squad. Members who join Berwyn Heights have the opportunity to become part of the PGFD Technical Rescue team as we are the only volunteer company in PG County to be apart of that.
Inside the firehouse you will find live-in or bunk-in members who live in the firehouse. These members go on vast majority of the calls and actually live at the firehouse. They go to school full time at the University of Maryland, some choose to work for Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute (MFRI) or have a full time job somewhere else.
Our fire house is staffed Monday through Friday during the day with Career Firefighters from the PG County Fire Department, but our members are still able to ride fire trucks any time they want.
We are looking to grow our team and add to the best fire department in the county, state and world. If you are interested in becoming an EMT, Firefighter or both this is a great opportunity for you. We offer free training and you do not need any experience.

Some Maryland pastors get tax exemptions on multi-million dollar homes
From schools, to hospitals and churches, hundreds of Maryland properties are tax exempt. But what about multi-million dollar homes? Should they get a pass on the tax tab? ABC2 News Investigator Joce Sterman explains why some of those who pray to a higher power don't have to pay a dime in property tax.
It's a bill most of us dread, even though we've come to accept it. But we all know property taxes come with the territory when you own a home. Towson's John Downs explains, We have to pay taxes to support our municipal services.
That support that's based on the size of your home. The state makes an assessment and you send in a check. So you'd expect that the bigger the home, the bigger the payment to cover the tax tab. But that's not always the case.
The owners of a $2.1 Million mansion in Lutherville don't pay a dime in property tax. Neither do the people who live behind the gates of a $2.6 Million estate in Upper Marlboro. Stoneleigh resident Maureen O'Ferrall says, God bless them.
Well, actually, he already does. That's because those multi-million dollar homes are tax exempt. They're parsonages. Robert Young, the deputy Director of the state's Department of Assessments and Taxation, explains, It's the house that's furnished to a minister by an identifiable religious congregation for use by that minister.
In Maryland, tax exemption for parsonages is not guaranteed or mandatory. Many churches, including those with parsonages above the million-dollar mark, choose not to apply and some who apply are not granted exemptions. But hundreds of houses do make the cut, although five are worth more than a million bucks. Young says, The value of the property raises questions in anyone's minds and we inquire further.
We had plenty of questions too, because when it comes to the home for a man of God, the sky's the limit. The state never set a cutoff. Young tells ABC2, No one every thought it was probably necessary to have a dollar limit on the amount of a parsonage.
But some think its necessary now, including Baltimore City Councilman Carl Stokes. He says with the state's financial crisis, there's far less room for free rides. Stokes says, We're going back to the same people and asking them to pay more out of their pockets for less services, frankly.
The Councilman would like to continue exempting the churches themselves, but for your sake, he feels it's time for their leaders to put a little something in the state's collection plate to cover the cost of services provided to their homes. Stokes says, The police still come to that property. If there's a fire, the fire truck doesn't stop at that imaginary line.
Tax records show religious exemptions in Maryland totaled nearly $8 Billion in 2008, with a big piece of that money coming from parsonages. But when it comes to drawing the line, many have no problem with pastors getting an exemption, no matter what size home they live in. Marylander Nicole Barrett says, They serve the community so I think it's fair. They serve God so I would say that would be fair.
But fair is not a question for a higher power. Instead, it may become a question for those in power in Annapolis. Stokes plans to discuss a potential cap for tax exemptions with members of the delegate from the city of Baltimore.
**We asked the churches who own each of the homes seen in the video for our story to comment (Higher Dimensions Christian Center, Spirit of Faith Christian Center, German Lutheran Church and the Archdiocese of Washington), but none were interested in speaking on camera. Only the Archdiocese of Washington, DC issued any statement to ABC2, telling us the Potomac property seen in our video is one many church owned properties. That home is located behind a nearby Catholic church and is used as a rectory. A spokeswoman tells us, Catholic priests live on the church property wherever it is located - and churches are located in very poor communities and in wealthy ones.

Baltimore City Fire Dept. Engine 45 / Truck 27 / Medic 14 This Train Garden is the oldest running garden in the Baltimore City Fire Department. It was started 56 years ago by the members assigned there. It continues to be organized, setup and run by the members assigned at the station with one exception. A members wife, who volunteers her time and creativity to help design and build a section of the garden. The garden is supported buy the gracious donations from our visitors. Thanks to all who have donated in the past 56 years. Please continue to give so the garden can live. The Train Garden is open now thru January 7, 2012. 10:00am to 9:00pm daily. Thousands pay last respects to Lt. Nathan Flynn
Firefighters, family, friends and local leaders converged Saturday in Harford County to say goodbye to a hero. Howard County firefighter Lt. Nathan Flynn died Monday when he fell after a floor collapsed inside a Clarksville house where he and others were fighting a seven-alarm fire.

The Amoskeag Manufacturing Company’s Machine Shop in Manchester, New Hampshire rolled out its first steam locomotive engine on March 1, 1849, and after a successful run in this business ceased locomotive production in February 1858. In July Ezekiel Straw was put in charge of the operations. This made him the top administrator for the entire company, as he was already managing the real estate, the water power system, and textile manufacturing. Straw, a civil engineer, was always looking for innovative ways to increase the company’s reach and profitability, especially if it involved technological innovation. Under his leadership, the Machine Shop would next take on the exciting challenge of manufacturing steam fire engines.
The steam fire engine trade was just beginning to blossom in the United States, and demand for new and better engines was high. Competitions were set up to pit one manufacturer against another, and these events became popular entertainments. Scott and Bean brought their engine to Boston for a series of public trials on August 31 and September 1, 1858. There were three other machines in the running, including one from Philadelphia, and two from Boston.

Tim Cassidy and I were given this story at the last minute and it was far away from the station. In spite of this we worked together to put a nice story together. This was a day of air package and we had about three hours to drive back and forth, shoot the story, write it, track it, cut it and feed it.
