Founded in 1994, INDYCAR serves as the sanctioning body for the IndyCar Series. Its first race was the Indy 200 on Jan. 27, 1996, at Walt Disney World Speedway in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. (It was won by Buzz Calkins).
These stars drive single-seat, open-cockpit cars that feature a 2.2-liter, twin turbocharged, direct-injected V-6 engine optimized to run at 12,000 RPM with an estimated 500-700 horsepower depending on the turbocharger boost setting. Indycar practice at 2016 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
The SCCA Trans-Am Series held a race on a St. Petersburg downtown waterfront circuit from 1985 to 1990. Local residents and businesses complained about noise, and the event was put on hiatus.[1] Drive Jim Fitzgerald was killed in a crash during the 1987 race.[2][3] Racing in the Tampa Bay Area also included an IMSA race at the Florida State Fairgrounds from 1989–1990.
In 1996-1997, the St. Petersburg race was revived on a course around Tropicana Field. Along with the Trans-Am Series, support races included U.S. FF2000, World Challenge, Pro SRF, and Barber Dodge. The event subsequently went again on hiatus for several years.[1]
In 2003, the event was revived again for the Champ Car series. A new, modified version of the original 1985–90 waterfront circuit was created.
For 2004, the event was cancelled due to a dispute between the promoters. When the race returned in 2005, it switched to the IndyCar Series, marking the first non-oval event for the Indy Racing League. In 2007, the race weekend was expanded to include an ALMS event.
Andretti Green Promotions took over promotion of the event.[4] Starting in 2014, Firestone took over as title sponsor

Second Time Arounders at the 2019 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
During my trip to IndyCar's Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March 2019, it was my pleasure to watch the Awesome Original Second Time Arounders Marching Band perform in the plaza in front of the Dali Museum the morning before the race. My dear friend, Barbara Keighley-Beck, is the President of this marching band, but this was my first chance to see them perform live.
The Second Time Arounders are an adult marching band based in St. Petersburg, Florida with approximately 450 members. They will be making their second appearance in this year's Macy's Parade in New York City on Thanksgiving morning. Being chosen to march in the Macy's Parade once is an honor, and to be chosen a second time is very rare. So be sure to tune in to give them a round of applause!

Here's a video I put together from clips I filmed at the final day of the Firestone Grand Prix in St Petersburg, Florida, today. With the exception of the final few clips at the end of the video (which were from day 2, as I forgot to upload them in my other video) I was seated in Grandstand 3 which gave me some great views of all the action and allowed me to experience the sounds up close. Event security didn't allow me to bring in my tripod since I didn't have a press/photo pass so the video is a bit shaky. That said, taking into account I was also using the onboard mic, I feel as though the video turned out pretty great. Today's event highlights that I filmed include the Indylights race, the Stadium Truck race, Indycar warmup, and the actual Indycar race. It was quite an astounding race to be my first and I'm glad to have been in attendance!
