never-ending story(386) - chania old harbour , crete, greece 15 sep 2016
the spontaneous whistler
===================
the chania old Venetian harbour, old in the sense that its history can be traced back to the 1300's, when it was built by the Venetians. the harbour was used for commerce and also to control the sea of crete against pirates. on its north side the harbour is protected by a breakwater. near the middle of this is a small bulwark like a gun emplacement and the tiny chapel of St Nicholas. the Firkas Fortress at the harbour entrance and the St Nicholas bastion in the middle of the breakwater defended the harbour from raiders. today, the Venetian harbour offers moorage for fishing boats and other small craft, while the commercial and passenger port of chania is seven kilometres to the east, in Souda Bay. the lighthouse is a distinctive feature of the harbour. it was built at the harbour entrance by the Venetians and restored in its present form by the Egyptians (1830-1840). the lighthouse of the Venetian harbour of Chania always fascinates visitors and is one of the most-photographed monuments in crete.
along the breakwater, a couple strolled leisurely under the hot sun. he whistled a tune nobody had heard, not even he himself. she asked, is this a new tune?
he said, I don't know yet. let's see how it turns out.
he's not musically trained - musical notes and tempos were as foreign to him as Greek was to a Chinese. nor was he musically endowed. more often than not, he could not catch the right notes in the songs after he listened to them even for many times; he's note-blocked. but raw music came to him as naturally as the wind blowing over the pond. the pond responded with ripples spreading over its surface. he expressed it with his whistling. he's a spontaneous whistler; but the tunes he whistled were not from any existing tunes/pieces but from his own music box in that deep end of his mind. many a time, the tunes sounded flat, un-melodic and uninteresting. but he was surprised he did have recorded down some catchy tunes which he liked.
a story may not start from a story line, it can start from a poem, a glimpse of spark from the heart, a casual splash of paint on the canvass, a touchy tune from the back of the mind, a walk in the park, a slightest scent of the leaves.... any thing that peels away the shroud that wraps up the flint of creativity, that generates the spark of romance and that promotes the sense of the humility.
this story started in the office in which they had their cubicles.
a cubicle is a small place isolated from other cubicles by partitions with an open entrance...leaving a lot of opportunities for interactions among colleagues, especially for neighbouring cubicles; you could just stand up and talk to your neighbour as if the partition does not exist.
for 2 years they had been colleagues, with neighbouring cubicles , but they interacted only occasionally, since they belonged to different departments and no direct work interaction.
he, just a junior engineer among 100's, not tall, not handsome. she just out of school, in the sales department, the plump and tall type, not particularly attractive.
sometimes they met at the office canteen and nodded to one another, and he had his conversation gang and she had hers.
....
the big bird had 2 young chicks to feed. both the chicks dug their beaks into the big bird's mouth for more food. the stronger one got a bigger share....
the office people was alerted of the scene in the bush outside the office. and people crowded near the window to watch it.
she said, how come only the mother bird taking care of the chicks? where's the father bird?
he said, how do you know it's the mother bird? could it be the father bird?
they started a father/mother bird argument in the office with the male colleagues arguing for the father and the females for the mother.
after this incident, there seemed to be a bigger gap between them; they tried to avoid each other when they went to the canteen, not even greeted each other when they met....
she even complained to the HR that his whistling in the office disturbed her concentration on her work...

LightHouse Old Port Chania - FPV drone pilot George Kyriakakis
Lighthouse Old Port Chania December 12 2014
Chania Lighthouse, the jewel of the city, is one of the oldest light houses, not only in Greece and the Mediterranean, but also in the world. The Lighthouse is a major attraction in the old port of Chania especially at night when it's lit up. The tower is 21m high and is built on a stone base, located at the end of the old harbour's pier opposite to the fortress of Firkas. Chania lighthouse was first constructed by the Venetians around 1595 - 1601, and it took its final form, in the shape of a minaret, during the Egyptian Period (1831 - 1841) in around 1839. After the latest restoration, completed in 2006, it was given the formation of the Venetian period. The minaret look is still evident however.
The tower is divided in three diverse parts: the base is octagonal, the middle part has sixteen sides, and the third part is circular. The construction material of the base is of the same origin and quality of the material used for the fortification of the city of Chania by the Venetians.
In 1864, the lighthouse was assigned to the French Company of Ottoman Lighthouses, and during the final years of the Turkish occupation, the staircase of the east side was constructed, in the entrance of the lighthouse tower. Recent renovations include the octagonal watch house with the small dome, and the water pipes under the base of the lighthouse.
The lighthouse is not operational today.
