Cantigny is a 500-acre (2.0 km2) park in Wheaton, Illinois, 30 miles west of Chicago. The land was acquired by Joseph Medill as a country estate, which he called Red Oaks, in the late 1800s. After his death, the estate passed to his grandson, Colonel McCormick. Colonel McCormick served in World War I and saw action at the Battle of Cantigny. After returning home, he renamed the estate in honor of the battle.
During World War I, Colonel McCormick served with the First Division of the United States Army—also known as the Big Red One. Colonel McCormick provided an endowment for the First Division Museum. The museum has exhibits and artifacts chronicling the First Division's service history, not only in World War I, but also in World War II and later U.S. wars.
On display outside the museum is the area's largest collection of tanks and artillery pieces, known as Tank Park. The collection includes tanks and armored vehicles from the First World War up to the present day.

First Division Museum - U.S. Army
A pride inducing look at the Army's First Division Museum at Cantigny ... including The Big Red One's roles in ... World War I, World War II, the Vietnam War, and the war on Terrorism (Afghanistan and Iraq).
You will also see real tanks used by the First Division along with a rare World War II Landing Craft Vehicle Personnel (LCVP), known as the Higgins Boat, that was acquired in 2008 from its Normandy, France location. And while there is no way to confirm if LCVP was used during the 1944 D-Day invasion of Normandy, it seems probable due to where it was located before it was brought to the First Division Museum at Cantigny.
Note... Some scenes are dark and difficult to see clearly due to the respective display depicting an historical event occurring at night.

First Infantry Division Museum
The First Infantry Division Museum, located at Fort Riley, Kansas, tells the story of the Army’s most storied division. Founded in 1917, the First Division (First American Expeditionary Force) was created by General John J. Blackjack Pershing to meet the growing threat in Europe by Germany. The Expeditionary Force was comprised mainly of Army units on duty on the Mexican border.

Welcome to Cantigny Park
Cantigny: An Extraordinary Gift
In his will, Robert R. McCormick (1880-1955) specified that his beloved Cantigny estate be maintained “as a public park and museum for the recreation, instruction and welfare of the people of the State of Illinois.”
Cantigny, located in Wheaton and named by McCormick for the little village in France where he fought in World War I, was the Colonel’s gift to the community. And what a gift it has turned out to be!
Something special is always happening at Cantigny. It’s a popular venue for festivals, workshops, lectures, concerts, reunions, school trips, banquets, weddings and other activities. Permanent features include nearly 30 acres of gardens, two history-rich museums and 27 holes of championship golf. All 500 acres are yours to enjoy and explore.
In the park or on the links, we hope to see you at Cantigny soon!
The U.S. Role on the Western Front by Jennifer Keene
The third presentation at the Teaching Military History Institute entitled America’s Entry into World War I. This History Institute was sponsored by FPRI's Madeleine and W.W. Keen Butcher History Institute, the First Division Museum at Cantigny (a division of the Robert R. McCormick Foundation), Carthage College, and FPRI's Center for the Study of America and the West. These remarks were made at the First Division Museum at Cantigny in Wheaton, IL, on April 9, 2016.
First Division Museum at Cantigny - LCVP -Higgins Boat
Landing Craft, Vehicle, Personnel (LCVP)
The First Division Museum's LCVP likely was present in Europe during the Normandy campaign. The boat's post WWII history is not well known; it was found in Northern France working in the fishing industry. It was being converted into a barge when it was sold to a museum near Omaha Beach. Next, a private collector purchased it, determined to bring it back to the U.S.A. for public display. The First Division Museum purchased the LCVP and shipped it to the North Carolina Maritime Museum where it underwent a seven month restoration. Though its serial number was lost while being used as a barge, staff from both museums used maritime historians and period drawings to determine it was built in 1943.
With its original markings unknown, the First Division Museum designated the boat PA45-18 to represent an LCVP from the U.S.S. Henrico, which landed soldiers from G Company, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, in the first wave of the assault on Omaha Beach. Nearly 1,100 LCVPs were used during the Normandy invasion, with over fifty destroyed on or near Omaha Beach.
Following its extensive restoration, the boat arrived at the First Division Museum on April 1, 2009. Of the more than 22,000 LCVPs manufactured during WWII, fewer than a dozen are known to exist today.
