Lecture – Joseph Shulam “Simply Paul: Who is He and Who are His Opponents?” (Joseph Shulam is a Hebrew scholar and Christian minister in Jerusalem)
Given 7pm - 9pm on Saturday April 2, 2016 at The Lanier Theological Library Chapel in Houston, Texas.
It is part of the Lanier Library Lecture Series. A series devoted to bringing world class lectures to benefit the community of all those who might be interested.

Even in the first century the disciples of Yeshua (Jesus) had difficulty understanding Paul and his writings for several reasons. One reason Joseph Shulam proposes is that Paul was a lawyer and wrote like a lawyer. Also, Paul was a very religious Jew by his own confession and the audience to whom his letters were written had very little understanding of the Jewish world and Hebrew Bible. Further, Paul held to the Jewish/Pharisaic worldview of God’s program for history (past, present and future). Even the Jews had a hard time understanding Paul and his theological ideas because they were in a struggle for survival and did not see the bigger picture and solution to their problems. Shulam proposes that we allow Paul’s own words to describe himself and his background in order to define his identity and his theology in the best way and to identify his opponents most accurately. By getting Paul’s clear view of himself we can better understand his battles both inside and outside the church. This lecture will give you fresh insight into some of Paul’s most difficult passages.

Joseph Shulam was born in Sofia, Bulgaria in 1946 and immigrated to Israel with his family in 1948 just before the establishment of the State. He grew up in Jerusalem where he was introduced to the New Testament in high school. Joseph immediately identified with Yeshua, which eventually led him to faith in the Messiah. As a result, he was rejected by his family and traveled to the United States to finish high school in Georgia. He returned to Jerusalem and studied Biblical Archaeology and Bible at Hebrew University. He returned to the U.S to study New Testament and Chemistry at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he met his wife Marcia. They have two children and two grandchildren.
In 1969 they started a congregation in Tel-Aviv. In 1972 Joseph began 3 years of rabbinical college studies, followed by more graduate study at Hebrew University. In 1981 he established the Netivyah Bible Instruction Ministry and in 1982 purchased a building on Narkis Street, the first for a Messianic Jewish congregation in Jerusalem. This building was renovated and expanded with support from around the world. It was dedicated in March 2015.
Joseph has lectured extensively around the world and has encouraged disciples in most European countries, as well as Finland, Bulgaria, Russia, Brazil, China, Egypt, Japan, Korea, Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, of course.
Joseph has written and partnered in writing several books, including commentaries on Romans, Acts and Galatians. He also authored Hidden Treasures: The First Century Jewish Way of Understanding the Scriptures; Planted in the House of the Lord God, Israel, and the Church; Starting a Messianic Jewish Yeshiva and Speak Tenderly to Jerusalem.
How Can Religion Affect Politics? Kevin Belmonte at the Veritas Forum
- At the Veritas Forum at UNH, biographer Kevin Belmonte reflects upon the life of William Wilberforce and how his religion shaped his political career. William Wilberforce was the driving force in Parliament behind the abolition of the slave trade in the early 19th century. His Christian faith motivated him to persist in pushing to end slavery even when he faced public ridicule for it. Belmonte cites Wilberforce and Martin Luther King, Jr. as positive examples of how religion can shape politics.

Best of Railfanning 2017
2017 brought many highs and lows. Mr. Harrison brought many changes to CSX this year. He created the short-lived Q252, Q450, and Q451. Despite a brutal hurricane, the death of unit rock trains, and an overall decrease in traffic on the Auburndale Sub, 2017 still had its highlights, such as Folkston Railwatch, an impressive streak of foreign power in South Florida, and a trip to the NS GS&F. These are just a few of my most memorable catches of 2017. Here's to 2018!

Atlanta is the capital of the U.S. state of Georgia. It played an important part in both the Civil War and the 1960s Civil Rights Movement. Atlanta History Center chronicles the city's past, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site is dedicated to the African-American leader’s life and times. Downtown, Centennial Olympic Park, built for the 1996 Olympics, encompasses the massive Georgia Aquarium.
The separated skyscrapers of Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead make Atlanta’s three skylines, and the size of any one of these districts could rival the center of any other city in the South. Atlanta is not all high rises though; each of the city’s urban neighborhoods offer unique atmospheres that are well adapted to living in the shadow of the city.
Downtown (Five Points, Centennial Park, Sweet Auburn, Hotel District, Castleberry Hill)
The most central and commercial area in Georgia (economically and politically), downtown Atlanta includes the state capitol, city hall, the CNN Center, Georgia Aquarium and the New World of Coca-Cola
Midtown (Midtown, Atlantic Station)
Just North of Downtown, this is a major business and residential district with tall skyscrapers and a popular nightlife area. This district also includes Piedmont Park, the Woodruff Arts Center, and the Georgia Tech campus.
Buckhead
Located several miles North of Midtown, Buckhead is a popular business and nightlife district. Buckhead is surrounded by neighboring Brookwood Hills, as well as Peachtree Battle, Lindbergh Center, and the Governor's Mansion.
East Atlanta (Virginia-Highland, Little Five Points, Candler Park,
Poncey-Highland, East Atlanta Village)
The alternative shopping district Little Five Points is bordered by the trendy Virginia Highland, Old Fourth Ward, Inman Park, and Candler Park neighborhoods. Further south lie milltown communities and historic streetcar suburbs like Cabbagetown, Reynoldstown, Edgewood, and East Atlanta.
South Atlanta (Grant Park, Hapeville, Southeast Atlanta)
Home of the city's first park (Grant Park) and neighboring Victorian homes, as well as the busiest airport in the world, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. South Atlanta also contains the neighborhoods of Mechanicsville, Peoplestown, and Lakewood.
West Atlanta (Upper Westside)
Working class neighborhoods that are seeing increased investment from the city. West Atlanta includes Vine City, Bankhead, Historic West End, Adair Park, Collier Heights, and the Upper Westside
Decatur
The city of Decatur is only a few miles from downtown Atlanta, but has held on to its residential small-town charm. One of the most pedestrian-friendly areas in Atlanta, Decatur is home to many excellent restaurants, bars, and boutique shops.
