Fish Lake Regional Park due for makeover
Fish Lake Regional Park in Maple Grove is getting a much needed makeover. Three Rivers Park District officials say over the past few years, they've received many complaints that the water was too shallow at the boat launch.
I frequently see a lot of the boats drive in and they'll hit the bottom before they get into the water with their props, said Maple Grove resident David Denninger.
Crews will fix the current ramp in hopes of making it easier for boats to get in and out of the water.
We're going to be narrowing the width, but extending it out further into the lake, said Three Rivers District engineer Eric Nelson.
The $1.4 million project also includes replacing pavement on trails and parking lots.
All the pavement from the entrance gate, down to the boat ramp and the pavilion will be fully replaced, added Nelson.
Kip Narbo lives nearby and comes to the park often. He said the improvements are badly needed. He said there is a huge crack on the trail near the entrance of the park.
It's right down the center, they put tar in there, but it seems like every year the frost kind of separates it again.
Crews will also make the trails more handicapped accessible by flattening out some of the trails so they aren't as steep.
The park will be closed for vehicle traffic from July 15 through September 15. Park goers will still be able to access the park via trails.

Hundreds of dead fish appear at Maple Grove lake
Fish Lake in Maple Grove is a popular spot for swimming and, of course, fishing. But fish created quite the stink recently.
Dead fish all along the shoreline, said resident Sarah Ophoven. We went to go dip our toes in and there was dead fish.
Dead fish by the hundreds washed ashore due to a natural occurrence that happens in the spring and early summer.
Some years are worse than others, this happened to be a particularly bad year I think because of the rapid, increase in air temperatures, said Rich Brasch, senior manager of water resources with the Three Rivers Park District.
A bacterial infection is also to blame, said Brasch. Most of the dead fish are sunfish. While fish kills can be gross and even smell a little bit, they're really not harmful to humans. Park officials recommend folks just leave them alone.
Obviously you don't want to pick up a dead fish under any conditions and eat it, said Brasch.
Fish kills only last for a few days. High levels of nutrients in lakes can also cause fish kills. Homeowners can help by limiting the amount of fertilizer they use on lawns.

Possible MN State Record White Sucker While Finesse Fly Fishing!
On this episode of Ahrenoutdoors, we are in the southeastern region of Minnesota, and I catch a possible state record white sucker. I didn't expect it to be this close to being a record when I got home, but when I searched it, the record is 9.1 lbs, and This one was at least eight. Even though I never got it certified if it was one or even measured and weighed, it was still a very good fish and is probably at least a line class record.

Three Rivers busy expanding regional trails
This summer, there will be more places to run, walk and bike. The Three Rivers Park District is busy expanding regional trails in Robbinsdale, Brooklyn Center and in Plymouth.
Crystal Lake Regional Trail
Three Rivers park crews are currently working on the Crystal Lake Regional Trail in Robbinsdale. The trail's signature piece is a large boardwalk around Crystal Lake.
It looks fabulous and with the new boardwalk it's going to be cool, said Robbinsdale resident Paul Liddicoat.
The trail will run from Twin Lake down along Bottineau Boulevard, loop around city hall and then toward Crystal Lake. The $2.6 million project is part of a plan by the Three Rivers Park District to improve park access to inner-ring suburbs. Ultimately, the trail will continue northwest through Brooklyn Park, Osseo and Maple Grove and connect to Elm Creek Park Reserve.
Twin Lakes Regional Trail
On Tuesday, heavy equipment moved dirt along 45th and Regent Avenue as crews enhance the Twin Lakes Regional Trail. The trail connects with Crystal Lake Regional Trail and heads through northeast through Brooklyn Center neighborhoods and eventually, when construction is complete, to North Mississippi Regional Park along the Mississippi River.
Medicine Lake Regional Trail
After 30 years in the making, the Medicine Lake Regional Trail in Plymouth is almost complete. Crews are closing the remaining gap along County Road 47. It should be done and open to the public in July.
You will be able to get from the Luce line Regional Trail to French Regional Park up to Fish Lake Regional Park and all the way beyond to Elm Creek Park Reserve, said Kelly Grissman, director of planning .
The ultimate goal for Three Rivers officials is to have 400 miles of regional trails. So far about 140 miles are complete. Park officials want the whole trail system to be complete by the year 2040.

3 Things You Didn't Know About Maple Grove
3 Things that might surprise you about Maple Grove
With its burgeoning population and development, the northwest suburb of Maple Grove is often known today as one of Minnesota's fastest growing cities, a mecca of shops and restaurants, and a hub for recreational activity with its many parks, lakes, and trails. But all that growth started because of one thing about forty years ago: the opening of a new section of Interstate 94.
Here's three things that might surprise you about Maple Grove.
#1: Interstate 94 transformed Maple Grove
When a new section of Interstate 94 opened up in 1974, it was a game changer for the Village of Maple Grove. Prior to 1974, Maple Grove was a small rural township, 36 square miles made up mostly of farmland, fields, and 2,000 acres of gravel mines. The small village had just over 6,000 residents in 1970, but that all changed once I-94 came through Maple Grove four years later.
The freeway came through Maple Grove, and all of a sudden people are saying, 'where did this community come from?' said Maple Grove City Administrator Al Madsen.
By the end of 1974, Maple Grove had become a city, and by 1980, the population had more than tripled in size with 20,525 residents. Today, the city's population is around 62,000.
As residential neighborhoods popped up, the city had plenty of land to develop, a blank canvas of sorts for city officials to plan and map out what the future Maple Grove would look like, and where there's residential, retail often follows.
#2: A retail hub behind Bloomington and the Mall of America.
Today Maple Grove is home to more retail that nearly any other city in the state. While retail started to move in the 1980's, it was the creation of the Main Street shops in 2000 and the opening of the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes around 2004 that really got things going.
With the Fountains at Arbor Lakes and The Grove retail developments opening up in recent years, Maple Grove has well over three million square feet of developed retail space, and the city has about a third of its land still available for development.
While the city's many shops, restaurants, and services are well used by Maple Grove residents, because of its proximity to I-94, the city has also become a one-stop shop for thousands of people from upstate Minnesota and even neighboring places like Canada and North Dakota.
We come here all the time, said Heidi Cloutier of St. Michael. [It's] only about ten minutes on 94, so very quick.
Laurie Bammann of Sartell was shopping at the Shoppes at Arbor Lakes on a recent afternoon, and she said often opts for Maple Grove over further away shopping destinations likes the Mall of America.
We don't have to go all the way to Minneapolis, it's just so pretty here, so we just come here, said Bammann.
#3: Weaver Lake Beach is one of the city's hidden gems
Depending on who you ask, Maple Grove's best kept secret may be its recreational assets with all its lakes, parks, and trails.
Weaver Lake Beach is one great example. Located on the city's west side and tucked within Weaver Lake Community Park, the beach is a spot that many Maple Grove residents have yet to discover.
We've heard from numerous people over the years that they walk over the hill from the parking lot and low and behold there's this beach, said Mark Saari, Superindentdent of Recreation with Maple Grove Parks & Recreation.
With a fishing dock and concession stand, Weaver Lake Beach isn't new. It's been around since the 1960's, but it's the one beach owned and operated by the city, and it's a jewel to discover.
We would love to see more [people] come out here, said Saari.
