Zane Grey - IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame
Zane Grey
1872 - 1939
1998 Inductee
Best known for his Western novels, Zane Grey was a pioneering angler, a great innovator, and one-time holder of more than a dozen saltwater world records. Just as significant as his fishing accomplishments is the fact that Grey was a superb storyteller who inspired countless anglers the world over with his tales of travels and encounters with fish. As a boy in Zanesville, Ohio, Grey fished for bullhead and bass in the Muskingum River. His first fishing mentor was locally known as Old Muddy Miser, a man who fired Grey's imagination with tales of trout and salmon and great saltwater fish, which he said no one seemed to go after. Grey would eventually go after them, but not until he'd married, tried dentistry and disliked it, and begun writing after hours. After struggling for some years as a writer, the lean years ended with the 1910 publication of Riders of the Purple Sage, a phenomenal seller that brought Grey fortune and freedom to do what he wanted. Grey fished across the United States and around the world, both salt and freshwater. He was the first man to catch a 1,000 pound fish on rod and reel. He pioneered methods for catching the elusive broadbill swordfish and successfully championed the use of light tackle for sailfish. He was the first to use the mother boat concept for keeping his smaller fishing boat supplied without having to return to land. Grey caught snook before other outdoor writers discovered them, he was one of the earliest bonefishermen, one of the first to recognize the great fighting abilities of permit, and was among the first to start taking sailfish in the fertile blue Gulf Stream. With his 190 foot schooner The Fisherman, Grey was among the first to explore sport fishing in Mexico, Central and South America, New Zealand, Australia, and the South Pacific. In 1952, Ed Zern wrote of Grey, No other man ... has devoted so much of his fortune, or so large a share of his time and energy, to the catching of fish for the sport of it.

The BEST Tasting Fish is Swimming Beneath Your Feet- Florida Pompano- Catch, Clean and Cook!!
In this Catch, clean and Cook I prepare Florida Pompano. The Pompano fish was caught while surf fishing on the beach in Marco Island, Florida. I was snook fishing, but was welcomed with one of the best tasting fish to eat instead. I show how to fillet the pompano and reveal a simple gourmet fish recipe. The pompano is a saltwater fish that roams Florida Beaches and is highly sought after for its food value.

Girl Fishing for Exotic Clown Knife Fish in Florida, Freshwater Bucket List Catch!
I went bassfishing on my new boat for peacock bass and largemouth bass and instead caught my first clown knifefish! Also first fish on my new project flats boat, a 17' Lowe Roughneck with a 70hp Yamaha. Clown knifefish: this species, native to tropical southeast Asia, has been released from people's fish tanks and into Florida's freshwater system, especially in Palm Beach County, FL where they are very popular.

Gentle Giants: Goliath Grouper
Sometimes, while diving, you hear them before you see them. Then, their enormous outlines come into view. These gentle giants are goliath grouper, the largest of the groupers in the Atlantic basin.
Goliath grouper, which were once known as jewfish, can grow to more than eight feet in length and 800 pounds. From July through September, goliath groupers converge at special locations to spawn. As a group, they release milt (or sperm) and eggs into ocean currents to create the next generation of goliaths.
After hatching in the open ocean, these baby fish make their way into coastal mangrove estuaries or areas where salt and freshwater mix. Here they settle in leaf litter along the muddy bottom.
They remain in the mangroves, gorging themselves on shrimp, crabs, and fish for approximately six years. Then they begin to migrate offshore to reefs and shipwrecks where they grow and mature, and eventually join other spawning groups to keep the population healthy and growing.
These giant groupers were once so overfished in the Southeastern United States, they were considered for listing under the Endangered Species Act. As fishers got better at locating shipwrecks and reefs and used more sophisticated and lethal fishing gear, these gentle giants didn't stand a chance.
Rampant development along mangrove coasts has also degraded their juvenile habitat causing a decline in population.
Thankfully, a vocal and dedicated group of fishers and marine scientists worked together to prompt NOAA to ban all harvest of goliath grouper. This action in the early 1990s gave the grouper time to recover and gave scientists time to learn more about this fish in hopes of sustaining its rebound.
Scientists have been eager to learn more about the goliath grouper: How many are there? Is mangrove destruction limiting their comeback? What does spawning behavior look like? To date, marine scientists have tagged thousands of goliath grouper to study these questions and many more.
Goliath grouper mean many things to different people. They once were fished for food or simply as a trophy. Now, more and more people are enjoying swimming with goliath grouper in their natural habitat - watching them interact with divers and their environment, and taking beautiful photos of this charismatic animal.
Fishers have also been encouraged by their comeback - taking advantage of a robust catch and release fishery. With careful management, everyone can experience these exciting fish in a variety of ways - with fishing rod or camera -- for generations to come.
