The Mysteries of Fishbourne Palace
In 1960 a man was laying a water pipe underneath the quaint village of Fishbourne near Chichester, West Sussex, when he uncovered what looked like Roman remains.
After he duly reported the discover, the archaeologists were called in and they quickly unearthed more and more prestigious finds. They went on to uncover the largest Roman domestic building ever to be discovered north of the Alps: a palace laid out on imperial lines.
Many questions surrounding the history of this palace remain unanswered; to this day fascinating mysteries remain at Fishbourne Palace.

Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex, England was a surprising discovery. Dating to just a few decades after the Roman invasion of Britain of 43 AD, it is a grand villa, clearly built by someone well-connected. It is thought to have belonged to the client king Cogidubnus. Only around half of it has been investigated, as much of it lies beneath a road and a row of houses. My visit was quite nostalgic, reminding of the first time I went, on a school visit. Those were the days! By chance I visited on a day the Roman Army re-enactment society The Ermine Street Guard were there, which turned out to be fascinating. They take authenticity very seriously!

Fishbourne Roman Palace is in the village of Fishbourne, Chichester in West Sussex. The large palace was built in the 1st century AD, around thirty years after the Roman conquest of Britain, on the site of a Roman army supply base established at the Claudian invasion in 43 AD.

Fishbourne Roman Palace
Some of the Roman mosaics to be seen at Fishbourne Roman Palace which was discovered in 1960 when workmen from a local water company were laying pipes and dug up some of the mosaic.
It was probably built for Tiberius Claudius Togidubnus who ruled the Regni tribe in this area, the Regni were governed from Noviomagus Reginorum ('New Market of the Proud Ones' or Chichester as it's now called.

The famous Fishbourne Roman Palace in West Sussex, England (U.K.)
A fantastic find, back in the 1960's, when a JCB driver unearthed a few random rocks when clearing some farmland, which, when investigated further, with the help of archaeologists, turned out to be the biggest discovery of a well preserved Roman Palace (or Villa) in the U.K. A fascinating example of Roman occupation in England many centuries ago, in AD75. Well worth a visit for all ages. There's an excellent cafe tea room there, too!

Fishbourne Roman Palace
The remains of the supposed Palace of the Client King Cogidubnus at Fishbourne. The pretty blank area to be seen before moving outside is the site of the bath house - very little remains apart from the tiles of the cold plunge pool. In the garden (recreated on the excavated trenches of the Roman garden) can be seen the replica of an open air triclinium (dining area) and we visit the potting shed where we meet the garden slave.

Fishbourne Roman Palace, and then to Bignor Roman Villa to see some more amazing mosaics. Both venues had lots of Roman artefacts, and the mosaics were as good as any I’ve seen at Pompeii or Herculaneum, but I have to say the mosaics at Bignor had the edge on Fishbourne Roman Palace. Both great places to take your little ones if your looking for somewhere to take them during this lovely summer.
