Travel Spot - Flight 93 National Memorial
We pay a visit to the Flight 93 National Memorial in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. I'm still humbled by the silent reverence all of the visitors gave to this, the resting site of the 40 bravest souls who fought evil and died on one of the darkest days in U.S. History.
Please, if you ever get a chance to visit the memorial, please do. Show them that their awe-inspiring courage will never be forgotten.
Shutdown did not stop tourists from visiting Flight 93 Memorial
Original Air Date: 10/2/13
By: Kerri Corrado
STOYSTOWN, Pa.--The Flight 93 National Memorial was closed due to the government shutdown. But, it didn't stop tourists from paying their respects. There were cars all over here and a lot of people were really unhappy, Haslup said, who is visiting from Florida. Many people parked their cars at the entrance and walked around the closed gate.Haslup said he was determined to walk 4 miles to the site.I am going to make this walk down and pay my respects whether this park is opened or closed and thats what I did, he said.Haslup wasn't the only one who came to visit the memorial while it was closed. People from all over, even Australia, came to see it. Some stayed, some left, but many tourists were upset their visit was cut short.I dont think it is right. I dont think we should be suffering for what our government has done, Haslup said.It is a memorial for people who were lost in a tragedy, it has nothing to do with the government, Schafer said, who drove from Ohio.Schaffer decided to turn around once she realized the gates were closed. She said she was saddened she couldnt visit and felt sympathy for the families of Flight 93.It is a sickening feeling to not be able to come where your loved ones are remembered, Schafer said.
The Crash Site of Flight 93
This year, I went on a trip throughout the Northeastern United States - all the way from North Carolina to Maine. I wanted to visit places I hadn't been to before - both typical highlights of the state as well as locations off the beaten path. I used AtlasObscura.com to help meet the latter condition.

Flight 93 National Memorial, 2015.04.23
Table of Contents:
0-2 min. Introduction
2-4 min. Explanation of site lay out
4-9 min. Views of upper area of site & beginning of FAA radio transmissions
9-10.5 min. Views of lower area of site & Military radio transmissions
10.5-20 min. Views inside Visitor’s Center
I hoped in this presentation that the viewer would not only see and understand the Flight 93 Memorial but also would sense the confusion, apprehension and frustration as responsible FAA and Military personnel tried to make sense of the fast evolving situation. It took years of investigation to finally determine how ill prepared the FAA and Military were to communicate with one another and for the military to admit they were not in any way effective in intercepting the threatening aircraft.

One of the stops during the Vulcan Riders Association (VRA) national rally. A wonderful program giving the victims of Flight 93 more than a name on the news. The ranger gave them personality, life, and meaning.

Tribute to Flight 93
I created this video in high school for a senior project after visiting the temporary memorial for Flight 93 several times. As excited as I am about the new permanent memorial being built, I will always treasure the simplicity and emotion of the temporary one and how my first visit to it changed my life.
Thank you to all of the heroes of 9/11. Rest in peace.
