Shauno ROLLED the Dirty 30 in Coffs • Does it survive?
Coffs is one of the toughest 4WD destinations on the planet. Coming unstuck isn’t a matter of chance, it’s a matter of time - as Shauno found out, big time! Read Graham's full write up here:
Welcome to Commando – one of the most insane, epic 4WD challenges anywhere in the country! Shauno first attempted Commando over five years ago, back when the 60 was a wagon. Now he’s had a second crack at this infamous hill climb, and well…let’s just say, you’ve gotta see it to believe it!
Joining him on this trip to the 4WD capital of Australia is Graham, Brenno in the mighty Project GU, and Chris from Superior Offroad 4WD in his Navara that doesn’t know the meaning of getting stuck. This thing will deadset drive anywhere!
If your idea of the ultimate 4WD escape is mental tracks and remote campsites, then this is one DVD you simply can’t miss! Packed full of the best local advice (including a bulletproof G60 that Graham’s absolutely blown away by) and tough driving tips, if you love laugh-a-minute, high entertainment low-range action, then you’ve come to the right place.
Grab a drink and enjoy our white-knuckled guide to the biggest and baddest tracks that Coffs Harbour has to offer!

Serious 4x4 Roll Over & Recovery (Inc Slow Mo Replay) @ Widow Maker Coffs Harbour
Please take care out on the trails guys. Things can turn bad very quickly. We were very lucky no one was hurt in this roll over and everyone made it home safely although the Nissan Patrol didn't but plastic and metal are easily replaced.
Use the time stamps below to navigate the video and be sure to drop us a comment with how you would have handled this climb.
As you all know videos never do the terrain justice and Widow Maker in Coffs Harbour is a prime example. It is very steep and wide so when things go wrong they go seriously wrong. A high consequence hill that's for sure and the Nissan Patrol was fortunate not to keep rolling and stop where it did.
The right side of Widow Maker is very difficult with a large step in the middle of the climb. When climbing this step the front of the 4wd will get very light and things can go wrong very quickly. The left side of Widow Maker is also difficult however the step is a lot smaller yet things can go wrong very quickly too and it has also claimed several 4x4 vehicles.
As you can imagine after this 4x4 fail roll over emotions and adrenaline were very high and that makes it hard to think clearly. After making sure the driver was not injured we checked for fuel leaks, there was none. So as much as we wanted to immediately plan, act and recover the GU Patrol we took a 20min break before even trying to make a recovery plan and let the shock somewhat settle. The recovery took place and as tricky and complicated as it was it went smoothly. 3 winches were used. The 1st winch was an anchor at the front of the vehicle so it wouldn't run away down the hill. The second winch was also an anchor to the side making sure it wouldn't roll over again once it was upright as it was still in a bad position with a big lean. The third winch was used to pull the Patrol into a better position and drag it down the hill.

Jetty Jumping Flips! - Perth Australia
Quick edit from a session down at Coogee Jetty in Perth.
Good fun spot! The railing makes some jumps challenging but opens up the possibility of some sketchy stuff.
I read and reply to all comments, so feel free to ask anything or start a conversation.

Bar Crossings Australia & NZ
Collection of Bar Crossings that didn't go as planned for the skippers involved. This is not an instructional video on crossing coastal bars. If you are unsure of the correct technique, for your boat/hull type then contact your local marine licensing authority, Coast Guard or Marine Rescue and enquire about a bar crossing course. I can say however that every technique you see in this video is wrong!

Rollover on the Noosa Bar. Sunday morning, March 3, 2019.
The bar was still pretty gnarly this morning. Some good sets coming through for the surfers but not a good place to be in a small boat as two men and their dog discovered around 6.20am, about 15 minutes before a 1.9m high tide. They were almost out when a couple of waves stood up right out back. A smallish one set them up and a boomer took them beyond recovery point and they took on too much water when they landed to stay afloat. No one hurt, fortunately, and the strong sweep across the river mouth deposited the boat and its occupants on the North Shore within 15 scary minutes of the incident. The dog recovered first and could be seen running up and down on the beach with a stick. With the help of a few beach goers they righted the boat and later hitched a tow (from the Noosa Coast Guard) back to the Gympie Terrace boat ramp. It's blowing 15 to 20 knots from the south east at the moment so wouldn't be too exciting out there anyway. Background Music: 'Still Standing'... by Anno Domini Beats. fishingnoosa.com.au
