Soho punk tour, London
Speaking of crazy housing prices - and punk rock - FlipsideLondon Tours host Aidan McManus took us on a two-hour walking tour of London's Soho area to talk punk music's origins.
Flipside London TV: Prostitutes, Immigrants and Rachman's role in the Tories' Downfall
Perec 'Peter' Rachman was a notorious slum landlord but a 'friend to the black man' according to the Empire News, because he was one of the only landlords to rent to West Indian immigrants.
He was also tied to the infamous Profumo Affair - though not involved - through his links with Christine Keeler and Mandy Rice-Davies, who both had been his lovers. When he died his reputation was cemented as the worst of Notting Hill's slum landlords, but that was convenient for many who profited from charging high rents to people who could barely afford it.
Aidan McManus is a local tour guide and raconteur whose research into the history of the area takes him deep into the alternative written and spoken history of London. Here he looks at the haunts of Rachman and his associates and uncovers some of the hidden goings on that led to the downfall of the Tory Government in 1963, when Rachman came out of the shadows and became Notorious.

Flipside London TV: Soho Gangland - The Fight that Never Was
Soho in 1955 was a scene of illicit sex, hot jazz, violent crime and illegal gambling. Frith Street is the setting for the infamous 'Fight that Never Was': a sickening brawl between two of London gangland's notorious illegal bookmakers - Jack Spot and Albert Dimes.
Flipside London Tours host Aidan McManus tells the tale of a fierce rivalry in street betting that sparked a knife fight leaving both seriously injured and one man disfigured.
Despite a scandalous court case to convict the guilty party, the only victim was the truth.

Flipside London TV: Rachman the Slum Landlord Builds his Empire
Perec 'Peter' Rachman was the most notorious slum landlord of the 1950s and 60s. His power in Notting Hill was legendary, but the truth is that he was one of the only landlords to rent to the incoming West Indian community in racially divisive times. Powis Square and Hedgegate Court were at the centre of his property empire, and witness to his methods of forcing out sitting working class tenants by allowing illegal gambling dens (spielers) and drinking clubs (shebeens) in his properties.
Rachman was one of a large number of landlords who charged high prices for their properties. But because he was not an old Etonian, and had not attended Sandhurst for officer training, he was easy to single out. He was a foreigner, and in these anti-EU, brexit-baiting times, his story speaks volumes about the way immigrants are portrayed.
Aidan McManus is a local tour guide and raconteur whose research into the history of the area takes him deep into the alternative written and spoken history of London. Here he looks at the myth behind the man and finds that all is not what it seems.

As time flies by, at what seems like an ever increasing rate, I thought I'd take a look back at where I played in 1977/78 when punk was the new phenomena! I originally did this as an exclusive for The International Swingers PledgeMusic campaign, but now here it is in the public domain. Sorry about the wind messing up the audio here and there.......hope you enjoy it. And thanks for shooting it Dylan White!
