12. SOUNDBITE (German) Henning Bossow, Owner of floating home:
You really notice the difference between a floating home and a conventional home when you leave the floating home. The floating home is alive. You always have the feeling that the house is alive, because the house moves a little bit, the window frame changes slightly, and then the sun's reflection in the water paints shadows on the walls. If you look out the window on a day like today when it's raining you can see raindrops falling down into the water. There are changes here all the time which bring this house to life. If you go back to living in a conventional home on the land after living in a home like this, nothing moves and it seems dead.

18. SOUNDBITE (German) Martin Foerster, Architect:
There is huge demand for living on floating homes. A lot of people want to live on the water; they love the water, and the glistening water gives people the impression of being on vacation. At the moment we can offer 12 different types of floating homes in different sizes, from 100 to 5000 square meters. We offer floating homes, cinemas, event locations and apartment houses, anything you can think of can be put on the water.

22. Set up shot Hans Peter Boltres
23. SOUNDBITE (German) Hans Peter Boltres, Head of office for city planning in Hamburg north:
Our aim is to increase the quality of life and the attraction of Hamburg. The canals where the floating homes are on were formerly routes for industrial transport. This industry doesn't exist anymore. And because the canals have such potential to offer people space for leisure and to relax, and because the canals are so well situated and connected to the city centre of Hamburg, we want to make them available for new projects. You only need ten minutes to get from the Eilbekkanal to the city centre. You can jump from your floating home into your boat and you're at the Alster (river) in a few minutes. This is first class. You can witness the transformation from an industrial society to a service society.
24. Wide shot of office of the International building exhibition (IBA)Hamburg
25. Pan of IBA building
26. Set up shot for Han Slawik
27. SOUNDBITE (German) Han Slawik, Architect:
We need a strong pontoon here; it weighs 1700 tons. And then we need a light building on it so that it is stable and doesn't shake. This building here weighs 560 tons, so one third of the weight of the pontoon. And that's the trick that keeps this construction in balance.

Hamburgteile 47 Rotherbaum

In medieval times, a dam turned the Alster river into a water reservoir to power the mills operating on its banks. This shaped the face of central Hamburg, as it is now made up of two lakes called the Außenalster (Outer Alster) and the Binnenalster (Inner Alster). From its spring outside of Hamburg, the Alster flows into the Elbe river just south of the city centre.
The Kennedy and Lombard bridges separate the Outer and Inner Alster lakes. The Inner Alster is the smaller body of the two and is facing Hamburg’s city centre. The magnificent buildings along Jungfernstieg, City Hall, the many churches and the fountain in the lake’s centre make for an impressive backdrop for every picture. Have your cameras ready after sunset: The city lights are mirrored by the water and create excellent photo opportunities.
The Outer Alster is surrounded by ancient trees, green parks and beautiful mansions of the Winterhude, St. Georg and Rothenbaum districts, which give the area a sophisticated, exquisite charm. People come there to leave the stressful city life behind for a moment and relax in the shade of the trees. In summer, the parks surrounding the lake are a great place to barbeque (a national sport), to enjoy the sun’s bliss or to go for a jog around the lake. Sporty types engage in watersports. Boats, canoes and kayaks can be hired at many spots all around the Alster. Stand-up-paddling is also a fun and highly popular activity.
In cold winters the Alster can freeze over providing an extra-large ice-skating rink for thousands of Hamburg locals.
