With its coastal hardwood hammocks and mangrove swamp communities, the site provides excellent opportunities for education and research aimed at increasing visitors' knowledge of these unique environments.

Florida Oceanographic Society is a non-profit organization founded in 1964 with the mission to inspire environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems through education, research and advocacy.
Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center is a 57-acre marine life nature center located on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, FL situated between the Indian River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Each year, the Education Department at Florida Oceanographic Society educates thousands of students from around our community and around the globe with on-site field trip programs, Virtual Field Trips, in-school outreach programs, summer camps, and special educational activities.
The Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center provides a natural learning environment for public and private groups. Centered around Florida's marine life and local coastal ecosystems, we help guests of all ages build skills that promote interpretation, understanding, and conservation of our natural resources. With easy access to both the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie River, our students quickly become aware of the important issues facing local waterways, as well as the need to become advocates and environmental stewards.

Gov. DeSantis visits Martin County to announce new water quality resource
Gov. Ron DeSantis was in Martin County Tuesday morning at the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center to announce the launching of a new online resource that will allow the public to find out current water quality numbers and projects.
The Florida Coastal Cleanup Sept. 19, 2009 Surfrider Foundation, Cocoa Beach Chapter
Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski documents the efforts of Surfrider Foundation, Cocoa Beach Chapter marine-based litter abatement project conducted on Sept. 19th, 2009 during The Florida Coastal Cleanup Day sponsored by The Ocean Conservancy.
Joanie Regan Program Coordinator for The City of Cocoa Beach Stormwater Program operated the city barge. Joanie Regan and Bob Day, Biologist with the Indian River Lagoon National Estuary Program took several volunteers out on the islands for litter abatement.
Coastal Cleanup is an international program sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy encouraging people to remove trash and debris from the world's beaches and waterways, to identify sources of debris and catalog, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution.
Last year, nearly 400,000 volunteers collected more than 6.8 million pounds of trash in 104 countries and 42 US states during the 2008 International Coastal Cleanup the world's largest volunteer effort of its kind. On September 19th, 2009 in Brevard County, Florida 1,202 volunteers collected approximately 23,365 pounds of trash along Brevard's coastlines.
