Old Swedish Church, Sanford, Florida, USA
Sanford, celebrating its 125th anniversary this year, adopted the Swedish tradition to recognize the Upsala immigrants as one of the largest ethnic groups in Sanford's early history.
The Swedes contributed to the making of Sanford long before the city was incorporated in 1877, according to joint research by the societies. Many of Sanford's early buildings and streets were constructed by Swedish labor. Later generations of Swedes became celery farmers, businessmen, and civil servants.
Last year, two Swedish descendants, Charlie Carlson and Teri Patterson, and local history researcher Christine Kinlaw-Best completed a book chronicling Sanford's Swedish heritage. The Swedish History of Seminole County is available at the Sanford and the Seminole County museums.
Many of those first immigrants came from the Uppsala region of Sweden. The late 1860s and early 1870s brought hard times for those living in the lowlands near Uppsala. Food was often scarce because farmers could not keep up with the hunger of the growing population in Stockholm and nearby communities.
The iron mining and steel industries that would provide the jobs and the labor unrest that would bring sweeping political and social changes in Sweden were still decades away.
Between 1867 and 1886, nearly 450,000 Swedes emigrated to escape harsh economic conditions in their homeland. Many came to the United States, and most went to the Midwest.
However, 150 adults, mostly carpenters, masons, painters, cabinetmakers, blacksmiths and horticulturists, founded New Upsala west of Sanford as the first and largest of five Swedish settlements in Central Florida. The first group arrived in Florida on May 30, 1871. Most were young men, in their 20s to mid-30s.
Their first jobs were at Belair, Henry Shelton Sanford's pioneer citrus groves. Oranges and Sanford's founder played major roles in the founding of the colony named for the university city northeast of the Swedish capital of Stockholm.
Sanford, a wealthy Connecticut manufacturer, lawyer and statesman, had irritated Cracker settlers by hiring black laborers to clear his land. When attacks by whites killed some of the black workers and wounded others, many fled.
Sanford, whose wife, Gertrude, had many Swedes in her family tree, sponsored Swedes to labor a year in return for their travel and living expenses. Joined by others, they founded the community of New Upsala (now, simply Upsala) near Belair.
OK, back to the grapes and Grapeville.
Sanford grew grapes at Belair, along with 140 types of citrus, pineapple, olives, figs and others fruits.
The Swedes grew grapes, too. Grape growers were prevalent in the state in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The state's oldest farm association is the Florida Grape Growers Association.
Swedes moved into the Piedmont community of the south Seminole-Apopka area in about 1877. Many of the early settlers enjoyed homemade wines they made from oranges and from the thick-skinned muscadine grapes they found growing wild in small clusters. Citrus pioneers August Gust Jackson and Olaf Larsson and his sons, Jonas and Lars, opened the first of several early commercial wineries.
Now, the exact original location of the Grapeville area of Sanford is unknown, but the small Swedish community was a neighbor to Upsala, and its early residents attended church services and social gatherings in Upsala before they built their own church. Research for the Swedish book found another Grapeville in Litchfield County, Conn., birthplace of Henry Sanford.
The Swedish book notes, The new GreeneWay expressway now cuts through the heart of the old community of Grapeville.
Copies of the book can be ordered by writing to the Sanford Museum, 520 E. First St., Sanford, FL 32771, or by calling 407-302-1000.
This book, others in the Sanford series and many more also are available at the Museum of Seminole County History at the Five Points government complex on U.S. 17-92, across from Flea World. You can check on the titles and cost by calling museum specialist Karen Jacobs at 407-321-2489 or write to the museum at 300 Bush Blvd., Sanford, FL 32773.
The St. Lucia Festival includes traditional smorgasbord foods, music, historical displays and Scandinavian-style Christmas decor. And it's not just for those with Swedish heritage. The museum is open for the festival from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Today is the last day of ticket sales for the Sanford Historic Trust's holiday tour of homes in the Historic Residential District. Tours are noon to 5 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. For information, call 407-263-4488.

RESTMORE (30 Day):

Here is the claim: 15 ft. Eastern Diamondback rattlesnake caught yesterday at the St. Augustine Outlet biggest ever caught on record. What a monster! I made a call to the St. John's County Sheriff’s office and the lady who answered the phone said it is real and happened about two months ago which would put it in September or October, 2009. I have heard of Eastern Diamond Backs being killed that were in excess of 8 feet long which is huge but this is almost twice that size. Makes you want to not go outside without a powerful flashlight at night.

Buy Fruiting Plants for Your Home Orchard / Food Forest! -Backyard Edible Landscape Options
Find the largest selection of edible plants for your urban garden! Choose between local vs online nurseries, selling grafted fruit trees, berry bushes, fruiting vines and edible ground covers.
► QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN THIS VIDEO:
What are the pros and cons of growing plants from seed vs cuttings? How long does it take a fruit seedling to mature compared to a grafted clone? How does grafting work? What are the advantages of local nurseries? How are online trees packaged and shipped? What's the difference between potted vs bare root plants? What's a good resource to help with edible landscaping design or backyard orchard care?
► RELIABLE GENETICS THAT SAVE TIME:
Can't you just plant a seed from an apple or pear to start your own fruit tree? Well, you sure can! Seedling grown trees have the most natural, undisturbed root systems. But this process does have some drawbacks. Firstly, it may take several additional years before you ever get to experience any fruit from that seedling. And once it DOES mature, it might produce fruit that is not as good as the parent plant.
Adapting plants through natural breeding is a crucial part of modern fruit cultivation. And many commercial growers are actively developing new and improved varieties. But for us as consumers, we are often limited on time and space. Thus, it is most advantageous to buy cloned varieties from established nurseries. These are often grafted onto hardy root stocks, using mature fruiting wood. That means that within just one year you might be enjoying fruit from your new tree!
► LOCAL VS ONLINE VENDORS:
Obviously, it can be quite convenient to just drive into a local nursery and pick up a few plants. You don't have to pay for shipping costs. You get to hand pick your exact plant. And it's more likely that you'll be choosing from varieties that are adapted to grow in your local area.
Online nurseries are very good options though. They give you even more choices. You'll be able to select from a nearly endless variety of apples, peaches, pears and so on. And you'll also have access to other types of plants that are missing from your local box store. Goumis, sea berries, hardy kiwis, persimmons, jujubes and aronia. If you want them, you might need to look online!
► ONLINE EDIBLE PLANT NURSERIES:
• RaintreeNursery.com (Washington)
Amazing selection of plants you've never heard of, including west coast natives. A good balance between selection and price. My preferred online plant seller.

• BayLaurelNursery.com (California)
Online seller of Dave Wilson's Nursery fruit trees. Huge selection of grafted stone fruits, with multiple root stock options. I've purchased my bare root peaches, apricots & plums from them. Even a 4-in-1 grafted variety! Try to pre-order between August to December for shipping in the next year's season.
• EdibleLandscaping.com (Virginia)
Broad selection of edible plants, including some uncommon varieties. Shipping is available year round, although stock fluctuates. I got a very nice potted Asian Persimmon grafted on an American Persimmon root stock.
• JustFruitsandExotics.com (Florida)
Lots of unique fruiting plants, including an impressive selection of persimmons. My mother-in-law's Asian Persimmon came from this vendor.
• OneGreenWorld.com (Oregon)
Large selection, including some remarkable west coast natives. In years past, I've received good quality plants after ordering multiple plants from them.

As weather settles in from a blustery winter-spring, to a hot & dry summer pattern, it seemed like the appropriate time for you, our viewers to see what all the talk was about, regarding our South Florida landscape. What I moved to nearly 27 years ago and what I (and now Brad and I,) tend could not be more different! We are a beacon of what tropical living can be, with a lot of sand, organic material, rock for drainage, over 2500 assorted plants: from oaks and palms of all sorts, to a variety of fruiting trees, like mangoes, avocados, guavas, jaboticabas, lychee, rambutan, longan, all citrus varieties, monsteras, bananas, jackfruit, noni fruit, soursop, illimas, Barbados cherries, coconuts (of course!) feijoas, canistel, cashew, allspice, mountain apple, betel nuts, peanut butter fruit, annatto, potato tree, bamboo, rollinia, mangosteen, cinnamon, tamarind, nutmeg, breadfruit, pomagranate, and Mysore raspberries!! Enough to satisfy the most discriminating of tastebuds. Now all the trees need is time, rain, warmth, and TLC of all sorts. We hope that you enjoy this multi-segmented landscape tour. You will share in the botanical beauty that we enjoy every day! WELCOME to our world...@Life Under The Palm Trees. Mahalo, and enjoy! Paul. As I always say: Be good to yourself! You are the best friend you will EVER know!
