Tea made from Fireweed grows more popular in Russia
(19 Aug 2017) LEADIN
The pink blooms of the fireweed plant are a common sight across the northern hemisphere at this time of year.
But in Russia, the plant is more than a pretty flower - it's used to produce a traditional kind of tea, which locals say is growing in popularity.
STORYLINE:
The pink flowers of the fireweed plant blow in the breeze on the banks of the Vetluga river.
The Nizhny Novgorod region where the river flows has become a hotbed for the wild plant, which flourishes in damp soil.
Fireweed grows across the northern hemisphere - in the UK it's known as rosebay willowherb - but here in Russia it's harvested and turned into tea.
Historically the records show that fireweed is a Russian national treasure, and it has been exported for many years, and even centuries, explains fireweed tea producer, Elena Grigorenko.
The bright pink flower heads signify the blooming period for fireweed.
This year's harvest has been particularly fruitful, due to rainy weather loved by this resilient plant.
The fireweed harvesting process may appear laborious but actually it doesn't take too much time, the women say.
A large bag can be filled with the leaves in just a few minutes.
Workers run their hands up the stem of the plant to release the leaves, before bagging, rolling and drying them.
We crush them a little bit so they are a bit more lighter, softer, and then we start to make these rolls, explains fireweed tea producer Olga Spirina.
We do a few forceful movements so that we squeeze out the juice.
Once the pickers have rolled the leaves they move onto the drying process.
After our fireweed has been resting in a warm, dark place for a few days, it becomes like this. Dark. Here are our rolls, they have become brown in colour and smell like prunes, with an unbearably sweet smell. This means that the process, generally speaking, has finished, explains Grigorenko.
Locals advise amateurs not to attempt to harvest Fireweed themselves as it can easily be confused with other weeds.
Many consumers are choosing fireweed over other teas because they believe in its medicinal properties and some shops even specialise in it.
Here at this shop in the Nizhny Novgorod region, barista and tea-maker Elena Kruglova says the tea's popularity is booming.
Fireweed is good for cold weather as it warms very well, and also when it's hot outside, because you can also drink it cold, it quenches thirst very well. Therefore, it is very popular with us.
In Moscow, an outlet of the international tea chain Mlesna is selling fireweed tea in Russia's most famous department store, GUM, on Red Square.
Shopkeeper Tatiana Krapileva says fireweed tea is growing in popularity because of its purported health benefits.
Fireweed has amazing medicinal properties - it energises you in the morning and calms you down in the evening, she says.
Fireweed can be bought on its own, or mixed with other herbs and berries like cranberries or buckthorn.
Krapileva says it is mainly Russians who buy it in her store, but she's gradually starting to see more interest from foreign tourists too.

Text_1_Diveyevo monastery prepares for Easter (TV-report, 2014)
Duration 3:50
A journalist spends a week before Easter in Diveyevo, the largest Russian monastery for women.
Morning prayers last almost 4 hours. Around 11 a.m. sisters leave the church, they’re already smiling and talking: the day can be started.
They have a quick meal and go to their ‘obediences.’ It’s what is called ‘work’ in the world. Each sister has some work, e.g. cleaning up the temple, cooking meals or meeting pilgrims. But on these days 460 of Diveevo sisters have only one main thing - to prepare for Easter.
This smiling young woman is mother Ioasafa. And this is her little culinary factory. In a tiny kitchen, sisters and their helpers turn cakes into beautiful presents. They will decorate almost 500 handmade cakes: for the sisters, for gifts and for sale.
Mother Ioasafa’s preparing to celebrate her 17th Easter at the monastery. She came here right after finishing school. Since childhood, she knew that she’d devote her life to the church. One day she came here with her mum my mother and felt that it was her place.
‘I asked the elder, father Kirill Pavlov. He said that I needed to stay in that place, but before that I had to live at home for some time and get a passport. Of course, I immediately started to experience various temptations. The Enemy prevented my coming to the monastery in every way. He didn’t want me to…,’ - says the nun.
But even in the monastery the path to God isn’t easy. You have to earn the right to become a nun. First you’re a novice candidate, then a novice, then an inokinya, and only after that you can be allowed to take the vows.
‘I want to say hello!’ mother Siluana is joking, causing laughter in the company. She teaches me to properly spread the glaze and wonders how the story with Pussy Riot ended in Moscow.
All this doesn’t seem like narrow-minded ideas about the monastery. But Diveevo sisters have never been isolated from the outside world.
To Diveevo monastery pilgrims travel by buses. Orthodox people believe that this place is an earthly lot of the Virgin.
Between morning and evening services it’s necessary to prepare almost 3,000 eggs for Easter. Onion peels have been collected since winter. It's no joke - 6 bags!
‘We’re a little tired and probably happy as it’s still the end of the Lent.’ At other times, mother Silvana is an auditor, there’s such a job here. Someone has to audit numerous monastic shops. Who better than her can do it, she’s a former accountant. ‘The Lord allows so that a person can easily renounce everything: status in the world, favourite job, family.’
Olga has a diploma of the Swiss Association of florists and a flower shop in Moscow. But several times a year she leaves everything and goes to the Nizhny Novgorod region to decorate Diveevo for the next holiday. About 20 same-minded people came with her, they all arrived from the capital.
‘Nowadays our job bosses understand that it’s not just that you go somewhere to relax, but it's a really necessary thing, and they make advances.’ Olya works in a travel agency as a middle manager, like almost everyone here: without much experience in floral design, but with a great desire to help.
Good Friday is the saddest day of Holy Week. Sisters fast strictly - till the end of Evening prayers it’s forbidden to eat. They pray a lot, and talk only if it’s really necessary. It seems that only the sister-photographer remembers about the world and quickly takes photos.
It’s all difficult to understand, but we got used to it after several days in a monastery. Instead of ‘Hello’ they say ‘bless me,’ instead of ‘Thank you’ they say ‘God save you,’ instead of ‘You’re welcome’ they say ‘To the glory of God.’ In such a place many doors will always be closed for a worldly person.

Suzdal, Golden Ring of Russia, 4K
The ancient town of Suzdal, the main town of the ancient Russian principality in the 12th-13th centuries, is located in the centre of the European part of Russia, some 200 km east of Moscow, 30 km from Vladimir. The White Monuments of Suzdal are outstanding examples of ancient Russian architecture. These white-stone structures is a unique phenomenon, incorporating the best work of creative master-minds and presenting an amazing synthesis of architecture and monumental art. The architecture Suzdal is an outstanding example of the development and perfection of architectural shapes and building techniques which formed a unique school of architecture. This influential style began and achieved its greatest expression here and illustrates the most important stage of human history and culture in the North-East Rus. Widely used as an example for subsequent construction throughout Russian history, they set a standard as a benchmark of architectural beauty and expressiveness of Russian ecclesiastical architecture. In Suzdal, the Kremlin (fortress) is surrounded by earthen ramparts. Within, dominating the whole town, stands the Cathedral of the Nativity, built in the 13th century and reconstructed in the 16th century, with its five-domed roof and 13th-century Golden Doors. Important monuments in the posad (civil settlement) include several cubic churches of the 16th and 17th centuries, such as the Convent of the Deposition of the Holy Robe and the Refectory Church of the Assumption, and several monasteries. The most important of the latter is the Monastery of Our Saviour and St Euthymius, founded in 1352. Some of the monuments are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
