Record Blueberry Crop Projected
FAIRVIEW, N.C. -- The state department of agriculture says a record crop could be in store for blueberry growers this year.
They credit the dry weather for the prospected high yields.
Local farmers say they typically begin to harvest their blueberry crop around mid-June. Annie Louise Perkinson at Flying Cloud Farm in Fairview says a late frost is a major concern, but fortunately this year that wasn't the case.
We didn't get a late frost, that sometimes can kill the blossoms, Perkinson said. It was sort of a gradual warm up and so there's just tons of berries and they look like they're going to do really well.
North Carolina is the seventh largest producer of blueberries in the nation. About 75 percent of the state's crop is sold to fresh markets like farmers markets and roadside stands.
