[Trailer] Fizzics Brewers Spotlight - Flying Fish Brewing Company
For the next stop on our Brewers Spotlight tour we visited Flying Fish Brewing Company in Somerdale, New Jersey. Flying Fish, founded in 1995, was the first microbrewery to open in South Jersey and is now the largest of all 70+ craft breweries in the state. They offer a wide range of fresh ales year round along with seasonal specialties. Their beers have accumulated a total of 10 Great American Beer Festival awards -- more than any other New Jersey brewery. Their new state-of-the-art facility is also the most sustainable in the region and allows them to brew beer in the most environmentally friendly way possible. Stop by the tasting room Wednesday- Sunday to try one of 15 beers on tap including weekly one-offs and barrel aged beers. Cheers!

The Bayshore, Oysters & Beer
Flying Fish Brewing in Cherry Hill, NJ, releases another beer in its award-winning Exit Series lineup, this time an oyster stout that salutes Exit 1 of the Garden State's world renowned toll road and doffs a hat to the culture that is synonymous with the Delaware Bay.
The video, The Bayshore, Oysters & Beer, outlines Flying Fish's embracing of its home state and examines oyster stout as a beer style, while sketching a past-to-present picture of New Jersey's oyster industry, once a powerhouse along the Delaware Bayshore that provided a way of life across South Jersey.

Jamisons Beer Review Flying Fish Exit 4 American Triple
Jamisons Beer Review Flying Fish Exit 4 American Trippel. You are holding the inaugural release in a multi-year brewing experiment-to brew a series of beers as diverse as the great state of New Jersey. Our theme is the state-long artery that connects us. Each beer will focus on the unique aspect of an individual exit, whether an ingredient or event. The journey begins at Exit 4- right up the street from the Flying Fish brewery. As one of the first craft brewers to embrace Belgian-style beers, we've chosen to start with a Belgian trippel, finished with plenty of American hops. Note the hazy golden hue and the aroma of citrus with hints of banana and clove. Then taste the Belgian malt flavors and a subdued bitterness in the finish. Bottle conditioned, this beer will develop as it ages. Enjoy.
Dead zone: Low-oxygen 'dead zone' the size of Jersey recorded in the Gulf of Mexico - TomoNews
GULF OF MEXICO — Low oxygen areas appear yearly off the coast of Louisiana, but 2017's dead zone is reportedly the largest ever recorded since 1985.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, this year's dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico measures 8,776 square miles, which is roughly the size of New Jersey.
The 2002 dead zone covered nearly 8,500 square miles, but the past five years have seen the area cover no more than an area of 6,000 square miles.
Dead zones are caused by nitrogen and phosphorous, which are used as crop nutrients by farmers and washed into waterways by rain.
Unusually heavy rains in the midwest are believed to have washed away more nutrients from U.S. farmlands than usual, sending them downstream via the Mississippi River.
Nitrogen and phosphorous stimulate massive algal growth in the Gulf that eventually sinks to the bottom and decomposes.
This decomposition process uses up the oxygen in the water, which renders the area uninhabitable for marine creatures.
Dead zones are usually temporary, dissipating during fall and winter. But the effects of low-oxygen or hypoxic zones on certain species can be permanent, with studies showing it affects fish reproduction and stunts shrimp growth.
Setting a federal limit on the use of crop nutrients may be one possible solution, but could prove challenging since it will need to be implemented in more than 25 states, reports NBC.
