A Day in Key West Duval St
A Day in Key West Duval St
Duval Street was designated a “Great Street” in 2012 by the American Planning Association.[2] The beautiful Bahamian and Spanish influenced Victorian Mansions of Duval Street have been well preserved through local preservation efforts starting in the 1960s. On the Atlantic Ocean end of Duval Street there is a mix of early Key West Victorian mansions and bungalows dotting the neighborhood. Art galleries, boutiques, inns and Bodega’s line the wide sidewalks. Although this end of Duval is more residential and less filled with tourists, the sidewalks still bustle with activity.
One block west of the southern terminus of Duval Street is the buoy marker for the southernmost point in the United States; it is close to the southernmost house, a Victorian mansion built in 1896. A favorite of both Harry S. Truman and author Ernest Hemingway, the building was restored to its formal beauty and opulence with a $3 million renovation in 1996.[citation needed]
Duval Street well represents the cultural influence of Key West’s proximity and cultural ties to Cuba. Many Cubans immigrated to the area beginning in the late 1860s. At one time, the many cigar stores on Duval gave the city the moniker “Cigar City USA.” There are many pleasant outdoor cafes to enjoy another Cubano influenced product, “Cuban Coffee”, which is espresso made from roasted Cuban Coffee beans with a heavy dose of sugar.
At the north end, tourists from the cruise ships that dock at the Margaritaville Resort & Marina, Mole pier or Mallory Square are often seen traversing Duval Street's many shops [1] in the afternoon looking for souvenir trinkets and cheap T-shirts. BEWARE the streets are congested with Pedi cabs, trollies, bikes, mopeds, cars, and the Conch Train all adding to the touristy feel of this heavily visited end of Duval.
Near the northern end of the street is Mallory Square. Historic Mallory Square is the center of Key West’s waterfront. The City of Key West and Duval Street share their beginning along this deep harbor waterfront.
On certain nights, the gulf shores of Duval Street often vibrate with a carnival like atmosphere that lasts until dawn and beyond. In fact, the ritual has a name known to tourists and residents as the “Duval Pub Crawl.” Duval is the location of many famous restaurants and bars, including Sloppy Joe's, Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, which is the original, Fogarty's Restaurant, Bar and Bakery, The Flying Monkeys Bar, The Bull and Whistle, Rick's Cafe and Irish Kevin's bar, Bourbon Street Pub and Aqua. Tour outlets book the “Duval Pub Crawl” activity and provide knowledgeable guidance for the tourist wishing to visit and imbibe at the famous drinking establishments, for a fee.
A 1967 National Park Service survey of Historic American Buildings designated 18 buildings as historic. A full six blocks were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Further protection for this historically significant street has been created through the City’s, “Historic Architecture Guidelines,” approved in 2000, which sets standards for construction on Duval Street. from

DJI OSMO RIDES THROUGH KEY WEST FLORIDA WITH NARRATION
This video was made in Key West Florida during Spring Break 2016. I love visiting Key West and recommend that anyone that can go, should go. Once there, you will want to find Duval Street as that is where the party is at night. The people of Key West are very friendly and we always have a great time while visiting.
Duval Street (/ˈduvəhl/) is a famous downtown commercial zoned street in Key West, Florida, running north and south from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean. From shore to shore, the street is just over 1.25 miles in length. It is named for William Pope Duval, the first territorial governor of Florida.

Key West is an island in the Straits of Florida on the North American continent, at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys. The island is about 90 miles (140 km) from Cuba.
Key West is politically within the limits of the city of Key West, Monroe County, Florida, United States. The city also occupies portions of nearby islands.
The island is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide, with a total land mass of 4.2 square miles (11 km2).[1] Duval Street, its famous main street, is a mere 1.1 miles (1.8 km) in length in its 14-block crossing from the Gulf of Mexico to the Florida Straits/Atlantic Ocean. In the late 1950s, many of the large salt ponds on the eastern side were filled in, nearly doubling the original land mass of the island. The island is 3,370 acres (13.6 km2) in area.[2]

It's Not All Beastly In The Animal Kingdom - Hilarious Images Show The Biggest Smiles In Animals
Hyenas are probably best known for their braying laugh but it seems like the whole of the animal kingdom shares a sense of humour, if these images are anything to go by.
A hilarious collection of pictures captured by photographers around the world suggests that everything from gorillas and raccoons to sharks and parrotfish enjoys a good joke.
Even the blobfish, which has been widely thought of as the world's most miserable looking creature, tries to crack a smile.
What's so funny? This raccoon looks like he has just heard the punchline of a joke. Maybe he is a bit of a raccoonteur.
If there is one animal you probably don't want to see smile it's a shark. The grin of this lemon shark reveals two rows of terrifying teeth. But there have only been a handful of attacks recorded on humans by lemon sharks.
Is it just me or does this chap look familiar? The creases on the face of this macaque, from the Huangshan Mountains in China, look distinctly like laughter lines.
Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs are not known as the cleanest of animals so this porker is bound to be chuckling at a dirty joke.
This seal at the Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, California appears to be cracking up about something deeply amusing.
This fish looks like an extra from a Disney movie as it swims near Key West in Florida. But then living off the coast of Florida doesn't sound such a bad life, as long there are no sharks about.
What do you get a donkey with a fool? A big ass! This is a burro, a breed of wild donkey found in Spain and also, like this one, in the United States (pictured) and Latin America.
This creature has got to be Mother Nature's best gag. It is the theridion grallator, better known as the Hawaiian Happy Face Spider. Scientists can find no evolutionary reason for the bizarre patterns on the little critter's abdomen.
Never play cards with a cheetah because they will always have the last laugh. This cheetah cub at the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania appears to be having a good giggle at our expense.
Otis the hippo is a good natured fellow. He lives in a large pool at San Diego Zoo, one of the world's best, and has fathered several calves with his partner, Funani. So it's no surprise that he is smiling.
That tickles! Kituba the baby gorilla is in fits of laughter as he plays with his mum, Lena, at Dublin Zoo.
This is the closest the blobfish ever comes to a smile. In 2013 the blobfish was voted the world's ugliest animal. Thankfully blobfish, which live in the sea off the coast of Australia, don't have ears...or feelings.
Always look on the bright side of life. That is definitely the case with this Sulawesi crested black macaque. They are one of the most endangered species in Indonesia .
This caracal seems to be smiling at the camera. Caracals are widespread in Africa and the Middle East and were revered by the Ancient Egyptians. They have also been bred in captivity.
This snowy owl is having a rare old time at the Olympic National Park in Washington state in the US.
Put those teeth away! This gurning horse is in a very good mood, possibly because the sun has just come out.
This baby zebra is game for a laugh. This image was snapped at the Busch Gardens safari park in Tampa, Florida.
This rabbit seems to be full of the joys of life. This image was captured by a photographer in the Netherlands where, like Britain, rabbits are a common sight.
From a smirking seal to a giggling gorilla, series of funny pictures prove it's not all beastly in the animal kingdom. This set of photographs shows a range of animals, from fish to zebras, breaking out their best smiles. Hyenas are best known for their laugh but it seems that they are not the only comedy creatures. One of the most bizarre images is of the Hawaiian happy face spider, so called because of a pattern on its back. Even the blobfish, considered the world's most miserable-looking creature, does its best to crack a smile. Wild smiles as the animal kingdom grins to greet the coming summer.
