As much as you might think I live in the mountains, I'm at home with our family in the suburbs quite a bit!! Our new son, Levi, is 3 weeks old and everybody was tired of being penned up in the house. We drove 35 minutes down to Focus On The Family in Colorado Springs to release some energy & to have some fun together.
Thanks for watching! I'll continue to do these vlogs from time to time. God willing I'll get a few wild game cooking videos in here over the next few weeks as well :) I should also have some fishing, camping, and more outdoor videos coming soon too!

Now is an exciting time for the deaf community, with the recent celebration of ADA’s 26th anniversary and Senator Harkin’s speech at the Democratic National Convention. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is prioritizing their focus to end language and cultural deprivation, and there is tremendous support for an innovative space for deaf educators and supporters at the National Deaf Education Conference (NDEC).
This conference focuses on teaching practices and will become a forum to discuss new ideas that are happening in the classroom! It’s where educators of deaf and hard of hearing children, teacher assistants, educational interpreters and many more can come together to showcase their work and share ideas, collaborate with colleagues to generate new approaches, and learn incredible things!
During the conference that took place alongside NAD 2016 conference in Phoenix, Arizona, DTV News had the opportunity to interview the conference co-chairs, Dr. Patrick Graham, who teaches at Western Oregon University and Tawny Holmes, an Education Policy Counsel for NAD.
From my understanding, this is the first time hosting this conference in conjunction with NAD. How exciting! NDEC certainly adds a whole new element to the NAD conference. So if you don’t mind, could you explain the purpose behind setting up this conference?
Sure, both Tawny and I were sitting together at the Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) conference in Jacksonville, Florida two years ago. While we were there, many people approached us expressing sentiments and a need for a deaf education conference. A space where deaf educators can gather to brainstorm, exchange ideas and collaborate together. This led to both Tawny and I discussing why this is important. From there we reached out to the National Association of the Deaf and interestingly, Chris Wagner, explained that back in 1880 NAD was originally founded with a focus on deaf education as a result of the Milan conference.
I would like to add, with Patrick’s focus on the deaf education prep program, he has seen and met a lot of individuals on a community level whereas my job requires me to travel across the country visiting different schools, whether they are mainstreamed programs or schools for the Deaf. I’ve had the privilege to learn and see firsthand what different schools are doing, including different conferences, all of which I would often share on instagram- @deafeducation. As a result, I had a lot of people asking for more information. It wasn’t really my place, nor did I have all of the answers. We have a lot of incredible teachers out there doing amazing work within their classrooms and I want to be able to bring all that to one place. Not only that, I also wanted to make sure that mainstreamed programs are not excluded. We have a lot of great conferences designed specifically for deaf schools but not so much for mainstream programs. On a state level there may be some but they are not run by Deaf people. So our goal is to bring all these different components together in order to make this happen.
So, well, honestly I’m a bit surprised that there hasn’t been anything like this until now.
Well, there are many different kinds of deaf education conferences- CEASD for administrators and ACE-DHH, that’s for college program prep, are a few. There is also CAID, the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf, but lately their focus has been mainly college educators which is not our goal here. A unique aspect of NDEC is that not only do we invite teachers to provide workshops, we welcome the general deaf community who support education to participate as well. Everyone is here in one space. There are a lot of great conferences out there with very specific areas of focus, and here we strive to bring everyone together- teachers; administrators, school counselors, psychologists, audiologists, speech therapists, ASL specialists...everyone! And all parents and family members are welcome! That’s what makes this conference unique.

The Dark Side of Religion in Christian America: Chris Hedges on American Fascists (2007)
One early effort to institutionalize the Christian right as a politically active social movement began in 1974 when Dr. Robert Grant, an early movement leader, founded American Christian Cause to advocate Christian moral teachings in Southern California. More:
Concerned that Christians overwhelmingly voted in favor of President Jimmy Carter in 1976, Grant expanded his movement and founded Christian Voice to mobilize Christian voters in favor of candidates who share their socially conservative values.
In the late 1980s Pat Robertson founded the Christian Coalition, building from his 1988 presidential run, with Republican activist Ralph Reed, who became the spokesman for the Coalition. In 1992, the national Christian Coalition, Inc., headquartered in Virginia Beach, Virginia, began producing voter guides, which it distributed to conservative Christian churches. Under the leadership of Reed and Robertson, the Coalition quickly became the most prominent voice in the conservative Christian movement, its influence culminating with an effort to support the election of a conservative Christian to the presidency in 1996. In addition, they have talked about attempting to intersperse the traditional moral issues associated with the Christian right into a broader message that emphasizes other political issues, such as healthcare, the economy, education and crime.[24]

Political activists worked within the Republican party locally and nationally to influence party platforms and nominations.[25] More recently Dr. James Dobson's group Focus on the Family, based in Colorado Springs, and the Family Research Council in Washington D.C. have gained enormous clout among Republican lawmakers. While strongly advocating for these moral issues, Dobson himself is more wary of the political spectrum and much of the resources of his group are devoted to other aims such as media.[26] However, as a private citizen, Dobson has stated his opinion on presidential elections; on February 5, 2008, Dobson issued a statement regarding the 2008 presidential election and his strong disappointment with the Republican party's candidates.[27]
In an essay written in 1996, Ralph Reed argued against the moral absolutist tone of Christian right leaders, arguing for the Republican Party Platform to stress the moral dimension of abortion rather than placing emphasis on overturning Roe v. Wade. Reed believes that pragmatism is the best way to advocate for the Christian right.
The Christian right believes that separation of church and state is not explicit in the American Constitution, believing instead that such separation is a creation of what it claims are activist judges in the judicial system.[59][60][61] In the United States, the Christian right often supports their claims by asserting that the country was founded by Christians as a Christian Nation.[62][63] Members of the Christian right take the position that the Establishment Clause bars the federal government from establishing or sponsoring a state church (e.g. the Church of England), but does not prevent the government from acknowledging religion. The Christian right points out that the term separation of church and state is derived from a letter written by Thomas Jefferson, not from the Constitution itself.[64][65][66] Furthermore, the Alliance Defense Fund takes the view that the concept of separation of church and state has been utilized by the American Civil Liberties Union and its allies to inhibit public acknowledgment of Christianity and restrict the religious freedoms of Christians.[67]
Thus, Christian right leaders have argued that the Establishment Clause does not prohibit the display of religion in the public sphere. Leaders therefore believe that public institutions should be allowed to display the Ten Commandments. This interpretation has been repeatedly rejected by the courts, which have found that such displays violate the Establishment Clause. Public officials though are prohibited from using their authority in which the primary effect is advancing or prohibiting religion, according to the Lemon Supreme Court test, and there cannot be an excessive entanglement with religion and the government.[68] Some, such as Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, argue that the First Amendment, which specifically restricts Congress, applies only to the Congress and not the states. This position rejects the incorporation of the Bill of Rights.[69]
Generally, the Christian right supports the presence of religious institutions within government and the public sphere, and advocates for fewer restrictions on government funding for religious charities and schools.

Cassandra Young is the Legislative Director for Emanuel Cleaver (MO-05). She first started in the District office focusing on Immigration, Justice, Postal, and Homeland Security casework matters. Cassandra then pursued an MPA (Master's in Public Administration, emphasis: policy) through the prestigious KU MPA program and completed the program in two academic years while working full-time. In the spring of 2008, Cassandra was promoted to Senior Legislative Assistant handling the Congressman's primary Committee Assignment, House Financial Services. Cassandra graduated from the University of Kansas with a dual B.A. in English (Honors) and Women's Studies.
Cristina Antelo (J.D.)
Cristina Antelo handles a diverse range of legislative, regulatory and policy issues before Congress and the executive branch for the Podesta Group. Prior to joining the Podesta Group, Cristina worked with the government affairs practice of a Washington, DC, law firm and was an investment banker at Goldman Sachs & Co for several years. Cristina was a Legal Fellow on the Senate Democratic Steering Committee chaired by former Sens. Hillary Clinton and Tom Daschle, where she focused her work on Latino outreach and constituent issues. Cristina is a founding member and Vice President of the Hispanic Lobbying Association and serves on the board of the Hispanic Bar Association of DC Foundation. Cristina also worked for the Senate and is a CHCI alumni.
Irene Lin (M.P.P.)
Irene Lin is a Legislative Assistant for Representative Betty McCollum (MN-04). She handles agriculture, environment and energy issues. Previously she was at the Department of Labor and the National Family Farm Coalition. She has also worked as a communications director for Stender for Congress and as the research and policy director on Claire McCaskill's 2006 Senate campaign. In 2005, she was a congressional fellow for the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee. She has an B.A. from Amherst College and M.P.P from Johns Hopkins University's Institute for Policy Studies.

J. Saleh Williams is a Legislative Assistant for Congressman Meeks (NY-06). His policy coverage focuses on education and homeland security. Along with his policy duties, J. is the President of the Congressional Muslim Staffers Association (CMSA). She is a founding member of the New Latino Movement, a network of over 1,000 supporters in 30+ states helping to engage, train, empower and connect young progressive Latino community organizers. Those seeking to get on the river for the first time or those looking to get their white water season off to a serene start, should consider rivers we would classify as “milder” options. These rivers typically have the Class I “moving water” to comfortably float down the river, some Class II “splashes” that get your legs wet just over the side of the boat, and potentially some Class III “wet and fun” that get you soaked head to toe! This is a great way to experience white water rafting in Colorado without getting in over your head. A mild option we provide in Colorado is the Lower Animas in Durango:

These usually provide Class I “moving water”, Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, and even some Class IV “big drops” which jump start your heart as you paddle through exciting whitewater. These rivers will keep you excited while you are able to take in some incredible scenery. These rivers can be more technical than the milder options, and they usually require a little more work as the guests must be willing to paddle. The payoff is very much worth it! The Upper Piedra River near Pagosa Springs is a great intermediate option:
Looking for the ultimate adventure that will make the hair on your arms stand up and your heart pump quickly? Then jump on the wild options of white water rafting in Colorado! The two rivers in Colorado we offer that we classify as high adventure are the Lower Piedra in Pagosa Springs and the Upper Animas in the Silverton area. The Upper Animas at high water, many consider to be the most difficult commercially run trip in the United States! Both of these areas provide Class II “splashes”, Class III “wet and fun”, Class IV “big drops” and Class V rapids that will get your adrenaline pumping and often need to be portaged. Both rivers you must be 16 years old and up and also in good health and physically fit. At Mild to Wild Rafting and Jeep Tours, we also take extra precautions on these rivers such as smaller guest to guide customer ratios, guides with more river miles than required by the state with trip leaders averaging 5,000 river miles for the Upper Animas, and have extra certifications such as wilderness safety.
