Slovak Food Review - 5 Things to try in Bratislava, Slovakia
Join us in Bratislava, Slovakia as we sample Slovak food for the first time in this review of traditional Slovakian dishes at Prašná Bašta restaurant in the old town. Wanting to sample as much traditional Slovak cuisine as we possibly could we ordered an appetizer, two mains and a dessert to share along with some local produced wines. The meal itself was outstanding. Everything we had was delicious but we kind of made the mistake of ordering two many hearty and filling things to share when we probably could have swapped in a lighter appetizer for example. Regardless, it was a memorable meal and we'd highly recommend you try Slovak food whenever you get a chance:
1) Slovak Wine - André and Cabernet Sauvignon (both dry reds)
2) Slovak Appetizer - Palacinka Hortobágyi (Pancake with shredded chicken and cream sauce)
3) Slovak main dish #1 - Bryndzové Halušky (Potato gnocchi with Slovak sheep cheese and bacon squares)
4) Slovak main dish #2 - Bravčová Panenka (pork and beef tenderloin with paprika in potato and zucchini pancake)
5) Slovak dessert - Somló (apple and whipped cream dessert)

Slovak Food Review - 5 Things to try in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Video Transcript:
Hey guys. From Bratislava. It is lunchtime. Yes. And we've brought our appetites. So hungry! I didn't have a big breakfast so I have brought my appetite today. And we're going to be trying Slovak food for the first time. So this is an exciting moment for us.
So we made it to the restaurant (Prašná Bašta) and it feels like we're in this little cave. We're underground and it is so cozy and yeah. It is just dimly lit. It is not too busy so we've already placed our order and hopefully the food will be here soon because I'm so hungry.
Okay so Sam and I both got red wines. And they're both from Slovakia so I got the Cabernet Sauvignon and you got one called Andre.
Alright so the first dish has shown up at the table and it looks nothing like what we were expecting so we're kind of like wooh which one is this? I'm guessing it is the appetizer which I think was called palacinka hortobágyi or something like that. And it is meant to be potato pancakes with chicken in a cream sauce. And I mean this looks creamy. It does look creamy. But um I was expecting like a white cream sauce.
My main is here and I went for a traditional Slovak dish. I can't pronounce the name (Bryndzové Halušky) it is a little too complicated for me but basically it is a potato gnocchi made with Slovak sheep's cheese and it also has some bacon on top.
Okay and Sam ordered himself some kind of stuffed potato zucchini pancake. It looks so good. I've just got to show you guys how big this is. My hand for comparison. Like this is big. It is massive. It is massive. It is massive. So do you want to tell us what is in there. So inside we have pork and beef tenderloin in a paprika sauce.
Like this is our first introduction to you know Slovak cuisine and I'm saying I'm loving it so far.
This is actually not a Slovak dessert. We ordered Hungarian dessert because Sam thought it looked really appetizing. It is called Somlo.
Somlo. We had this when we were in Budapest.
Time for price point. So that was 35 Euros. That included two glasses of wine. One appetizer. Two mains and a dessert to share. So yeah, it wasn't a cheap meal but we knew that going in. We wanted something that was really good quality and we sure got that here. Portions were generous too and just everything was delicious. There wasn't anything that we ordered that we didn't love. So highly highly recommend this place and what a fantastic introduction to Slovak food I have to say. And now we need a siesta. Bye guys.
This is part of our Travel in Slovakia video series showcasing Slovak food (Slovakian food), Slovak culture (Slovakian culture) and Slovak cuisine (Slovakian cuisine).

Eating Slovak food + Walking tour of Bratislava
We only had a day to spend in Bratislava so we did our go-to combination of a walking tour and trying local food. We fell in love with the quaint city and learnt some amazing facts on the tour.
We recommend the restaurant we went to (we're still thinking about that soup!).

Trying Slovak Food | What I Ate in Bratislava, Slovakia
For me, one of the best parts of travelling to new places is trying new foods. Not only does it tell you a lot about a place, but it can be unforgettably delicious. The food I tried in Bratislava, Slovakia did not disappoint.

Is Bratislava, Slovakia Worth Visiting?:
How Much Is It To Stay In Bratislava?:
Visiting the Bratislava Christmas Market:
We saw a cheese vending machine – that was a first! It’s at the bus station so people can grab something for the road. It looks like a little log cabin and pictures a man tending his animals. Very pastoral! Inside there are different kinds of traditional Slovak cheese like smoked cheese and garlic and paprika cheese. There are also other dairy products like yogurt. I love vending machines and all the things you can find in them around the world.
We really wanted to try traditional Slovak food so we went to Kláštorný Pivovar (Monastic Brewery), a brewery where you can see the beer being made. I got to try Kofola and there’s a lot of history wrapped up in this sweet, carbonated beverage. Back when Slovakia and the Czech Republic were Czechoslovakia, Kofola became extremely popular because similar drinks like Coke and Pepsi were not generally available. Kofola is still super popular today (I’d say still more than those competitors) and you can find it everywhere. The main reason we went to the brewery was because we were tipped off that they bake their own bread bowls in which to serve Slovak garlic cream soup. They keep the top of the bread on like a little top so the soup stays nice and hot. It was topped with gooey cheese and tasted so comforting after walking around in the cold all day. We also ordered Slovak National dumplings which are little potato dumplings with sheep cheese and bacon. Marc and I shared a platter of sausage served with mustard and horseradish sauce and it was bursting with mildly spicy flavour that also warmed us up.
You know when it’s really cold out and you walk by a place and it looks so warm and welcoming that it draws you in? That’s what happened at a place called Škodovka. The name of this café comes from the Czech car manufacturer Skoda and you can see a bright yellow Skoda car inside. The rest of the interior feels like walking into someone’s living room in the 1960s. Marc had a tea with honey and lemon which came with a cute lemon squeezer. I wanted hot chocolate but couldn’t decide between white and dark so the waiter made me one with both – so nice! We also tried Slovak snack food which was bread rolls stuffed with what tasted like tuna salad.
On our way out of Bratislava, we stopped at a cute restaurant called Café Verne. It’s named after Jules Verne who spent time in the area. The décor was vintage and cozy. We shared a bottle of Kofola (beverages taste better in glass bottles, right!?) and I ordered goulash with dumplings while Marc had vegetable risotto. We were obviously craving comfort foods.
I’d love to know: what are your favourite Slovak foods?

Delicious Bratislava - Food Tour
We are looking forward to getting to know you! You, however, can do so already now:
Michelle`s travelling by passion, but foremost thanks to her occupation, brought her to some 80 countries around the world. Wherever manageable she tried to experience local folklore and, naturally, taste as wide variety of local food as possible. Having collected tremendous memories and won wonderful friendships from diverse backgrounds, cultures and religions. According to her she is „a proud Slovak with big international spirit“.
Sofia with her friendly and sociable nature is a great example of a Bratislava girl – she is absolutely loving and living the city! She keeps saying she wouldn`t want to live anywhere else. Still in the middle of her political and European studies, but don`t worry, during our tours – no politics!
So, our dear friends, see you soon in Bratislava!

Slovak Food Taste Test - Eating in a Cave Restaurant in Bratislava, Slovakia
Come join us for a Slovak Food taste test as we visit a cave restaurant (Modrá Hviezda) in Bratislava Slovakia for lunch. We ended up ordering 5 different items from the menu including two drinks (wine and beer), two mains (both meat dishes) and a dessert to share. It ended up being a fantastic meal as the Slovak main dishes were hearty, rich and flavorful. We left feeling full and satisfied. The cave atmosphere was also very cool and cozy and we'd highly recommend this place. Keep in mind it is not a budget meal and ordering a couple of meat dishes, drinks and dessert will cost you over 40 Euros most likely.
1) Frankovka modrá red wine (dark skinned late ripening grapes rich in tannin with a spicy character)
2) Zlatý Bažant 'Golden Pheasant' Slovak Beer (12° svetlé pivo light coloured beer 4.7% ABV)
3) Pork chop in walnut crust with honey mustard sauce and roasted potatoes (bravčová kotleta)
4) Rabbit leg with forest mushrooms in a red wine sauce with herb potato herb dumplings (Králik na Šampiňónoch)
5) Homemade Slovak poppy seed dumplings (šúľance s makom)

Slovak Food Taste Test - Eating in a Cave Restaurant in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Food Video Transcript:
We are in between castle visits. We just finished visiting Devin Castle. Yeah. Next up is Bratislava Castle but first we need lunch. What is the plan? Well, we've worked up a ridiculous appetite doing all of that walking so we are just going to try to find somewhere to eat nearby this new castle so we're just wandering around and we're going to hopefully find a place really soon. More Slovak Food. Let's go.
Do you remember what kind of wine you got? It is the specialty. It started with Frankovka modrá.
But that was enough exploring for me I think I've earned a beer. Haha. So I'm trying over here Zlatý Bažant 12°. Hopefully I'm saying that right. Bazant.
I have this giant pork chop covered in like crushed walnuts and it comes with a honey mustard sauce (bravčová kotleta) and I also have roasted potatoes.
Pork and honey mustard. Haha. That is amazing. Is it good? This was listed under the traditional dishes section. Yep. So really happy to be trying this.
So my traditional like Slovak main over here is basically it is rabbit leg (Králik na Šampiňónoch). Yep. And then on this part this side I don't know if you can see we've got wild mushrooms. Yeah. In a wine sauce. And then we have dumplings.
Potato dumplings and these are thick and heavy. They look like little pancakes. Yeah, they do. I'm going to grab a bit of that. And Sam chose this just because he read red wine sauce and was like yeah. Yeah. Give me the wine sauce.
Dessert has arrived and once again it looks completely different from what I was expecting. We ordered poppy seed dumplings so I thought maybe with pierogi filled with poppy seed but the dumplings it is like this wormy shape. I would say. And then you have poppy seed powder on top.
Time for price point. So time to wrap that up. That was not a cheap meal. It was 42 Euros but oh it was good. It was just like gourmet food and the most expensive thing we ordered was 14 which was one of the meat dishes.

BRATISLAVA Free Walking Tour | Things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia
Today, I did a Bratislava free walking tour, lost my group, found them again, and had a great time. The Free Walking Tour Bratislava is highly recommended, especially if you are looking for things to do in Bratislava, Slovakia (for cheap).
We saw Bratislava castle, the famous UFO Bridge, and I had a really nice lunch and beer in a place called Urban House - which I recommend for the good food and super friendly staff. The waiter brought me a delicious hot sauce - just because he thought I looked like someone who would appreciate a good hot sauce! :-)

And if you want to stay at the place I used here in Bratislava, it's worth it! A large private room, shared bath and kitchen, and the owner often leaves tomatoes and fresh cherries from her own plants in the kitchen + free coffee and tea.
And they have chickens, too! Barbora was super responsive and very friendly! Plus, it's in a great location, just a ten minute walk from the castle!

Come join us for breakfast in Bratislava, Slovakia as we visit cafe Mondieu to sample a range of different breakfast food items for our late morning brunch. A typical Slovak breakfast, upon research, is typically meat heavy but after having some really heavy dinners of late we decided to order a lighter menu with some fancy drinks.
This restaurant in Bratislava served up delicious breakfast and high quality drinks. As a bonus this is probably one of the last meals we've had outside for the year. We'd highly recommend checking it out.
We ordered the following food items for breakfast in Bratislava, Slovakia:
1) 2 x caffè latte macchiato
2) 1 x spinach and parmesan omelette
3) 1 x brown toast with beetroot and pomegranate hummus and regular hummus

Breakfast in Bratislava, Slovakia Travel Food Video Transcript:
Good morning guys. Breakfast time in Bratislava. And it has been a little difficult finding a place this morning. Yeah, yeah. It is just we went to one place and we thought oh this would be a great place to film. We went inside and it was just way too loud. So yeah the music in these cafes is like boom boom boom. One thing we don't always show you guys is that like there are times that a restaurant or a cafe or a bar might be a really good place to have food or a drink but not necessarily a good place to film either because it is too loud, the lighting is awful or just like we're seated too close to other people so we like feel uncomfortable. Haha. So those are the awkward. Those are the kind of three conditions that cause us to kibosh a video. So alright but we found a place. We did find a place. We're at Mondieu. Yeah, apparently this is one of the best places to have breakfast here in Bratislava. And cakes. And cakes as well. Yeah, they have a great looking cake display. Um, yeah they basically have a very I would say very diverse menu. Pancakes, French Toast, Omelets. So you were actually looking up what a traditional Slovak breakfast is. What was that basically?
So it involves sausage. Yeah, it involves sausage. And we haven't seen a whole lot of sausage on this menu. Well, there is one option. One option. But to be honest I've been eating like way more meat than normal and I just like don't feel I can stomach it this morning. So we've gone for something a little bit lighter. Um, yeah, we've placed our orders and the food should be arriving soon.
The drinks are here and we both got the cafe latte macchiato with chocolate. Look at this thing of beauty. Look at those layers in there.
Alright breakfast is here and it looks amazing. I ordered the scrambled eggs with parmesan and baby spinach. And it is one of those meals that I'm just going to have to eat super quickly before it gets cold because it is actually quite quite chilly outside.
I'm basically getting two pieces of toast. Yep. One of them has like I guess it would be an original hummus. Yeah. And this over here is uh beetroot hummus with pomegranate sprinkled on top. So this is definitely not your average Slovak breakfast at all.
And since this place specializes in chocolates, cakes and baked goods Sam could not resist getting a slice of cheesecake. The fruit cheesecake just looked too good.
Alright price point time. So it came to 18 Euros total. And I thought that was a really good deal because we ended up basically getting three food items, two breakfast mains plus cheesecake and we got like the two most premium types of coffees on the menu. See you guys next time.

TOURISTS EAT SLOVAKIAN FOOD IN BRATISLAVA - Halušky
This was our first time in Slovakia and what better way to integrate ourselves into a new country than eating slovak food. We found a lovely restaurant just on the outskirts of Bratislava's old town, which served THE BEST Halušky, aswell as other Slovakian food favourites like borscht and potato pancakes.
