Day trip to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and a Epic Fail in the Mountains
I go on a day trip to explore Santa Fe, New Mexico by foot. We visit the historic plaza, the Loretto Chapel and it's miraculous staircase, the St. Francis Cathedral, Artsy Canyon Road, and the oldest house in the United States. Then I get lost in the mountains looking for the Tent Rocks, and the road was closed.

SANTA FE, USA - travel shorts
Welcome to 'the city different,' a place that makes its own rules without ever forgetting its long and storied past. Walking through its historic neighborhoods, or around the busy Plaza that remains its core, there's no denying that Santa Fe has a timeless, earthy soul. Founded around 1610, Santa Fe is the second-oldest city and the oldest state capital in the US, and is all but unique in having not only preserved many of its seductive original adobe buildings, but also insisted that all new downtown structures follow the same architectural style. And yet, despite being home to the country’s oldest public building and throwing its oldest annual party, Fiesta, Santa Fe is also synonymous with contemporary chic, thanks to its thriving art market, gourmet restaurants, great museums, upscale spas and world-class opera.
At over 7000ft above sea level, Santa Fe is also the nation’s highest state capital. Sitting at the foot of the glowing Sangre de Cristo range, it makes a fantastic base for hiking, mountain biking, backpacking and skiing. When you come off the trails, you can indulge in chile-smothered local cuisine, buy turquoise and silver directly from Native American jewelers in the Plaza, visit remarkable churches, or simply wander along centuries-old, cottonwood-shaded lanes and daydream about some day moving here.
Santa Fe’s mind-boggling assortment of characters include traditional and avant-garde artists, New Age hippy transplants, Spanish families that have called the city home for centuries, Mexican immigrants, retirees from both coasts, and more than a few Hollywood producers and movie stars. Most are drawn above all by the relaxed attitude, the sense of space, the unbeatable climate and that certain something that gives Santa Fe a singularly alluring essence.

SANTA FE SUPER CHIEF 1950s RAILROAD PROMOTIONAL FILM 86574 MD
This 1950’s travelogue profiles the Santa Fe Super Chief, the most luxurious way to travel across the country. The film begins by showing how train’s now offer all of the comforts of home. (00:00:20:00) Then, the new flagship of Santa Fe’s fleet is introduced, the Super Chief. (00:00:40:00). Our narrator then cuts to a beautiful actress, who is planning a train trip to Southern California. (00:01:10:00) The narrator convinces her to try the new Super Chief for her trip. The narrator then goes on to cover different features of the train, such as the observation lounge (00:01:50:00), and 100% private rooms such as a roomette for one (00:02:10:00), the new type bedroom (00:02:52:00), and the new Super Chief compartment (00:03:05:00). Drawing rooms are also offered (00:03:27:00). Beautiful footage of buttes is seen at (00:03:21:00), (00:03:38:00) and (00:06:53:00). Next, the Super Chief’s kitchen (00:04:35:00) and dining car (00:05:00:00) are shown. We are then introduced to the main lounge (00:05:32:00) of the pleasure dome car. Here, one can play cards (00:05:38:00), use a writing desk (00:05:47:00), or even go to the barber for a haircut (00:05:58:00). Next, the lower lounge (00:06:07:00) is shown where you can have a cocktail. This is followed by the turquoise room (00:07:06:00), the first and only private dining room on rails! The train then stops at Albuquerque (00:08:10:00) on its way to Los Angeles. Finally, we arrive in California, the Golden State! (00:09:20:00) A vintage shot of the LA train station can be seen at (00:09:42:00). At the conclusion of her trip, the beautiful actress from the beginning of the film tells us she is convinced the Super Chief is not just another train. (00:10:10:00) Then, an animated map of the train’s route from Chicago to Los Angeles is shown. (00:10:35:00)
Various vintage shots of the Super Chief traveling are shown at (00:01:42:00), (00:05:16:00), (00:06:59:00), (00:08:00:00), (00:09:00:00), (00:09:33:00), (00:09:52:00) and (00:11:05:00). A wonderful shot of the train traveling at night is shown as well. (00:04:22:00)
The Super Chief was one of the named passenger trains and the flagship of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. It claimed to be The Train of the Stars because of the celebrities it carried between Chicago, Illinois, and Los Angeles, California.
The Super Chief (Nos. 17 and 18) was the first Diesel-powered, all-Pullman sleeping car train in America, and it eclipsed the Chief as Santa Fe's standard bearer. The extra-fare ($10) Super Chief left Dearborn Station in Chicago for its first trip on May 12, 1936. Before starting scheduled service in May 1937, the lightweight version of the Super Chief ran 2,227 miles (3,584 km) from Los Angeles over recently upgraded tracks in 36 hours and 49 minutes, averaging 60 mph (97 km/h) overall and reaching 100 mph (160 km/h).
With one set of equipment, the train initially operated once a week from both Chicago and Los Angeles. After more cars had been delivered the Super Chief ran twice weekly beginning in 1938 and daily after 1948. Adding to the train's mystique were its gourmet meals and Hollywood clientele.
Competitors to the Super Chief were the City of Los Angeles on the Chicago and North Western Railway and the Union Pacific Railroad, and (to a lesser extent) the Golden State on the Rock Island and Southern Pacific. The Santa Fe Super Chief was one of the last passenger trains in the United States to carry an all-Pullman consist; only the Pennsylvania Railroad's Broadway Limited and the Illinois Central's Panama Limited survived longer. The train maintained its high level of service until the end of Santa Fe passenger operations on May 1, 1971.

Twenty-six miles North of Santa Fe in the town of Espanola, one can take the River Road which is sixty miles to Taos and return to Espanola on the High Road which is only fifty-two miles. The Enchanted Circle byway is an eighty-four-mile circle which starts in Taos and takes one North, then East across the Sangre De Cristo Mountains and back down to Taos.
The Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument is a remarkable outdoor laboratory, offering an opportunity to observe the geological processes that shape natural landscapes. The cone tent shaped rocks were formed millions of years ago due to volcanic eruptions from the Jemez volcanic field. As a result of uniform layering of volcanic material bands of gray with beige and pink colored rock formed along the cliff face. Over time, rain and wind cut into the deposits creating canyons. The tent formations found throughout the canyon vary in height from a few feet to as high as ninety feet. The monument covers 5,610 acres of public land with an elevation of 5,570 feet to a height of 6,760 feet.
Canyon road, just a few blocks from historic Santa Fe is a place where one can find most any type of art the heart desires. The road is a half mile walk one way, and here one will find 100 galleries and restaurants.

Route 66 Part 8 - We Reach SANTA FE, New Mexico
In part 8 we take Route 66 from Tucumcari to Santa Fe, New Mexico.
This is the Santa Fe loop which was the original alignment of Route 66 between 1926 and 1937.
Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico and looks very different to many of the other towns and cities on Route 66. It has a very distinctive architectural style all its own. Low rise, adobe brick buildings, which consist of a mixture of sun-dried earth and straw. Many of these are over 400 years old.
Santa Fe is also home to many artists with galleries concentrated along Canyon Road.
We stayed in Santa Fe for two nights so got a full day to explore. As well as the historic buildings in the centre of town we did get chance to visit the Santa Fe Farmers Market at the Railyard which is open Saturday and Tuesday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.
We didn’t take the camera to any restaurants but the standard of food in Santa Fe is excellent.
So make sure you take the Santa Fe Loop when driving Route 66.
Next time, we drive Route 66 to Winslow, Arizona.
When planning the trip we have found the following Route 66 books and maps very useful:

Santa Fe is rich with Spanish and Native American culture. You may do a tour of the Loretto Chapel and round out your trip with some authentic Mexican cuisine and some wine from the many local wineries.
