It was founded in 1848 to provide a magnificent park-like setting to bury and remember family and friends. Set among the important jewels of Greater Boston's Emerald Necklace—the linked collection of parks and green spaces (the jewels) that ring the city—Forest Hills Cemetery is a treasure trove of natural splendor and man-made beauty. In recognition of its unique qualities, Forest Hills Cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.
More than 275 rolling acres is the setting for art, sculpture, memorials and architecture that are admired around the world. And throughout the landscape, carefully cultivated bushes, trees and plantings contribute to an atmosphere that is both restful and arresting... an enchanting combination that celebrates the living, while commemorating the deceased. It is no wonder Forest Hills Cemetery was named one of the 1000 Greatest Places in Massachusetts.

Confederate monument at Forest Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri. The 2nd photo of the General Joseph O. Shelby statue was taken in Waverly, Missouri.
The sign at the beginning reads:
Shelby’s Last Stand
“On Oct. 23. 1864 Confederate Gen. Shelby being forced back from Westport by Gen. Curtis and flanked on the east by Gen. Pleasanton formed a defensive line here behind stone fences running east and west to the state line. Jackman’s Brigade of Shelby’s Division arrived after 1 PM to defend the Confederate right flank. Shelby’s “Iron Brigade” under Gen. Thompson was farther west. Generals Curtis and Pleasanton finally drove the Confederates south.
Go S.E. to the Confederate monument. Shelby and many of his men are buried here. Turn lt. on Troost to Gregory and rt. to 78th and Holmes.”

Copp's Hill Cemetery Boston Puritan graves Cotton Mather
This short film shows Copp's Hill Burial Ground (or Burying Ground),which was founded in 1659 in Boston, Massachusetts. The video also depicts Old North Church where Paul Revere was notified by lantern that the British were coming. In the distance is the Charles River, Boston Harbor and the Zakim Bridge. Also seen in the Puritan Cemetery are the graves and tombs of Cotton Mather, Increase Mather, 17th Puritan Christian ministers and Prince Hall, founder of the African American Masons, named after him.

There are many who rest or did rest in this church yard. It was an area that flooded a lot and many caskets were soaked. Also the grave of John Hancock may not be there at all anymore. Walk with me as I look about and talk about some of the stories and mysteries of this famous place.

a long video of the phipps st burying ground in charston boston massachusetts. my 2nd visit and better then the first visit. it is so historic the most early 17th centrey graves i have ever seen. most are slate with their original burials oldest slate burial 1659, and some black charcoal stone, red stone with 1652 there, alot of history. a must for any history or cemetery lover..est 1630..oldest official grave and burial possibly in the country john harvord..near the monument a table tomb 1634..

and updated video log of the amazing first settlers burying ground of newbury. many of the first settlers are here and this cemetery had alot of surprises. most of the stones are memoriel stones but some actual graves are still present as well as the buriels. the rocks or tall skinny rocks are in fact official graves and buriels because look closely one can see initials chizzled into them with a very hard to see possible date... aka do it yourself graves. as what was done often back in the 17th to the early 19th centry.

GUMES, William Dart Bill April 8th, 1929 - January 27th, 2011 Resident of Boston. He was born and raised in Boston Massachusetts and attended Boston Trade School. He was enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Korean War where he was stationed in Japan. He was employed as an Electronic Technician with Lincoln Laboratory of M.I.T in Lexington, MA. Bill was one of four children born to the late William A. Gumes and Helen I. Hyatt. Brother to the late Carl Buzz Gumes. Bill will forever be remembered by his former wife and Mother of his children Merrill Helena Gumes. Children who loved him dearly Lauren Janine Oselette and Peter Alexander Gumes. Sisters Barbara Babe Gumes and Helen Cecil Young. Treasured grandchild Nicholas Oselette. Many caring cousins, nieces and nephews and countless other friends and family whom were so fortunate to have him in their lives. Bill loved people and never met a stranger. He was witty, sharp and found humor in life's darkest corners. He loved the game of Football and was a huge New England Patriots fan win or lose. Bill enjoyed playing cards, swimming, passing time on Cape Cod and was an avid reader. He was a 50 year member of both Lincoln Lab and Electrons bowling league with 9 of those years in perfect attendance. He was also a member of the Prince Hall Masons. He loved to gamble with everything and always said The bigger the risk the bigger the reward. Bill touched the lives of everyone he met and always made a impression. He was exceptionally charming and remained so until the very end. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial service on Monday, January 31st 2011 at 10 a.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery, Forsyth Chapel 95 Forest Hills Avenue, Boston, MA 02130
