Places to see in ( Buffalo - USA )
Places to see in ( Buffalo - USA )
Buffalo is a city on the shores of Lake Erie in upstate New York. Its fine neoclassical, beaux arts and art deco architecture speaks to its history as an industrial capital in the early 20th century. Its landmarks include the 398-ft art deco City Hall, the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Darwin D. Martin House and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, a Greek Revival museum with works by Picasso and Warhol.
The second-largest city in New York State, Buffalo is full of surprises. The city is undergoing a dramatic transformation as its proud history and incredible architectural legacy weave their way into every aspect of a renewed civic life. Surmounting the effects of deindustrialization, Buffalo is building a new identity as a city of great nightlife, cultural attractions and indigenous cuisine, as well as tight-knit neighborhoods with community spirit and a real sense of place. A palpable enthusiasm winds its way through the city's streets and neighborhoods, as locals who have summoned the collective will to revitalize their city are finally seeing their efforts pay off after decades of work.
More and more, Buffalo's exquisite and well-preserved architecture has grabbed the attention of locals and tourists alike. Most recently, Buffalo's architecture took center stage when the 2011 National Preservation Conference was held in the city to unanimous acclaim. Buildings from almost every decade of Buffalo's existence are still preserved, with more being restored each year. As of December 2011, there are seven historic neighborhoods in Buffalo listed on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as six additional ones that have been granted landmark status by the Buffalo Preservation Board. Of those historic districts, there are three main ones of interest to architecture buffs:
The Allentown Historic District was the first Buffalo neighborhood to be listed on the National Register. Located north of downtown, Allentown was settled in the middle and late 19th century and is characterized by small but lovely red brick houses in styles that were popular at that time, such as the Italianate and French Second Empire. Among Allentown's most architecturally exquisite buildings are the Allendale Theatre and the seven houses that make up the Tiffts Row, both of which are located on Allen Street; the William Dorsheimer House on Delaware Avenue, and the former Buffalo Catholic Institute building on Main and Virginia Streets that is now home to the Church of Scientology.
The Delaware Avenue Historic District consists of the stretch of Delaware Avenue called Millionaire's Row. The National Register of Historic Places defines the Delaware Avenue Historic District as being located between North and Bryant Streets. Parkside is the neighborhood that consists of the streets in North Buffalo immediately north and east of Delaware Park.

Scajaquada Expressway - Buffalo, N.Y.
New York State Route 198 (NY 198) is a state highway located entirely within the city of Buffalo, New York, in the United States. It is named the Scajaquada Expressway for Scajaquada Creek, which it parallels as it heads across northern Buffalo. NY 198 connects the Niagara Thruway (Interstate 190 or I-190) in the Black Rock neighborhood to the Kensington Expressway (NY 33) on Buffalo's east side. On average, the highway carries up to 70,000 cars per day per the New York State Department of Transportation informational meeting of September 2015.
NY 198 begins at exit 11, a semi-directional T-interchange, of I-190 in the Black Rock section in the city of Buffalo, alongside the Niagara River. NY 198 proceeds northeastward as the Scajaquada Expressway, a four-lane expressway through Buffalo. Just after the interchange, the route crosses over NY 266 (Niagara Street) and westbound serves an interchange with NY 266 and NY 265. NY 198 winds northeast into the West Side of Buffalo, approaching the campus of Buffalo State College as it enters an interchange with Grant Street, accessible from both directions. At this interchange, NY 198 bends eastward along the northern edge of campus, passing the football field, Moore Dining Hall, and several residence halls as it bends southeast alongside the campus.
Now in the Elmwood Village section of Buffalo, NY 198 bends eastward once again and provides a four-way interchange with access to Elmwood Avenue and the nearby Albright-Knox Art Gallery and Buffalo History Museum. After the interchange, NY 198 enters Delaware Park, passes Hoyt Lake, then encounters a four-way interchange with NY 384 (Delaware Avenue). After NY 384, NY 198 bends southeast, passing north of Forest Lawn Cemetery and south of Delaware Park Golf Course and the Buffalo Zoo. After entering an at-grade intersection with Parkside Avenue, NY 198 leaves Delaware Park and returns to a four-lane divided highway.
After the conversion, NY 198 interchanges with NY 5 (Main Street) just north of the Humboldt-Hospital station of Buffalo's Metro Rail. The expressway crosses under Kensington Avenue and continues southeast, entering the Masten section of Buffalo. There, NY 198 enters an interchange, merging, in both directions, with NY 33 (the Kensington Expressway). This merge marks the eastern terminus of the NY 198 designation.
Red Jacket: Sculpture Conservation Treatment in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Francis Miller
Red Jacket: Sculpture Conservation Treatment in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Francis Miller
Forest Lawn Cemetery, founded in 1850, is a 269 acre “Rural Cemetery” listed on the National Register of Historic Places The grounds contain a spectacular array of sculptures and monuments memorializing notable industrialists, merchants, financiers, politicians and members of society. Beyond the Delaware Avenue gates, lies a unique plot that contains a simple row of grave markers commemorating eight Seneca Native Americans. Behind the row of markers, is a granite monument with a crowning, 11’ 6’’ bronze sculpture of the Native American, Red Jacket.
Red Jacket (c.1750-1830), was a prominent and influential Native American Seneca chief that lead his Nation through a tremulous period in history. Known as Otetiani in his youth, he was later called Sagoyewatha, “ he who keeps them awake”, for his skillful orations. He also took the name Red Jacket for the ornately embroidered coat given to him by the British for his aid in the Revolutionary War. After British defeat, the Seneca chief led delegations to the United States capitol in Philadelphia on behalf of the Seneca and Six Nations of the Iroquois League, where he gained admiration from the president, George Washington. Washington later commissioned and gifted a large silver medal in honor of their meeting.
The heroic scale likeness of Red Jacket, sculpted by James G. C. Hamilton, was cast by Bureau Brothers Foundry of Philadelphia in 1891. Wearing ethnic clothing and Washington’s silver, the bronze figure endured nearly 120 years of harsh environmental exposure with little, to no preservation efforts. The bronze surfaces had lost all signs of original patina and were visually disfigured by contrasting corrosion compounds. Years of industrial pollution exposed the copper alloy to acidic deposition that caused significant surface loss and deep pitting. Failed foundry fills at cast joints allowed excessive water entry into the hollow interior. Additionally, the entire sculpture had drifted precariously to the back, proper left, likely due to prevailing Lake Erie winds, and was resting 3/16” over the 15’ high, Westerly, Rhode Island granite base.
ConservArt LLC conserved the sculpture in 2010. The bronze surfaces were cleaned and loose corrosion compounds removed by medium pressure water. The failed fills were removed mechanically and new fills of lead and bronze rich epoxy inserted and tooled to conform the bronze sculpture contours and textures. The green appearance was preserved and the disfiguring appearance reduced by the application of thin Cupric Nitrate patinas. The final surfaces were treated with a acrylic based, clear, protective coating.
Borescopic examination revealed no anchor system and that the sculpture had been free standing since it’s original instillation in 1891. In collaboration with the Forest Lawn Group President, Joseph P. Dispenza, and the fabricators and engineers of International Chimney Corporation, an unique 316 grade, stainless steel, anchor system was designed that distributed the load of the bronze away from the outer edges of the granite base and prevented shifting in any direction. The sculpture was lowered to the ground by crane, the anchor system installed to fit the exact contours of the bronze, and Red Jacket safely returned and secured for continued viewing.
It was an honor to treat this historic monument, the first and last to be treated without a site visit, and an honor to be present during the rededication ceremony lead by New York State Assemblymember Sam Hoyt, who secured a grant for the conservation efforts. It was also a great privilege to be present during the blessing of the site by Al Parker, a member of the Tonawanda Band of Seneca and relative of Red Jacket and Ely Parker. Our fortunate timing literally saved this remarkable sculpture from the edge of catastrophe.

A trip around the Pan-American Exposition, part 1
SUMMARY
The entire film was photographed from an excursion vessel traveling through all of the waterways surrounding the Exposition. The major exhibit buildings and amusement attractions of the fair can be seen as the boat makes its way through the area, going through tunnels and under bridges.
From a contemporary Edison film company catalog: A TRIP AROUND THE PAN-AMERICAN EXPOSITION. Ungeprueft [code for telegraphic orders]. The Pan-American Exposition is encircled by an especially constructed canal, which was put in for the purpose of allowing the tourist to view the exterior of the buildings of the Pan-American Exposition with as little fatigue as possible. It is called the Grand Canal, is over a mile in length and extends around the central group of large buildings. Winding lagoons connecting with the canal branch off in all directions. The Mirror Lakes in the Southern portion of the canal form a picturesque feature and add ten fold interest to this picture. The electric launches which make the trip around the exposition, and which are controlled by the Venice in America Co., represent the climax of comfort and elegance. The ride is a refreshing one with charming views at every turn. Romantic bridges span the waterway at convenient points, statuary placed everywhere contribute to the picturesque effect. The above named picture was secured by special permission of Mr. Burgee, of the Venice in America Co., and our picture was made from the bow of an especially chartered electric launch which made the trip for us at a high rate of speed. We give below as near as possible a detailed description of the different points of interest as they are recorded by the camera, and just as they are viewed by the visitor himself in making the trip in one of these exquisite launches. The launch in which our camera was placed started from the landing place in the Streets of Venice, which is situated on the west side of the Exposition grounds facing the Midway. The canal makes a quarter circle eastward, and our boat passes under the west Mall bridge, making an abrupt turn northward and continuing on its course past the Bazaar Building and to the African Village, when it swings suddenly to the eastward and makes a complete circle of the Electric Tower, turning its many corners and passing under a number of beautifully constructed bridges, over which multitudes of people are seen wending their way.

Mushrooms in the Forests of New York State
A compilation of short fungi videos from a hike through one of the vast forests of New York State. Mushrooms are actually the reproductive structures of vast underground mycelial networks that constitute the bulk of the fungal organisms we consider to be mushrooms. Mycelium is the vegetative part of a mushroom species that consists of dense, vast, branching networks of hyphae, which are essentially roots in the soil with the thickness of single cells, attached to each other end-on-end. Hyphae secrete enzymes to digest the nutrients in the environment around them for absorption. Mycelial mats can cover vast volumes of soil and land, making some mushrooms the heaviest and largest organisms by mass and volume ever known. Mycelia can kill off entire forests, but also help decompose organic matter and create richer soil environments for even larger forests to grow on later. Mycelia also serve as a food source for many soil invertebrates, and also help purify the soil of man-made pollutants by breaking down chemicals. Mushrooms, the fruiting structures of mycelia, form when two compatible homokaryotic mycelia meet and form a dikaryotic mycelia that is capable of reproduction. The wood fungi shown in this video operate on the same principles.
The stream I walked by in this video created an extremely humid habitat in the areas around it. Due to the rushed nature of this hike, the need to get low and squat at awkward angles, and memory leaks, the footage presented herein is not ideal at all parts, but I found all of this content to be worth presenting for the sake of fungal species diversity. Who knows when I will get a chance like this again, or see these species?
