Japan's Catholics delighted at visit of Pope
(23 Nov 2019) Despite wet and windy weather, a small group of Catholics came out to greet Pope Francis as he was due to arrive at the Vatican Embassy on Saturday at the start of a three-day visit to Japan.
Some of them had been invited to meet Francis at an embassy event later during the day, and were expressing enthusiasm over the opportunity to meet the Pope.
I am so looking forward to seeing him and I cannot wait said Michiko Haramoto, a devoted Catholic and resident of Fukuoka - in the country's southwest - who had traveled to Tokyo to join the event.
I don't know if it will be possible but if I get to speak to him directly, it will be so wonderful and I will certainly tell him how grateful we all are to receive him, Haramoto said.
Many of Francis' followers are looking forward to Sunday's papal visit to the historic cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, where he is expected to deliver a strong anti-nuclear peace message at Hypocenter Park, which was built exactly where an atomic bomb exploded in 1945.
I hope he will deliver the message of true peace to Japan and to the world, Ryohei Skamoto said.
He added: And I hope the world will listen to him and his message. That's what I wish he could do on this visit.

Hidden Christian of Japan today they still maintain their cryptic way of practice
[narration]Tycoon Toyotomi Hideyoshi outlawed
and deported Christians.
He said;Japan is a gods land, and Chiristianism is the evil one.
Actually he recognized Spanish and Portuguese military power as a threat for his country.
[Bishop Mizobe Yuh is saying]Well, certainly missionaries were doing there mission
for their own countrys behoof.
There is no denying that missionaries behaviors caused the anxiety
about possible military invasion after their plain mission.
[narration] In those days 90 percent of populations of Nagasakiregion are the Christians
and there were aggressive activities.
Here is a letter to the missionaries in japan.
It ordered providing Portuguese ships visiting Nagasaki with bullets, guns, and another military equipments.
and it also said ; Make the whole land of Nagasaki region military base.
Then tragic events occured
26 Christians were martyred by Toyotomis order.
It is beginnings of long and harsh period of the supression.
In 1614, Petro Kibe are deported like all of other missionaries.
he was 27 years old at that time.
Over 40 thousands of Christians in Japan were forced to abandon their faith by Toyotomi and Tokugawas policy.
And there were a few people continuing to practice secretly.
[voices of chanting and narration] They are the kakure- kirishitan as Hidden Christian.
They disguised themselves as a Buddhists,
and all of them must prove themselves as being not a christian by Fumie.
(Fumie is a some kind of performance dishonoring Christs statue
by putting their feet on it in front of the lords subordinates eyes)
While doing such a duty, they were praying in front of Christs and Marias statue
in their closet room of their own houses.
here is the portrait of infant Christ and Mother (Virgin)Mary.
Buddhism painting like appearance is disguise for their true worship.
In this ikitsuki island ,Hidden Christians tradition still exists in ordinary lives of residences.
He is Funabara Hiroshi, and his son Masashi, loco farmers.
They are praying in front of their private Buddhism sacristy in every morning.
And after doing that they are praying in front of another god(God).
This is NANDO-GAMI(god in closet room).
[Masashi is saying]Here is a Mother Mary and Christ and underneath of them, two missionaries.
I have benn taught one of them is Francisco de Xavier, yes.
[Masashi is praying and narration]
40 minutes praying in every morning.
This is ORASYO(chanting or oratorio).
Only sounds of Latin or Portuguese
is putted directly(without considering meanings)to katakana(our alphabet).
Important part of these(I think it is CREDO with eagerly expectation for Marys intermission)
were translated into Japanese.
Their offsprings inherited and have protected these ones.
At the hill of this island, there is a tomb and statue of Christian communities leader in those days.
His name is Gaspar Nishi Genka.
He never gave up his faith under suppression and become the first martyr of this island.
[ costume playing childrens choir and narration]
He was a lords officer(landlords, maybe I have to explain about this, not all of the lords of our country had a power holding their court,or giving the judicial sentence to their people on daily conflicts, some of them only had the right collecting taxes on rice harvest from their property) and ministered the sacrament as an acting padre(I dont understand how can it be possible such a thing).
This island had no padre at that time.
After the outlawying Christianity,he gave up his title and a position of lords officer
and served this Christian community.
For him, Funabara Hiroshi, this is a very important place.
People in this island have retained the faith, by becoming a Hidden Christian,
the faith that Gaspar Nishi retained by becoming a martyr.
[ Funabara is saying] Of course Maria and Christ are important, and martyrs
and ansectors are also important as the closer figures for us , yes.
[narration]In Ikitsuki island, many people have retained their faith as Hidden Christians
even after legalization of Christianity.
This is an UTA-ORASYO, lyrical one.
[We shall go to the temple in the Paradise.
For now it exists beyond tears.
Later there must be salvation.]

Life Story of San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila
Chinese father, Filipino mother, both Christians. He learned Chinese and Tagalog from them, Spanish from the Dominicans whom he served as altar boy and sacristan. Professional calligrapher and documents transcriptionist. Member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary. Married layman, and the father of two sons and a daughter.
For unknown reasons, Lorenzo was accused of murder. He sought asylum on board ship with three Dominican priests, Saint Antonio Gonzalez, Saint Guillermo Courtet, and Saint Miguel de Aozaraza, a Japanese priest, Saint Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Saint Lazaro of Kyoto, a leper. Only when they were at sea did he learn that they were going to Japan during a time of intense Christian persecution.
Lorenzo could have gone to Formosa (modern Taiwan), but feared the Spaniards there would hang him, and so stayed with the missionaries as they landed at Okinawa. The group was soon exposed as Christian, arrested, and taken to Nagasaki. They were tortured in several ways for days. Lawrence and the Japanese priest broke at one point, and were ready to renounce their faith in exchange for release, but after their moment of crisis, they reclaimed their faith and defied their tormentors. First canonized Filipino martyr.
Born
c.1600 at Binondo, Manila, Philippines
Died
29-30 September 1637 at Nagasaki, Japan by being crushed over a period of three days while hanging upside down
body burned, ashes thrown into the Pacific Ocean
Beatified
18 February 1981 by Pope John Paul II
Canonized
18 October 1987 by Pope John Paul II
When Pope John Paul II came to Manila in February 1981 to proclaim the beatification of Lorenzo Ruiz, he also included in the lists of martyr beatified those who underwent martyrdom in 1633, 1634 and 1637 - for the same motive . . . for proclaiming their Christian faith.
Here are the names:
▪ Domingo Ibanez de Erquicia - Spanish Dominican priest
▪ Francisco Shoyemon - Japanese Dominican brother
▪ Jacobo Kyoshei de Sta. Maria - Japanese Dominican priest
▪ Miguel Kurobioye - Japanese lay catechist
▪ Lucas de Espiritu Santo - Spanish Dominican priest
▪ Domingo Kakusuke - Japanese lay catechist
▪ Mateo Kohioye del Rosario - Spanish Dominican brother
▪ Sister Magdalena - Japanese Dominican nun from Omura
▪ Sister Marina - Japanese Dominican nun from Omura
▪ Jordan de San Esteban - Italian Dominican priest
▪ Thomas Hioji de San Jacinto - Japanese Dominican priest
▪ Antonio Gonzales - Spanish Dominican priest
▪ Guillermo Courtet - French Dominican priest
▪ Vicente Shiwozuka dela Cruz - Japanese Dominican priest
▪ Lorenzo Ruiz - Filipino lay person
Therefore, of those beatified, 8 were Japanese, 4 Spaniards, 1 Italian, 1 Frenchman and 1 Filipino. 8 were Dominican Priests, 2 Dominican brothers, 2 Dominican Nuns, and 3 lay persons. Only Lorenzo Ruiz was married and head of a family.

Nagasaki - Sofukuji Temple, 26 Martyrs of Japan statues and Meganebashi
Day 15 - Sofukuji Temple, and Meganebashi
After the Peace Park, we decided to visit some of the temples which Nagasaki is famous for. Unfortunately we were running behind time, so Sofukuji Temple was the only one we managed to see before closing time. The temple itself had a strong chinese influence, as with many others in Nagasaki. The graves at the back however was the most memorial part of Nagasaki. I was not sure if it was because of the gloomy weather, but there was a mysterious atmosphere when walking among the grave stones.
After visiting the temple, we wanted to go to the JR Nagasaki station to have dinner. While there, we decided to make a quick detour to the 26 Martyrs of Japan statue to have a look. The nearby church was the only church we visited in the whole trip to Japan.
When we returned to our accommodation, we did our laundry at a nearby store. We decided to kill some time by going to the nearby Meganebashi bridge (literally Spectacles Bridge). It is given that nickname as the reflection of the bridge in the water makes it look like Spectacles...I'll leave your imagine to run wild on this.
