Brazos Culture Heritage Festival 2017
The Fort Bend Museum presented the first ever Brazos Cultural Heritage Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Decker Park in Richmond on Saturday.
The festival is a new outreach event created to spotlight the many cultures that make up Fort Bend County — one of the most ethnically-diverse counties in the United States.
Families learned cultural dances, saw and participated in heritage crafts, learned about important figures in Fort Bend County history and enjoy traditional music.

National Park Service: Richmond Urban Archeology Corps 2016
Richmond, Virginia high school students share their experience participating with Urban Archeology Corps (UAC). UAC is a summer-long partnership between Groundwork RVA ( and Richmond National Battlefield Park (nps.gov/rich). This year, students working with trained archeologists excavated a portion of Chimborazo - a site in downtown Richmond that served as a Confederate hospital during the Civil War and a Freedmen's Camp during Reconstruction. Today the site is a unit of Richmond National Battlefield Park as well as a Richmond city park.
Recovering the Foundation of Texas History—The Preservation of San Felipe de Austin
-- San Felipe de Austin, a town founded by Stephen F. Austin in 1823, played a pivotal role in events leading up to the Texas Revolution, yet this story is not nearly as well known or understood as others in Texas history, including the Alamo and San Jacinto.
To increase public understanding of the town’s history and significance, the Texas Historical Commission is developing a new museum and visitor amenities at San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, including a welcome/orientation center, exhibits, map plaza, outdoor interpretation, and educational programs focused on the site’s history and archeology. HOUSTON, TX --A family received more than they bargained for when they requested the help of local police in dealing with a mentally ill family member. To defuse a situation involving a delusional man who had locked himself in a bathroom with a knife, police kicked in the door, screamed obscenities, tased him several times, and finally shot him to death. The horrifying scene was captured through a hidden camera set up by family members who were distrustful of police.
It began as Michael Blair, a 26-year-old paranoid schizophrenic, had an emotional episode in which he picked up a knife and claimed he wanted to hurt himself. Blair took the knife and locked himself in a bathroom. Not knowing what else to do, the Blair family called 9-1-1 for assistance.
Two Fort Bend County Sheriff's deputies soon arrived. They initiated contact in the most cordial way they knew how.
Hey man, we will kick in the door, and I don't wanna do it, one officer barked. You want to do this the easy way. Don't make us do it the hard way.

Talks begin over remains found in old Fort Bend County cemetery
Community leaders met with Fort Bend ISD leaders Monday to discuss the remains recently found in a cemetery. The remains are believed to be slaves and prisoners from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Jerome Ehrhardt :: Aboriginal Trails in West-Central Arizona
The study of aboriginal Indian pedestrian trails in the Verde Valley was initiated after many hours of archaeological surveys by the Verde Valley Chapter of the Arizona Archaeological Society in the Sycamore Canyon and Hackberry Basin area south and east of Camp Verde, Arizona. As we researched the mid-nineteenth century US military accounts and maps of expeditions into Indian strongholds in the Verde River area, a picture emerged of a large system of historic aboriginal trails. Earlier prehistoric pueblos and habitation sites are also found along these same historical aboriginal trails documented in the military records. The trails principally emanated out from the Hopi Mesas in a dendritic pattern to the San Francisco Peaks, the Verde Valley and the Tonto Basin. In the Verde Valley the major trails branched off to connect contemporaneous settlements to the west, north, and south.
On October 9, 2010 a symposium organized by David R. Wilcox (Museum of Northern Arizona) and Peter J. Pilles, Jr. (Coconino National Forest), was presented at the Museum of Northern Arizona on Contributions of Avocational Archaeology to Historic Preservation in Arizona. Introduced by Wilcox, eight papers were presented on the results of archaeological surveys conducted in the Middle Verde Valley and northern Arizona, a paper on rock art in the Middle Verde Valley, and one on Paleoindian and Archaic projectile point classification on the Coconino National Forest. John and Lisa Ward of Trailhead Video filmed the proceedings and later integrated the powerpoint presentations to produce the Youtube videos of this event.

Huge Thyssenkrupp Hydraulic Elevator With Submersible Motor @Fort Worth Museum Of Science & History
(filmed on Feb 8, 2018) I have been wanting to film this elevator for a long time, and I finally did. It runs very smoothly despite the noises from the guide rails. The only reason I didn’t get the view in the video is because it’s a courtyard and a wall of the building.

Back the Future - Fort Bend County courthouse restoration continues
Fort Bend County's 103 year old courthouse is undergoing construction to restore the historic structure to bring it back to its original glory, when it was first built. Some additions to the original structure will be removed as part of the restoration effort. Once completed in about a year, the majestic courthouse will look just like it did when it was new and it will be a functional county government office building, not a museum. The courthouse is being reconstructed as part of a public/private effort with the George Foundation providing $2 million of the $5 million total project cost. The courthouse was originally constructed for $75 in 1908.
Neon Dreams
We lit up Seattle last night. Did you see us?
THE TRADE:
Swap a sign for a server? Sure! :) SWAT Systems and Western Neon worked together to create the newest piece of neon art to enhance Seattle's skyline. A Seattle Art Museum quality sign in exchange for stellar Seattle IT services was a fair trade.
Local businesses working with local businesses was our emphasis.
THE PRODUCTION:
Western Neon produced SWAT's sign using one of the most talented glass benders in the United States, if not the world, Kelsey Fernkopf. Kelsey heated the glass tubes, formed them into letters, then bombarded them with argon and neon gasses. SWAT's sign was then aged to maximum brightness, assembled by Zach Velkoff, and installed by Hunter Davis and Gave Ochoa.
THE SHOW:
Someone got the crazy idea to tour the sign through Seattle... ILLUMINATED on the back of a truck.
The finished sign was tied to the back of Western Neon's Toyota Tacoma and driven from SODO to Ballard, passing many iconic landmarks such as: the Seattle Great Wheel, Pike Place Market, the Space Needle, Kerry Park, and then it finally crossed the Ballard Bridge, ending at SWAT Systems.
Western Neon used the boom truck to install the sign, lifting it high into the Ballard skyline.
THE MORALE OF THE STORY:
All businesses, especially small businesses, should advertise their name through neon art! ...fresh servers don't hurt either. ;)
